I don't care how fast your internet is, electing to skip sleep in favor of X frivolous activity is a choice. The gigainternets aren't illegally downloading all your sleep against your will.

I'm actually stuck on ADSL, but it runs at about 20Mb/s which is really fast for this old tech, since I'm close to the exchange. I was curious a while back how much I could download over an entire month of continuous 24/7 action and was surprised that it came to just over 1TB. Sweet. Therefore, a service capped at, say, 1.5TB/month will effectively be unlimited for me.

If you're curious, I just downloaded the same few Steam games with large installs such as GTA V over and over again. Oh those poor Steam servers...

I don't even know how much I have, but I think it's like 6mb only,and I don't want more. I like buying boxed games anyway, and I don't mind waiting a day to download something.If I run the numbers and add all the money I save by owning the cheapest of the cheap internet services on my PC and not using internet on my phone at all, it gives me a really pretty sum of money at the end of the year. It adds up to the cost of a new i7 CPU easily.
However,if I had super fast internet, I think I would just buy ridiculous amounts of new games compulsively, just to check them out, and that would contribute to losing sleep and productivity.

You may say that slow internet really keeps me in check. I only buy what I wanna play,AAA mostly,and I don't buy anything until I finish playing what I bought.

The test says 2.57 but I have a few things running.

I think if you find out how much your paying for the ADSL internet, you might find that FTTC might be as much or possibly less depending on who you use for your provider

I to prefer big box games, I collect games, retro and new. I sometimes end up buying twice because they are cheap on Steam and I'll grab a couple copies for a few people or two accounts. I tend to stick with anything over a tenner just waiting until its on offer to be under a tenner... This is why I'm yet to buy GTA 5. That also said, I hate waiting for games to download, my fibre connection isn't the best and to be honest I'd willingly pay for it to be a lot faster.. I did even ask about a FTTP connection that I'd have to pay for myself.. But sadly never had a reply to find out how much it was.
It's frustrating because you have a massively powerful PC but an internet connection that is the speed (in comparison) like a floppy drive.. It's damn frustrating....

As mentioned in the article, correlation ≠ causation.
Also, defining DSL as “high speed” is laughable. Sure it is better than dialup, and will work with normal, light browsing.

My anecdotal evidence is that my 500/500 fibre connection has no impact on my sleep, but then again, it is not a ADSL connection in the UK, and I am not German (half of the responders in the cited study was German)

It's still "high speed" and even the original 0.5Mb/s ADSL from 2000 is waaaay better than dialup - I should know, because I had it. You can still do large downloads on it, even with something like 4-5Mb/s, but will have to wait rather longer, is all. 1080p video will stream on that just fine, too. It's still broadband, just not quite as "broad", lol.

Interestingly, the minimum speed required for 4K streaming is 25Mb/s, so mine is a bit short of that.

Yeah, I grew up with Dial up, we had several computers but only one POTS line, and that was usually for actual phone calls.

Had a few months at my parents house a few years ago, they were, and still is, on a 16 m/bit ADSL line, the fastest possible with their distance from the exchange. It was not capable of multiple users doing anything other than light browsing.

The fact that politicians define a speed, as “high speed” does not make it so, did my share of shady downloading of games over 1 GB. When we got the first ADSL line, at 2 mb/s, it took a lot of time, and since my computer was in my bedroom, I would have been able to go to bed faster if the download speeds had been higher, in counter to the point in the linked article[/QUOTE]

Perhaps the study should have been on boredom. Do bored people get more sleep?

In terms of broadband (non-country specific :rolleyes:

broadband) I guess if your "work" involves a lot of Internet access, a faster connection could let you finish your work faster, thus allowing you to get more sleep.

To me, the money for the study could have been put to better use, like curing cancer or hunger, or child abuse.

I'm on BT infinity and I get 87mb/s download and 30 up or something. I usually have it for bragging rights. I can download a 2-3gb game update in around 10mins or less while for most my friends it takes 30-60mins. I love it!

If your downloading @ 87Mb/sec, your able to download about 5.2Gb a minute.. ?? I think you might need to double check the speed test results

Define fast? Ummm...pretty simple. As it's been predefined for decades now.

Ethernet (10BASE-X) : 10 Mb/s / 1.25 MB/s
Fast Ethernet (100BASE-X) : 100 Mb/s / 12.5MB/s
Gigabit Ethernet (1000BASE-X) : 1 Gbit/s / 125MB/s
10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GBASE-X) : 10 Gbit/s / 1.25GB/s
So on and so forth up to...
400 Gigabit Ethernet (400GBASE-X) : 400 Gbit/s / 50GB/s

You cannot use a definition from decades ago to define "fast". The Pony Express was fast - until the Railroad came along. A 56K modem was fast until broadband came along. Copper cable was fast until fiber came along.

And it is not just about how fast the chunks of data moves through the conductors and network, but how big those chunks are too, and the distance they have to travel, not to mention the number of hops.

"Fast" is a constantly moving target.

That said, I agree and educate yourself. Use your friend Bing Google. Just make sure you check timestamps and put everything into perspective.

"Fast Ethernet" is just a marketing term. It makes as much sense as "Rated #1" or "wireless router", or "best in class".

After a certain distance cat 3 utp is affected by attenuation.

True for any conductor. But I note most phone companies use CAT5e (or even CAT-6 in brand new facilities) anyway when pulling new cable.
