Discord is currently (maybe not so arguably as that) the most popular social gaming platform there is, and counts with millions upon millions of players (it counts some 150 million users) using its services daily. Of course, after a userbase has been defined and taken a hold of, new opportunities and ways of increasing the bottom line - while simultaneously, if possible, adding more value to that same userbase - becomes paramount to growth.

Discord thus has decided to dip its toes in the games delivery service. On the one hand, it's yet another platform for game splintering across multiple accounts and services, thus vying for app attention in our systems. On the other, it's another competitor to the juggernaut that is Steam, but comes loaded with already-implemented social features which the latter will take a long time - if at all - to correctly implement. Discord is choosing to take this time at first, with just 50,000 users enrolling in their store interface, and offering a drum-roll selection of games - which they aim to be more of a curated service than a "rolling snowstorm of titles" affair. Besides directly selling games, they'll be adding free games accessible to subscribers of Discord's Nitro service.

At first, the titles available in the service are:

  • Dead Cells
  • Frostpunk
  • Omensight
  • Into the Breach
  • SpellForce 3
  • The Banner Saga 3
  • Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire
  • Hollow Knight
  • Moonlighter
  • This is the Police 2
  • Starbound

As for their Nitro subscription service, the following games are available:
  • Saints Row: The Third
  • Metro: Last Light Redux
  • Darksiders : Warmastered Edition
  • De Blob
  • Tormentor X Punisher
  • Dandara
  • Kathy Rain
  • GoNNER
  • Kingdom: New Lands
  • System Shock Enhanced Edition
  • Super Meat Boy

No thanks. I avoid Discord - it's clunky looking and hurts my eyes.

Those that want to use Discord, by all means, enjoy. I just wish Steam didn't push out shitty updates to the UI to make it look like Discord and to also run like crap. I still force the old UI with -nochatui -nofriendsui because the new look is painful to use and look at. I suppose Valve caught wind about what Discord was doing which is why they rushed the updates without making sure they actually work properly.

I'm in complete agreement. Thank you for the bit about the old UI. I'll implement that when I get home.

I didn't even know such thing exists. I'll try it when I get home, thanks. :D

There's been a handful of postings on the Steam forums referencing this info, but it's easy to miss or not even know it exists if you're not looking in the right spots. Just create a short cut, add those to the target and it should look something like this: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steam.exe" -nochatui -nofriendsui

Just make sure you don't have Steam setup to auto launch and utilize the shortcut you made. If you insist on having Steam auto launch, then you need to edit a registry entry:

start -> run/search -> regedit
browse to
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
edit "Steam"
add
-nochatui -nofriendsui

I'm not sure if anything doesn't work properly for steam VOIP or such things if you force the old friends/chat UI. I don't really use voice chat with anyone other than my younger brother, but we haven't been able to find time to co-op in a game for the past few weeks due to scheduling.

I never even paid attention to the change in steam.. Lol
But I generally launch from icon, Cortana or from Big Picture so it's not something I'd of noticed.
The other day I could have sworn Discord was launched but it was steam. Didn't even notice then... Lol

I think progress is always welcomed, so cool.

I like Discord but I'm a firm believer that communication and games should be separate. And stores that sale games should be separate from their delivery networks.

Discord needs to add a forum like BB in Discord. It would be amazing to have Text, Forum, and Voice channels.
