According to web analytics company StatCounter, January 2018 was the year of the OS world's "flippening" - where Windows 10 finally surpassed the old, trusty Windows 7 in users' systems. According to the firm, Windows 10 in January was present in 42.78% of the worldwide desktop market share, just a hair above Windows 7's 41.86%. Windows 8.1 stands as the ugly duckling, with only 8.72 percent of the market still holding on to that OS.

Now, granted, one analytics company does not a trend make; there are a myriad of factors that might explain discrepancies between different companies' estimates. however, the fact remains that this is the first time Windows 10 is reported to have surpassed Windows 7 in terms of pure number of live systems. Also to take into account is that even in analytics firms that don't display these results, Windows 10 is clearly gaining traction against Windows 7 - one needs only look at the trendlines for both OSes on NetMarketShare, for instance, to see that there's a clear, positive momentum for WIndows 10 when compared to Windows 7. It's only a matter of time until all firms report the same, really. Still, this news comes years later than what Microsoft had hoped for with Windows 10; adoption of the OS hasn't been quite as predicted by the company. Still, Microsoft's ongoing work on the software, clear roadmap and support efforts seem to be paying off.

I like windows 10 more than windows 7. I just install classic shell and it fixes 90% if the issues. Seriously though, they should have it automatically built in, it would help a lot.

Also being someone who has spent the last few weeks using a MacBook I can thoroughly say that windows 10 is 28448 Times better. The thing won't even allow for multiple windows being ran side by side at once, and people say it's"better" than windows :shadedshu:

I can see why DX12 gets no love.

You mean where M$ was pushing Win10 updates to people without their permission, rampantly, and using misleading and questionable practices to get it loaded on computers? Ah, ok :)

As for me, i hate how system settings organized in W10 (but on Lumia phone it's ok), why with every new version MS try make new route to the same configuration windows, sorry but most of time i dealing with every "new windows" as service engineer.

And same feelings for Mac OS Since W7, i have iMac from 2010 because i need to know how it works to help people and do my job. The only reason for Mac, it's own professional audio/video software works about 3-4x times faster than "industry standart" Adobe, maybe some optimization (cheating) with quality level.

Not only is it just Steam so it should be taken with a truckload of salt, but it's Steam as a result of the influx of Chinese players from PUBG.

This was Windows 10 on Steam several months ago: https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-10-user-base-on-steam-climbs-to-all-time-high-of-5123

Then PUBG began its rise and it started to change: https://www.game-debate.com/news/23...ndows-10-in-september-2017-according-to-steam

Edit: To further prove the point, the preferred language on Steam is now almost 64% Simplified Chinese: http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/

I run both Win10 (albeit a heavily tweaked one to resemble and behave like my tweaked Win7 and even better) and Win7 ... that probably screws up the perception of the statistical results, hah.

Percentual Statistics are not suppose to be taken literally.

There are so many annoyances in it that it took me 3 days of tweaking the crap out of it to get something workable out, and it still doesn't feel as good, yes it's faster, smoother, but I still find myself hindered in multitasking performance.

By the way that 3 days is really a hugely relative number, 3 days for me with all the +10 year experience with Windows and considering I've tested Win10 2 times before and had a similar run half a year ago on a HDD but I scrapped it compeltely and reinstalled/retweaked fresh on a SSD, and I have stacks of notes and a ton of tweaks and registry setting names/locations I already know on my own, so that 3 days is quite a lot, it's full 16 hour work day tweaking, it's not sitting around half the time.

Huh. Thanks for letting me know about that. Just installed it.

I like Windows 10 otherwise. I even like the general interface. Just not that start menu. It's cool on a Surface or something, but I'd prefer this classic feel on my desktop.

edit: This is really nice! Why the hell didn't they just do this themselves...

Hasn't Classic Shell been dropped from development by the creator? Or is that a different Classic Shell? The one I know of, he said every time he turns around, M$ changes something in Win10 that breaks stuff all over CS, and he has to recode a bunch of stuff...

Ah damn.. I should have seen that earlier. Looks like he stopped developing right at December. He freed the source though, so perhaps some kind soul will pick it up by the next big Windows update.

I can deal with the standard menu, but this is so much more aesthetically "neutral" so to speak. Not sure how to put it. I still mostly use classic Win API apps, and that other interface doesn't always mesh well with it. But this is just aesthetics. It's not all that important, I guess.

I've been using it since like 2015 and until it stops working (which tbh I doubt a windows update will come along and make it not work) I will be thoroughly enjoying it :D

Anyways windows 10 task manager is awesome compared to windows 7 and being someone who uses multiple monitors the task bar being on both is a huge plus.

Well when people who are running newer hardware have no choice.....yay monopoly!
And probably all these computers are in schools and offices, tablets. Windows 7 Aero is great, its faster works well, use less RAM on older hardware. I read some games are not even working on 10. In steam there is different story. HP computer who came whit windows 7 will stay whit it forever.

Well, I don't know anything about it's design, but he seems pretty concerned about keeping up with Windows updates and their further and further departure from Win32 type of programming (which in his words made his app possible). I hope you're right though and it keeps working. It's a shame that MS couldn't just do it themselves. They already have a separate "Start Menu" mode in the settings which is very tab friendly... then a separate Tab interface on top of that!... and then the standard, hybrid desktop mockup we're more used to on 10. So why not a damn Win 7 style too? It's just better to me.

edit: There's even more use for this now because Win Phone is dead and tablets just aren't the huge market they thought it'd be. Time to rethink what their actual audience is.

Funnily, Apple is about to make the same mistake. There's talk of them of unifying iOS and MacOS somehow. It'll probably create the same headache it did on Windows, with the "app store" and standard application divide. As it stands now, Mac OS is still a better desktop OS than Windows 10... because it's know it's just a desktop OS.

Thats exactly right, if hardware still support Windows 7 these stats would be alot different. W10 still plagued with many issues (More so on older hardware) and I get asked all the time if I get a new computer can I get W7? I sadly have to say no sorry you cant. Im selling more used PC's then brand new ones hands down.
