Well the 8k cpu's won't disappear and if you don't really need to upgrade then it's better to wait and see what the 9k will bring.

since your rocking a rx 580 and a freesync monitor, you might as well just go full on AMD honestly. check out ebay for a 2700x or 2600x. you don't have to bugger with OC'ing anymore since they OC themselves fairly well.

intel = lots of security issues.

amd = no security issues.

plus if your rocking freesync and rx 580, you might want to stick with the whole AMD ecosystem, because at 1080p your not going to notice that extra 5-10 fps anyway.

Factor in the cost of a new Motherboard if you go AMD or the i5-8400 as neither will slot straight in to your current system.
The i5-8400 is actually socket 1151 V2 and not backwards compatible with your current board.
If all you want is an upgrade and better gaming experience, then the best CPU you can use now in your system is the i5-7600K or the i7-7700K.

If all you want to see is comparisons between the i5-8400 and the R5 2600 then Google Is your friend.

Get 8th gen.

9th gen will give us 8-core CPUs, but they'll be a lot more expensive than that 8400.
Cheaper 4/6-core CPUs won't change much (there is a chance Intel will just rebrand them).
