Transcend Information Inc. (Transcend ), a leading manufacturer of storage and multimedia products, is proud to announce the release of the JetDrive 855/850 PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe solid-state drive (SSD) upgrade kit for Mac computers. The JetDrive 850 features read and write speeds of up to 1,600MB/s and 1,300MB/s, and is made of the latest 3D NAND flash. The JetDrive 855 includes a sleek aluminum Thunderbolt enclosure for a simple upgrade experience. Both models are the perfect upgrade for a MacBook Pro , MacBook Air , Mac mini , or Mac Pro .

PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe interface allows transfer speeds of up to 1,600MB/s
Transcend's JetDrive 850 features the PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe interface, meaning four lanes are used to transmit and receive data simultaneously. The result is compelling performance of up to 1,600MB/s read and 1,300MB/s write. Crafted of 3D NAND flash memory, the JetDrive 850 is reliable, highly compatible, and brings a whole new level of performance to Mac computers.

Thunderbolt technology in a sleek enclosure
Transcend's JetDrive 855 features as its storage media the JetDrive 850 PCIe NVMe SSD. Utilizing a 10Gb/s Thunderbolt interface, the drive boasts blazing-fast transfers. The JetDrive 855 is housed in a sleek, aluminum alloy enclosure designed to tastefully complement the Mac's simple, clean design. In addition, the SSD inside can be removed, making it even more adaptable to user preferences.

Monitoring SSD Health with Exclusive JetDrive Toolbox
Transcend's exclusive JetDrive Toolbox, a free download from the Transcend website, is a software kit tailor-made for Transcend's Apple Solutions. JetDrive Toolbox helps users to maintain a healthy SSD by keeping it up-to-date, preventing functional degradation, and predicting problems before they occur. Easy to use, the Toolbox includes Drive Information, Health Indicator, and Firmware Update functions.

Transcend's JetDrive 855 and JetDrive 850 come in 240GB and 480GB capacities, and are backed by Transcend's five-year limited warranty.

Internally? No. Apple uses a proprietary connector instead of m.2 (or soldered-on drives in the latest Pro models) but if you wish to use it externally with the included enclosure in the one SKU, then all you need is a thunderbolt port.

Apple sure was on to something when they made the garbage can PC...

This type of external drive would be ideal if it was USB-C and bootable.
It would eliminate another heat source from inside the systems.

Both Realtek and JMicron were showing controllers for NVMe to USB-C 3.1 gen 2 at Computex, so it's coming. The problem is, you got very limited bandwidth, so you won't really reap the benefits of an NVMe drive, unlike using Thunderbolt, as it gives you the full drive bandwidth.
