The promise of cordless, wireless, true freedom-of-movement VR gaming has been somewhat of an elusive unicorn, but HTC have finally taken one of the larger steps in that quest. After more than a year showing of the untethering wireless tech for the Vive headset, HTC has now begun shipping of the add-on. It's going for $299 - whether or not that price is justified in the current state of VR, and adding to the base headset's pricing, is something that is reserved for each prospective buyers' judgment. There are two months of Viveport added in the mix, though - that does virtually lower the entry pricing.

The adapter has a range of 6 meters, which should be enough for freedom-defining VR experiences - up to two hours in length at a time, of course. The data stream has been developed around Intel's WiGig tech, alongside DisplayLink's IP. Vive Pro owners, however, are being left in the cold already, in a move that will surely bring headaches to HTC - takers of the top-tier headset will have to splurge an additional $60 for a compatibility enabler for the new Vive Wireless Adapter. Ouch?

As a Vive Pro owner, this wireless solution is useless unless it has swappable battery packs, where one battery can charge in two hours, while the other drains. And that 2 hours is going to be 90 minutes after not too long.

As someone who loves VR and wants to ditch the cord, HTC are really taking the piss with this. The price is a little high, the battery is a little low, and the cherry on top is the additional kit required for those who purchased the Pro.

If they release the new headset in a wireless package and included an extra battery, at a cost of minimally 30% lower than what all those parts would come to individually, I would buy it. Thats about €950, I dont think Im being too tight with that. And honestly, thats a sooner rather than later deal.

Hmm i will let you know but i have like 5 Power banks right now so i dont think the "battery" will be the problem for me :)

Price wise. it is descent when you think off that the non-official one is the same Price.

BUT YES... That pro owners should pay more for the Wireless is just ridicules, HTC get a F.... grip.... :)

They need to get these things off the head and into a pack that clips on your belt.
