she will spin-off Radeon as a separate company once she's confident AMD has a CPU market leadership that is sustainable.

I hope not, that's a terrible idea. An independent GPU vendor would not survive with the current market conditions going up against Nvidia. If they ever manage to get back a lot of market share in the consumer PC space, I hope Lisa or whoever will be in charge then is smart enough to hold onto their GPU division.

This notion that their GPU division is a liability to AMD is just plain wrong. If anything it was the only reliable source of revenue ever since they acquired it.

Sony and Microsoft pays peanuts for those low end custom APU's. AMD is not the winner here. I'm obviously talking about PC GPU marketshare.

Price is irrelevant. AMD is clearly the winner here as they have the ENTIRE console market to themselves, and since the console market is so much bigger than the PC gaming market. AMD is king. So long as Nvidia are nowhere to be seen. They are winning.

Meanwhile AMD completely lost the GPU market after GPU mining dried out

And yet better than last year's same period by about 1% or so. You should check numbers as a whole. It's obvious from your comments that you don't like AMD, but stay on the ground of facts and stories-actions of recent months and year.

Haha wrong. What matters is what AMD gets out of it. And it's not much. But a few dollars is better than no dollars. For AMD every penny counts.
Once again, Sony (especially) and Microsoft are the winners when looking at the console market. Not AMD.

And yet better than last year's same period by about 1% or so. You should check numbers first.

Why, it's a fact. Vega is a joke. 300W with 1070-1080 performance.
AMD sits at less than 15% GPU market share these days.

Generally Vega 64/56 performance is "fine" but watt usage is a problem for some since it heats up the entire PC and room. If you live in a cold place maybe it's a good thing :p

Vega 64 is around GTX 1080 performance I think. So it's decent.

Vega56 has performance per watt which is near a 1070TI and has the same performance, vega64 is well.. not so great :D

Haha wrong. What matters is what AMD gets out of it. And it's not much. But a few dollars is better than no dollars. For AMD every penny counts.

And why should they?

They are making money off two of the biggest companies in the world.... Microsoft and Sony. Console marketshare is so much bigger than the PC market and AMD are in a good place from a business perspective. They will sell more console APUs then GPUs on the PC market even if they did have a competitive product because the amount of consoles out number PC builders and enthusiasts/gamers.

"Every penny counts..." - you say. But at the same time youre asking them to pull out of a market where they are absolutely dominant and I doubt AMD would keep the contracts with M$ and Sony if they werent making bank off it...

Being in the positive is better than being in the negative and so long as money is coming in then its good news for AMD --- "Every penny counts..."
not only have you contradicted your own comment/opinion. I find your opinion on this matter incredibly ignorant.

Let me try and break it down for you.... Smaller marketshare. less PC sales, Enthusiasts/gamers make up a small percentage of the market and most of them are probably on a 3 year upgrade cycle...

Im sorry, How many PC GPUs are you going to sell when hundreds if not thousands and millions of custom APUs in consoles are being produced and sold every hour???

Your comment is from a position of utter ignorance. Thank God youre not the CEO of AMD. you would of sent them into bankruptcy

Not quite. Vega 56 is 10-15% better than Vega 64.

https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/Radeon_RX_Vega_56/29.html

1070 is 145W on average in gaming.
Vega 56 229W.
Vega 64 292W.

1070 Ti generally beats both Vega cards in gaming perf. While using 50/125 watts less.

They are making money peanuts off two of the biggest companies in the world.... Microsoft and Sony.

Fixed.

You know, the console business is all about the software sales. Hardware is not profitable. It just needs to be cheap. AMD delivered cheap. Also, a generation lasts ~10 years (supported).

Why did you cheap out on GPU?

Why did you Nvidia when you said every little counts for AMD -- pot kettle black?

If NVIDIA had an x86 license, it would have dumped GPU-making completely.
I can't agree, Nvidia wouldn't drop gpu making just like that. Take a look at modern supercomputer solutions IBM + Nvidia make truckloads of money in that department and for them to move to the cpu market would mean them facing off against AMD, IBM and Intel.

Not sure why anybody thinks AMD is worried about GPUs at the moment. Even when the had the better product no one bought them. Everyone wanted that fancy Jacket.

I'm waiting to see how vega competes in Ray tracing against the new nvidia cards. I feel like that's going to be a closer race than the pascal cards against them in current games.

I doubt it'll be competitive at all.

Good thing that most games won't require it anyways. Or many won't even use it.

Very true, Even if they did they'd can't compete, Intel, AMD and IBM have been in the game too long and I'd cost them billions a year to even get anywhere near the performance they have.
