Lenovo is mincing no words to talk about NVIDIA's upcoming GeForce 11-series graphics processors being part of its future GPU options for desktops and notebooks. LaptopMedia reports that the company is planning to make the mid-range GeForce GTX 1160 an option for its Legion Y530 15-inch gaming notebook. It features a 15.6-inch IPS display with Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) resolution, and a 144 Hz option for this display. Back to the GTX 1160, and LaptopMedia seems to confirm that the GPU will feature 6 GB of dedicated memory. If NVIDIA is doubling memory with this generation, this could indicate 6 GB to be a successor to the GTX 1060 3 GB; and the likelihood of a better endowed 12 GB GTX 1160 to succeed the GTX 1060 6 GB. It could be an action-packed 2H-2018 for PC graphics.

I wouldn't put 12gb of vram on a GPU this level if i was nvidia. Thats a waste of money... Than again, how do you approach symmetric mem controllers to chip ratio and go beyond 6GB.

I guess they could use asymmetrical design for 8GB

12 Gb 1160? Not gonna happen. Most likely main 1160 is a 6 Gb card like 1060.

Or 6 for the 3 gig replacement and 8(7.5) for the 6 gig replacement.

Yes, that’d be more likely (no 7.5 please :D). Wondering if 1160 8GB could be on par with my 1080.

Depends of the memory bus, I don't think that they'll do the same like with GTX 550 Ti, 650 Ti Boost, 660 and 660 Ti, those had 192-bit bus and had 1 or 2GB of VRAM with mixed density chips.

And 12GB VRAM on a mid-end card? Ain't gonna happen, unless some AIB makes their own model with double memory.

1536 Cuda 5GB 160 bit and 1792 6GB 192 bit versions. In no way can there be 12GB.

GDDR5X could only have 1GB and 2GB chips but with GDDR6 you can also have 1.5 GB. that means you could have a 192 bit card with 9 GB of vram or a 256 bit card with 12 GB of vram.

EDIT: http://monitorinsider.com/GDDR6.html

"Today, a GPU with a 256-bit bus can only cleanly support 4GB, 8GB or 16GB. With GDDR6, they will also be able to support 12GB, while still maintaining a full balanced load with identical sized memories connected to each controller."

Maybe that lesser card still uses gddr5s, so it might just be 6GB with 6x8Gbps 8Gb gddr5 on 192bit bus. And yeah nvidia haven't done asymmetrical memory configurations since Kepler.

Sure there can, i.e. 6x 10Gbps 16Gb gddr6 = 12GB of vram on 192bit bus.

I would rather they leave more production to just DDR4, when it is so expensive now.
