Streaming has been a big thing over the past year or two....perhaps you just finally took notice?

I'm really not that bored, ever. If I'm not playing a game, I'm sure as hell not sitting there watching some one else play, that's just stupid and a waste of time if you ask me.

If I had the extra spare time, I'd much rather find a nice shady spot out side with my nearly 14 year old husky and sit and enjoy the quietness of the outdoors. We do this a couple times a week when it's not too hot out in the shade, nor too buggy. He can't get around very well anymore and he loves just being outside and I'm so tired of all the constant noise around me (work, kids, wife, other random stupid people) that I need a way to calm and center myself before I go off on some one.

That's what I would do with extra spare time, not watch some one play a video game.

If you're really interested in the game and the presenters are good it can actually be pretty relaxing to watch streams. I've watched some of the Stellaris developer streams. Lets plays can be pretty decent too, if the presenter is entertaining. I've also watched some Starcraft pro matches, and they are very dependent on the commenters (like all sports).

But yeah I don't get how it's such a huge phenomenom. Or how you can love your life entirely on youtube and/or tumblr, but on the other hand I over 30 and so I don't really have a right to judge how todays youngsters are living their lives. When I was young we didn't get actual riots over social media.

But in the end I find videos to be a lesser form of information delivery. I've tried to watch some car repairing video stuff but either the presenters are unsuffsrable, or the information is wrong (wrong model of the car, which they don't bother bringing up), or they assume you know stuff before hand and have access to all the tools in tte world ("now just cut this off and weld on the replacement") or they assume you know nothing.

Samr with tech videos. I don't care if I agree with you, but if you can't write it down it's likely not worth knowing.

I don't have any social media life, except forum hopping to places like this. Even that being the case though, I still don't get it. If I'm going to watch a vid about games, it's more likely a review site or some funny commentary on youtube.

Most gamers that stream their sessions have zero viewers. Not sure why it became popular. Probably because people thought they could make a ton of money like Pewdiepie, playing games all day.

If you're good, and interact with viewers, maybe you'll make a few dollars. There's better ways to earn money.

I've been aware of it but on a different gaming forum I've noticed every new "need help building a PC" post requires the PC being able to stream. Guess I finally did take notice.

This probably doesn't help my case, but it doesn't take over my screen (focus). No... I continue what I'm doing on my computer and have it streaming on the TV.

This is pretty much my take. I watch my son's YT streams here and there. And sometimes I'll watch a stream to figure out a part of a game, or rather if I want to buy said game. Let's Plays I find handy for that. I usually jump around though or have it playing on the second monitor while I'm focused on the primary. Then I'll build up an annoyance and close it out lol.

i like to see tournament, CSGO competitive tournaments and game review streams, mostly from developers, but there is people streaming bullshit and game session with cheats and hacks just to gather more fans, likes and shares, streaming is something that went out of control and trust, you cannot trust all great moves and players on the internet now days, my two cents

Yeah... ...never got it. I remember as a kid when one friend had that 1p game we all wanted to try, we would take turns playing it. But back then you always wanted to be the one playing it. I remember some kids being such bogarts. It was the worst. If you could, you'd convince them to let you borrow it so you could play it at home. So I kind of have it ingrained in me that I don't wanna watch other people play games I like, lol.

Lets plays I could take or leave. I see some and I can acknowledge that they bring some interesting personality and/or well-traveled commentary, and I assume that's what people watch for, rather than the gameplay. That's cool to me. I wouldn't watch it but I get it. Other times it's just something to put up that people can stare at while they talk or whatever. I'm betting most people keep stuff like this on in the background. I see the appeal. Still not for me. Greatly prefer music for that.

Personally what really puts me off is the overwhelming number of people clearly doing it only for the money and the following. It's garbage content and it's everywhere, just kinda smushing together in this mass of shluck. I personally can't be assed to sift through that to find one I like. But people eat it up, so it becomes the precedent. If people believe it works, they're gonna do it, even if most let's players/streamers aren't actually very successful at all. And to really do it, you've gotta put in all of this time and energy to gathering and engaging with your viewer base. And to even be able to do that, you can't really work a normal job, so if the money's not coming in you're living poor while you're trying to put up this front like you're happy and enjoying what you're doing, when really you're tired, hungry, and worried about the future. Just doesn't seem worth it unless you really love what you do. Otherwise you could pick up a trade and start making more cash almost right away. And you might even do less work! You might actually have more time!

