Alright, thanks. Finally moving away from LGA 775, my games should run super fast now. :)

Just to make sure we are all on the same page, you do understand moving away from LGA 775 requires a totally different motherboard, right? And a new motherboard often means you will need different RAM too. And lastly, a new motherboard is considered a new computer for licensing purposes. That typically means to be legal you need a new Windows license unless you currently have a "full retail" license you will be transferring. Note that most licenses are not full retail, but OEM.

The point is, if your current motherboard supports LGA 775 CPUs, you cannot simply swap in a CPU with a different pin-count. It will not physically fit.

Yes we are on the same page. I have 4GBx2 of ddr3 already and a 8GB ddr3 stick, which will total to 16GB, i have a T3500 motherboard brand new and a 450W PSU. I have a windows 7 OS disc. I'm good to go, new CPU and a 750GB hard drive should arrive hopefully by Sat and I'm good to go. I'm using a GTX 550 TI, but currently planning to buy a Radeon Pro Card or something else. but keeping the gtx 550 for now and see how it runs with my games with the new cpu.

I have a windows 7 OS disc.
Just to make sure, it is not the disc that matters, that's just the media the software is delivered on. It is the license. If that disc says OEM or System Builders, that is not "full retail" and the license is tied to the original equipment the OS was installed on or came with.

When it comes to a new graphics card, make sure that 450W power supply will support the load.

Just checked your links they gone

first one is lower power/TPD and lower clocks http://www.cpu-world.com/sspec/SL/SLBV8.html)
Second one is higher Power/TPD and higher clocks ( http://www.cpu-world.com/sspec/SL/SLBV6.html)
If it was my money i was Spending i would go for the Second ( higher clocks at the expense of being more power hungry and higher TPD)
It will probably cost more but be more usefull long Term
At the end of the Day its your money for you to decide

A 95W CPU and considering a workstation with some more storage and (is it triple or quad?) channel RAM, I think you will find the headroom for a decent GPU to be very tight on 450W. Would personally bump up to 550-600, also in terms of quality of life (noise) and longevity.

That said, I would def. opt for the fastest Xeon you can buy on this socket, it has some age on it.

I'm just going to use my GTX 550 TI for now. I am bidding on a card though , guess i will find out late tomorrow if i win.

Trying to save some money ATM, this money is from my State tax, federal should be here next week. Didn't really want to touch that for anything, its for saving. I could have bought the Xeon 5670, but the Xeon L5640 6 Core is fine. I only play games at 1600x900 and 1920x1080 max or near max and I'm coming from using old tech LGA 775 cpus , so this will be all new to me and if the games is moving at 40-50-60fps i am happy. I can play Path of exlie at 1600x900 at full settings with full aa on my Intel 3360 + FIrepro V4800 and still get 60-80fps , so I'm not one of those people who strive to play games at the highest resolution at the highest settings all the time. The cpu i bought only cost me 17.99.

I thought the L5640 is 60W? That's what i read on 3 different sites. The GTX 550 ti only draws i think 116 W , if i have any problems though i will get another PSU, but i plan to use video cards that don't require 6 pin connectors, which is why i was using a firepro v4800 on my dell 780 a while back. BTW, i thought the Xeon 5670 was the fastest for 1366?

With 95W I was referring to the faster version
http://www.cpu-world.com/sspec/SL/SLBV6.html

But yes, if your GPU will remain under 150W, that PSU will be fine even with a bigger Xeon

EDIT: changed the link to the other one, had the V8 but the V6 is 95W

Fastset Xeon 56** is the X5690 6 core / 12 thread for general use
But there is a much rarer X5698 @4,4GHz its apparently a 6 core with 4 of then disabled

http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Xeon/Intel-Xeon X5698 - AT80614007314AA.html

Xeon X5698 is shipped in HP and Dell servers

Jul 19, 2011: In March we reported on the fastest clocked x86 processor, manufactured by Intel. The microprocessor is Everest series Xeon X5698, that has 2 CPU cores, operating at impressive 4.4 GHz. Internally, the chip has 6 cores, but 4 of them are disabled.

This is funny if you think about it, it took them a whoppin' 6,5 years to rush a 6c/12t out the door that can do 4.7 on ONE core @ stock. The only thing you can really give them is that they did lower the TDP from 130w to 95W for a 4.3 all core boost I guess

Is this a Dell OEM motherboard? I have looked for some x58, x79 OEM mobos from HP and Dell too, as they seem lower priced towards Asus, Gigabyte, etc... However take note that some of these mobos use special 24 ATX power connector (an adapter will do). I have heard they can have not so friendly and no extensive BIOS features, like in laptops (little overclocking). Report how it works out.

This is a Dell Precision T3500 MB, seems to take a normal 24 pin connector. This is my PSU https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153023 ( sorry i meant i have a 430w , not 450)
https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Dell-P...792847&hash=item3626363ba3:g:5QoAAOSwc-tY7o82 <-------- I didn't buy that btw, but what i ordered is the same one.

1366 is already really dated, so don't expect the fastest performance. Also, with a board like that, you'll likely not be overclocking. I get it if you're not into that, but these days it's kinda necessary for 1366 to keep up. That socket got a lot of love early on because it was already fast (for the time) but it had huge overclockability... which is why it's still sort of a viable choice today.

Yep, seems like a standart connector. Another thing with these OEM boards and resellers - often people who sell them rip every possible heatsink off- heatsinks over VRM`s and chipsets. It`s good idea to compare your board with some other images to check if anything`s missing. However this model looks the same on all pictures.

if there is still time to change your plans you would be better served (imo) going to sandybridge or later.
