I think that gaming side of things can be fine, but if you can select the cores you want to do whatever you want, then 16 threads for gaming and then the rest can go crunching

I think it's a monster CPU, so impressed with AMD

For me, threadripper just gives me a platform to expand on.

I may have only gotten the 1900X but it'll still be leaps and bounds better than my FX-8320. It'll also let this RX Vega Liquid shine brighter. It also allows me access to the top 5% of all dies AMD puts in these CPUs.

Plan is, to upgrade to the 2950X next year sometime when the prices get cut down a bit.

Eventually, and I hope Gigabyte and AMD goes through with it... releases Zen 2 architecture on TR4 and releases BIOS updates to allow it on the X399 boards from Gen 1.

The most I will ever run on this board is 16-core. Don't need more than that. lol.

If I only play solitaire and candy crush, which Threadrumper do I need? Just for bragging rights, you know? Will I still be able to check my Hotmail? Please answer soon, as I have a burning desire to blow $2000 on a CPU I don't need. :kookoo:

Added multi OS review and max frequency to their respective sections in the OP.

One thing to note: there's a vast difference on the performance between Windows 10 and Linux as far as the 2990WX is concerned: something seems definitely wrong with how Windows manages this many cores / threads. If it were just one or two instances, one could argue it was the program in question but, of all the benchmarks ran, Windows was ahead only once, and was sometimes more then 100% behind the various Linux OSes performance.

This needs to be explored more in depth, IMO.

Didn't add this to the OP because it's not a review but i'll leave it here for awareness:

Of the games tested, one one didn't see a substantial increase when switching from a 1080 Ti to a RX Vega 64. Since the RX Vega 64 is a much slower card then the 1080 Ti, this suggests some issue with the drivers.
