You know it boys and girls, we all have it from time to time and its growing every week, the itch! the itch for new PC parts.

Im thinking its pretty damn close time to upgrade this old FX AM3 system, but only 3 parts, the Motherboard, CPU and RAM. I have been looking at getting the 2700x, unless AMD come out with the 2800x in the next 2 weeks haha. I have looked at a few motherboards and there are few requirements I would like to have. I like to go big and then just call it a day for many yrs to come. So I might as well go X470

So requirements are:

It must support Windows 7
Support SLI
3466Mhz memory.

The two main contenders I have found so far are:

Asus Prime X470 Pro https://www.asus.com/au/Motherboards/PRIME-X470-PRO/HelpDesk_QVL/
and
MSI X470 Gaming Pro Carbon https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support/X470-GAMING-PRO-CARBON#support-mem-14

Out of those two im leaning towards the MSI board as it actually lists all the drivers for W7.

My biggest issue so far is trying to find RAM thats for sale that is in there listed support list for this motherboard/CPU, I cant really find any.....

Anyway if anyone has other suggestions please let me know or where I can buy said RAM for the motherboards listed (mainly the MSI board) I dont mind buying from over seas.

Oh my PC at the moment seems to be handling most games well but the 8GB RAM is the most limiting factor I have found. I could just through in 16GB and wait, but argh! that itch!

Personally I'd go with a first gen Ryzen at this point. The 1800x is cheaper than the 2700, at least where I live, while the 1600x is the best bang for the buck at €170.

Sadly where I buy my parts from they dont have the 1800X or the 1700X and I was really waiting for a 4GHz 8 core CPU to come out and the 2700X fills that just right

Take a punt & go with the 2700, OC it to the limits unless you're looking to run either at stock, in which case 2700x wins hands down. I'd also advise you to get the cheapest 3200MHz RAM, for now, as DRAM prices may crash in the next year or so. Don't cheap out on the mobo ~ ASrock & ASUS would be my first two picks, in that order.

Get Ryzen refresh / 2000 series. Much easier to get memory to run at high speeds, even on 300 series chipsets. I'd go for 3200/CL14 mem.

Might as well go 2700 non-X, use the money saved for an even better cooling solution

I would wait until the next gen Intel and AMD are out, check out the benchmarks and prices and then take the plunge. It won't be too long now and Intel won't go down without a fight, which is great news for us.

I prefer not to OC and for only just alittle bit more and you get a decent stock cooler the 2700X for me is a no brainer.

RAM on the other hand there is about maybe at most $50 difference between 3200 and 3466 but the problem is just trying to find any at a store/online store seems to be near impossible.

@R0H1T I used to go with Gigabyte for well the past 15+yrs without fail, and I was going to go ASrock but none of there X470 boards fit my requirements sadly.

Yeah, I'm keen on that, too. A mainstream Intel true 8 core with that IPC advantage should be awesome. I reckon it will still outperform Ryzen 2 in gaming and multitasking, but that the difference will be smaller than with Ryzen 1.

Yup. Thats unfortunate. It's sad that people get stuck in one thing and wont venture away from it.

Ahh, that itch. Right now for me it feels like it's exactly at that point where it remains out of reach and can't be scratched.

If you're going to install Windows 7, Ryzen 2xxx series may be the last CPUs from AMD that will work with it relatively fine. It's unlikely that Zen 2 will still work completely fine with W7 (although I could be wrong).

Remember that you'll have to slipstream USB 3.0 drivers into the boot image, and NVMe requires a hotfix to be slipstreamed too, IIRC.

With an XFR enabled Ryzen I can get that youre not looking to OC honestly. No fiddling and no risk of instability is valuable and XFR gets close enough anyway. But, then definitely pick up the latest, those clock bumps are nice to have, and pair it with decent RAM

I use Windows 7 on my coffee lake i5 8600K. The Z370 motherboards from AsRock will install easily. You enable PS/2 Simulator in the bios and it installs perfectly. Then you install the usb drivers off the disk. After that , turn off the PS/2 simulator. Update windows until it stops, and then run WUFUC from github which patches the Windows Updater so that it ignore your CPU.
If you have a PS/2 keyboard and mouse you can probably install it without the simulator option. AsRock has removed the PS/2 simulator bios option from a few of the newer boards I have noticed.
I don't understand why people crap on Windows 7 users on here but for me, running the older OS on a newer platform is super smooth and trouble free. Best machine I have ever owned.

3466 ram on ryzen is hit or miss. You're better with a 3000 CL14 dual rank kit, ryzen likes low latency and dual rank.

Also to add, make sure you get the Samsung B dies. One way to make sure you get that is to get the 3000 or 3200 CL14. That 14 latency will tell you it is a Samsung B die.
