Sony PlayStation 5 Confirmed: "It's Necessary To Have A Next-Generation Hardware"

Some experts say that the console and PC will be irrelevant very soon: cloud gaming services will make dedicated and powerful hardware unnecessary, but Sony doesn't seem to agree. Kenichiro Yoshida, CEO of Sony, doesn't, and in an interview with the Financial Times he has made it clear that there will be a new PlayStation, although he has not confirmed whether the name of that console will be PlayStation 5.

John Kodera, president of Sony Interactive Entertainment, mentioned months ago in The Wall Street Journal how the company was working on new developments in this area. In fact he mentioned to analysts and investors that in March 2021 PlayStation would "crouch down once" to grow further in the future.

Those statements now join those of Yoshida, who stressed that hardware is still important. In fact he stated that "At this point, what I can say is it's necessary to have a next-generation hardware". Sony may be somewhat conditioned since Microsoft already confirmed that they were working on new generations of their Xbox One console, but that confirmation is in any case important.

Some may doubt the future of a hypothetical PlayStation 5 that will compete with both mobile phones and cloud gaming, but in the past we saw how the launch of the PS4 also faced similar reflections and the console has ended up being an overwhelming success. The same could be said of the Nintendo Switch, although both the PS4 Pro and the Xbox One X do not seem to have generated the interest that their creators probably expected. And yet, the hardware still matters, and Sony seems to have that very clear.

Consoles irrelevant? Sure. PCs? What the hell for?! They're not single purpose machines.. and they are easily expandable. And that you need them to create anything keeps them relevant anyways.

Cloud gaming. Are we going to limit gaming to highly connected areas with fast-as-hell broadband now? And just shut down the entire hardware industry (GPUs) because EA says so? I don't think so.

I have a feeling that cloud gaming will not work with crappy 2.5mbs download speed. There ain't crap worth internet where I live. I can't get anything better and Verizon 5g is still a long ways off from my area.

My SmartTV actually has (had?) a Gamefly option.

I feel sorry for the kid with parents who insisted on this as their gaming machine. They'll never go through the proper rituals of an actual gamer :D But this will happen soon enough much more. Companies will push it, and Best Buy employees will sell it as the "all in one" solution or something, tricking families into relying on this. And before we know it, games as a whole suffer, where the Streaming version is mainstream, and core versions of games will have to be downgraded just to pass the grade. As if consoles weren't enough of a detriment to begin with. :D

My ISP told me to upgrade from 100mbps down to 400mbps (only cost 3x as much) so that I could game on my roku and fire TV. I must say cloud gaming kicks ass, have any of you guys heard of the new game called...Tetris?? graphics are unbelievable!

I don't care what the experts say

I will always own my hardware for gaming or PC related stuff, don't care if they feel it's irrelevant it's how I feel that's relevant … chew on that experts.

are the human race becoming dumb down ? if we don't even know what's relevant to our needs ? and have to be told ?
then it's all about cheap business profit really.

It's sad because that's no joke. On Xbox One especially games now do in fact go as low as 720p or thereabouts. I understand console users supposedly don't care about graphics but that looks objectively horrendous.

Neither do I. Cloud gaming is just not in the stars. Don't and will never play games I don't actually own and run locally on my system. Agreeing with Sony here.

Pretty much all games are capped at 30 be it Xbox One or X. It's not better at all, if anything that adds insult to the injury, X owners are the only ones that actually see that framerate stay at 30 most of the time. But let's not beat around the bush, 30 is bare minimum for playability, there is no other way to put it, even the second gen consoles are unfit for high resolutions.

Not even close. A handful of them do offer a "60fps mode" at the expense of resolution, I put that in quotes since most of the time it's still far from a locked 60.

Yea that’s aload of bologna

Xbox One X and PS4 Pro can run 1080@60FPS

I can pull up a list now that can prove that

Xbox One struggled and still does which is sad for what’s suppose to be the easy entry into gaming but the Xbox One X is what the Xbox One should have been from the get go and does a great job running at 1080@60FPS even 1440 can manage upto 60FPS

Beyond that yes it locks at 30

Got a feeling eventually cable will be the only option. Telcos are very resistant to running new cable and they control all the cable networks. Instead they favor new cellular networks. Much cheaper to just drop a tower than to run physical wires. I can see it reaching a point where they'll claim they meet broadband standards via cell networks. Then people are left trying to engineer ways to remove the latency problems that cell brings.

Back in the day people had massive antennas or sat dishes to get TV. For decent cell internet it could very well be, people will start installing all sorts of things again just to boost signal and connection. Especially in rural areas. City centers will likely always gain the best connections unless a rural town invests in running their own network cables.

I'm thinking of going back to cable myself. Tired of waiting to see if AT&T gets fiber in my area.
