Intel today introduced the Core i3-8130U dual-core (2-core/4-thread) ultra low-power processor for thin and light notebooks, and 2-in-1 convertibles. Based on the 14 nm "Kaby Lake-U" silicon, the chip features a TDP of just 15W, making it ideal for all-day power devices. It is clocked at 2.40 GHz, with 3.40 GHz Turbo Boost frequency, and packs 4 MB of L3 cache. In its TDP-down mode, the CPU idles at 800 MHz, lowering the TDP to 10W. Its dual-channel DDR4 memory controller supports up to 32 GB of DDR4-2400 or LPDDR3-2133 memory. On the display side of things are the UHD Graphics 620 iGPU with clock speed ranging between 300 MHz and 1.00 GHz, 24 execution units, and hardware-acceleration for H.265/HEVC with 10bpc color.

Dual core...

I have a 3.6 GHz dual core A9-9420 APU. The thing is freaking capable. There is still application for low power, cheap dual cores. Too bad that laptops with Core i3's are ridiculously priced in my country. If it has a Core i3 it'll cost +500€ instantly. Which is insane.

Dual core...
I don't see any problem here.
I am still using an i5 2410m which is also a DUAL-core and it runs just fine for web, code, wordprocessing and more.
So a newer gen Intel i3 dual-core with low power usage and higher performance is all good for those who want a slim laptop with good battery life.

Unltil 6 months ago $500 i7 u were dual cores. What are you even complaining about. If you want a quad core, you can get it, just not at the lowest end of the market.

I have 6/12 X5650 last 4 years, not complaining just wondering intel still pulling this dual core crap :)

Oh you have a special made 15W version of a 95W Xeon? That must be really nice. Cool laptop.

I have some Platinum 8180 right next to me and some strewn about Silver 4116s (around same MSRP as yours), which makes your comment pretty funny.

It isn't relevant in any way.

Yup, I also got a laptop with i% 2410M, with an SSD, it does almost everything competently, as long as I don't game. It is struggling mightily with watching 1080p youtube videos though. The playback can get stuttery sometimes.

On the topic of the i3-8130U, it will probably be competing with the laptop version of Ryzen 3 2200GE, let's see how well they work.

Shouldn't it say coffee lake instead of kaby lake?

I also wonder how it compares to a 7300U.

I also wonder how it compares to a 7300U.

It's Kaby lake by intel itself. Only real new Coffee lake chips are desktop i7s and i5s. Desktop "Coffee Lake" I3s are 4 core kaby lake chips. In mobile side they are all still Kaby lakes. Real Mobile coffee lakes will be 6 core i9s and i7s.

By comparing it to old kaby lake U processors, it's seems to be more like i7 7500U than i5 Us(Has same amount of Cache as the i7 Us). So underclocked old i7 7500u, in my opinion that is not bad.

Not everyone needs 4 cores. 2 cores at 3.4-3.2GHz is actually very good. It will handle web browsing like a dream, it will play games very well.

It has HT too, so 2c/4t.

I don't think he understands what laptop CPUs are and what desktop CPUs are.
there is people that have their limitations... closed world, or special needs for attention, that's why they compare laptop low power processor's with Xeon older generations processors...

I was talking about shitty intel policy selling crappy 2/4th cpu in 2018, and about the rest of your comments they are not relevant like Nokiron likes to say.

Be interested to see actual power usage, and outright performance when coupled with a 1030/1050 VS an AMD 2400g.

One of these and a 1050 would make a great low TDP couch gamer.emulator rig.

Because 99% of users dont need quad cores?

you dont need four cores for facebook or twitter, or office, or email, or watching movies, ece. Hence why they are so common in laptops. Dual cores work wonderfully for most users.

open your eyes, grow up, learn and share, if you will criticize try to bring facts, otherwise keep embarrassing yourself, acting like a kid comparing two products that have different lines and markets...and refusing others advises, still a free-world!

Also... dual core processors with HT have several market segments, low power and consumption computers, used by kids, schools, public places and market, if you are enthusiast enough (we all here know you are not close...) could build many things with this PC, even for a showcase,

ne of these and a 1050 would make a great low TDP couch gamer.emulator rig.
Cube case + micro ATX board + lowprofile GPU + decent cooling and storage could make a little livingroon-emulator rig, for fun with friends and so,

So you're comparing a 8 years old 32nm 95W CPU which uses DDR3, doesn't support PCI-E 3.0 etc. to this? Also, good luck finding a good X58 motherboard with a reasonable price..

I had a Pentium G4560 with GTX 970 SLI, it ran games very well, even that it's "dual core crap".
