I hate to thread crap here, but that's likely a greymarket key (it'll work but it's being used outside it's intended market and really isn't technically legal to sell that way).

Actually, given that is by it's own admission an OEM key, and they aren't shipping hardware with it, there you have it. Not legal.

May be a good deal if you just want activation, but tweaktown really shouldn't be advertising that kind of stuff. Then again given their recent behavior all I can do is say I'm not surprised.

Thing is, TweaTown just wrote it.

Lets be honest, it isn't just TweakTown pushing these deals. I see them on youtube videos and on other sites as well. Not taking sides on its legality, but it is a widely known source for keys and is getting promoted around the web, not just from a single source. ;)

For instance, I just saw one last week, or maybe two weeks ago for this site offering W10 and office for like $40-50, and it wasn't from TT.

I actually used this promotion from tweak town to buy a windows 10 pro key.. Didn't get scammed so I assume it's a legit website even though it looks a bit fishy. Absolutely use paypal though.

You mentioned that you purchased a key from this website, how long ago did you purchase and activate it?

Oh I'm aware but isn't it usually in clearly posted ads or similar?

This almost looks like it's coming from an official tweaktown editors feed. Kind of gives it a form of legitimacy I don't like. Maybe I'm sheltered.

I know what your thinking, how they used to find them and deactivate them...

I'm betting with Windows 10 now binding to the mobo with a hardware signature, they probably don't bother anymore. But uncertain either way.

They dont. Completely does not weigh up to the effort required

Activated 10 days ago I figured since the key is bound to your mobo after activating as long as you can Activiate the key it should be good to go for the long term. Really my only concern was getting a key that wasn't already activated and they delivered exactly what they promised so, $12 well spent?

I can chime in on this one. I actually called Microsoft to verify the keys I purchased($14 each at the time) were legit. They are. I went back and got a couple more and a bunch of Windows 7 keys. While they didn't give specific details it seems to be a test market platform kind of thing and it seems to be working as MS has received a ton of money from the venture. The site may seem shady, but it's legit, so far.

I see them on youtube videos
That's actually were I saw them first. It was a sponsor plug on a video from "PhilsComputerLab". They take Paypal, so I figure it was worth a shot and the risk would be minimal.

OEM installs have always been tied to the motherboard. As far back as Xp that I'm sure of. Maybe even before then(wouldn't surprise me if it's been that way since 98 at least). Anyway, certainly not new with Windows 10.

And, rumor is, it's still the same as it's ever been. All you need to do is call them and give them a good excuse as to why you needed to replace your motherboard, and you can get it reactivated. Even if it is OEM.

On that note. If anybody's wondering whether the version of Windows 10 you got from upgrading W7/W8 OEM is really retail(like it says it is) or not. It is. And if you link it to your M$ account before swapping motherboards, you be able to activate it again on the new motherboard. Provided you still have your key for W7/W8. I know because I just did it. And that was all I needed. After a call to India for an explanation of what I needed to do with it. The fact that I was needing to reactivate due to a hardware change was never even discussed. It was as simple as "did you uprade from W7/W8?", "do you have your key?", "here's what you need to do to reactivate W10 with it", "thank you for choosing Microsoft".

I bought two of them a month ago and have used one on a completely fresh Windows install with zero issues. I learned about the site via a YouTube video and got the keys for $12.60 each with an affiliate code. The keys were delivered within an hour to my user account, and I had no problems paying with PayPal.

While it is grey-market and may be frowned upon legally, I still consider it a better alternative than outright cracking it, which MS finally struck down a few months ago and now you can't just use a certain "toolkit" anymore.

Anyway, certainly not new with Windows 10.

No, it is new with Windows 10. The difference being it was once license wording and now it actually will autoactivate on the new motherboard from an actual database (enforced).

There's some kind of miscommunication here. I don't actually know what you mean by "autoactivate", or "new motherboard". If they mean what I think they mean, and it applies to OEM Windows installs, I can tell you from a vast amount of experience that it is false. So let me now tell you what my experience has been in these matters. If an OEM key has been used to activate Windows Xp/Vista/7(don't know for sure about 8, never used it), that same key will NOT activate Windows Xp/Vista/7 on another motherboard. I know this because I've tried it dozens of times. And it's never worked. Microsoft most certainly does know the OEM key was used to activate Windows on a particular motherboard, and is no longer good for another activation on a different motherboard. There has always(so far as I know) been a database. Or how else would they know an OEM key has been used? However, if that other motherboard is EXACTLY the same(type, brand, model, etc.) as the one the OEM key was used for during the initial activation, or it is a different motherboard that is similar enough and/or has an SLIC for whatever version of Windows it is, then yes...it will work. And it will autoactivate on the other motherboard without even needing to enter a key(as if the motherboard never changed). I know this because I've done this dozens of times as well. In fact, I've never owned or installed any non-OEM version of Windows(prior to the version of Windows 10 that I upgraded from W7 OEM to). OEM is pretty much all I know. I also know that, even with the "supposed" retail version of Windows 10 that was linked to my M$ account ahead of time, activation on a "new" motherboard was not automatic. Even when it technically should have been. I still had to go through the runaround to get an activation that was owed to me. Since the version of Windows 10 I have is labeled as retail. And my M$ account tells me I'm allowed to install it on up to 10 different devices at any given time. But it can only be active on one of them at any given time. I'm also allowed to delete devices from the list and add new ones at any given time(but always limited to only 10 different devices). The number of times I'm allowed to actually activate it on a device is virtually unlimited(if not completely unlimited).

I've been experiencing something else if there aren't any hardware changes Windows will automatically activate in the background, if I swap out the the cpu and or motherboard, it will prompt for a key but will still activate with the same key. Other than preventing the same key being used on multiple machines simultaneously which I haven't tried doing, I don't see what it is being enforced.

Not sure what the story is with why it wouldn't work for you, but I have two OEM keys for W7 Home Premium I have used across a number of different Motherboards without question (at least 3 boards per key), as long as only one is active at a time they will activate, ie, a board must be retired for the next to work.

You can find these keys for as low as $2-3 on eBay

Microsoft cares about marketshare, they don't care. Might as well make it free to use. I guess beta ring is free?

If that key is OEM and being sold without hardware, then I'm pretty sure that it's illegal, especially with such a suspiciously low price.

It's possible that Microsoft said it was legit (poster above) because it either didn't realise what was happening, or is looking the other way in the interests of market penetration.

I hate my moral compass. As good as these deals sound.....I can't do it. Not because some of these sites can't be trusted or that I might get screwed out a few bucks should it not go through, but because I always feel if it is something I can and will use, then I'll go through the appropriate channels.

I use Winrar - purchased a key.
I use MakeMKV - purchased a key.
SecurityTaskManager - purchased a key (haven't used it for a while)
UniBlue - haven't used it since XP days, but purchased a key.
UltraMon - haven't used it since I moved from 2 to 3 monitors, but I still have my key.

A few other programs out there that I used in the past that I don't remember....I'd have to go through my registration key list to see others, but I know there are a few more.

.....just a poor sap, I am, when it comes to things like this.

A while back, I bought a couple windows 10 pro retail keys (not from this site) , they were intended to be used for new builds for my kids, myself , etc. but I haven't been able to use even one of them ,because every time I go to upgrade one of the old computers, the old windows 7 key still works in activating windows 10 . Certainly a good problem to have.