But then, I'm not one to really talk. I'm just not a fan of passive entertainment in general. From the moment I wake up to when I go to sleep, I am actively engaged in something. Even when I'm winding down, I am doing something. I'm never that bored that I just want to sit and watch something like that to pass time. I have a lot of hobbies because I get antsy just sitting and doing nothing. The only way you get me to do that is if I'm either with someone I really love, or I'm out hiking/camping. Can't stand to sit still for too long. Can't really turn my brain off like most people, so I can't relate.

Instructional videos are another thing I don't get. Sometimes it's helpful to see certain things, but most of the time it takes only a couple of minutes at most to get what you need via reading vs skimming around through a 15 minute video (or giving up and watching through,) just to get whatever info you're missing. The last thing I wanna do when I'm right in the middle of something is stop and watch a f-ing video.

Streaming is for kids who need to git gud, or can't afford a nice rig for themselves, or aren't allowed on the gaming rig more than X hours per day and are out of that time.

Let's not fool ourselves. Its the same hype as listening to the radio. Its simple, its cheap, and accessible. And it even has a social element on top.

Also: yes we are getting old

I got onto a server once in Escape from Tarkov and my kid started crying. This guy who wouldn't shut up the whole time through cause he was "streaming" ("Hey buddy, thanks for the dollar! Should I get on me knees now?) kind of talk was annoying. Anyway, my kid started crying and he told me to shut my kid up. I told him to go whore himself somewhere else. Good thing was, everyone else in the game made fun of him and we all left, and then harassed him till he closed his twitch stream. So justice was served.

After that, I thought streamers were nothing but a bunch of nobodies trying to get internet bucks for playing a game and talking stupid.

Streaming in the Race Sim world is very very valuable. It is used for learning driving techniques and being evaluated on driving skills or lack of for improvement purposes...it is pretty popular in race sims if its an available option that is for sure. Race Sim users are not usually children either as they are usually in the 30 -55 year old range (yes there are children playing race sims BUT more users are not children)... there is a lot of real use for this service besides being bored and needing something to watch.... I do enjoy watching a streamed race of my friends or the top racers while having a nice cup of coffee and a relax.....I mean really this streaming is just akin to watching TV and what people like to watch is very individualized and preference.

My youngest daughter has been streaming for about 2 1/2 years on Twitch, with various games, but the last year and half has been mostly Overwatch.
She has become a fairly popular streamer and even Blizzard has taken notice.

Last year Twitch asked her to be on the Front Page Spotlight and then at the Christmas Holiday Blizzard asked her if they could Highlight her on the Blizzard Launcher.
Just a few month's ago Blizzard again contacted her to participate in the BCRF to help raise money and she was able to be the highest fundraiser streamer with just under $28,000. We had over 60,000 viewers and it was an Awesome event. Blizzard raised about $12 million for the event.

She has had Hair dresser licenses for several years, and left a very highend salon in Dallas to go into full time streaming. She has made a very good community and love's to interact with the viewer's and Always wears appropriate clothing, not like some of the "scantly clad" streamers.

I will say I am Very proud of her for taking such a Huge risk to do it and most of all she is happy, and several hundred viewer's are just as happy to enjoy her passion daily.
She just got back from the Overwatch League Playoff's after Blizzard again gave her a VIP invite to it.

Twitch has led me to some other really awesome streamers, and one that I really enjoy is doing Space related stream's. She came from a "Very well known streamer" as a Mod to do her own stuff because let's face it, Space is WAY cooler that the same ole pubg ect stuff !

Technically speaking, I do watch streaming, but not continuous. I pull up vids of people running specific builds, or locations in the games I'm playing, to help with my own playing. I also check out the "Highlight Reel" vids released by Kotaku semi-regularly for the lols. Oh, and I enjoy watching some of the "best of" from some of the PUGB streams occasionally.

I don't stream my gaming sessions, don't send out pictures of my lunch in Instagram and don't announce my latest BM on twitter. I just don't think that other people are all that interested.

What? You must be broken. That's just not normal anymore. I'm calling you out....you're a phony!

Personally, I don't care about other people enough to allow them in on my personal life through social media. I don't have any kind of social media account. A few forums I visit and post in are the extent of my online legacy. I've gone a few rounds with the wife and all the crap she puts up on facebook. She may not put on there things like when we are going to be out of town or anything, but she's constantly posting pictures of things we've done and putting our kids pictures on it.....it still pisses me off to no end.
