Right. Still better than the 250 though..
My point is that here we all are saying that 460 is slow these days, and 7770 isn't anything special compared to 460. Newer technology and lower power consumption, but that's where the pros end..

e: And when thinking, GTS 250 is 8800 GTS 512 after few rebrands, so it's basically 11 years old. :D

Not everyone is saying that though. The 460 is a decent card that was fast for it's day. It will still do a healthy and respectable amount of gaming. Anything around or above that level of performance will grant 8bitgamer757 a good experience and for less than $50 generally

Agreed. And while it can still do a decent amount of gaming, the Radeon 7770 is a much better card.

@8bitgamer757
Out of curiosity, did some looking on Ebay and found these Geforce cards;

These are only only examples of what is available within a sub $100 price range but they should give you a good idea of what can be had in an affordable price range.

Tried gaming on my old gtx 460 recently. Couldn't even run dota 2 or cs go with acceptable fps.
Nowadays for gaming I would not buy anything weaker than a 670 or 680. Of course you can go lower and of course titles from around 2000s will work but that would be more like retro gaming :)

One has to wonder what your framerate requirements are as both of the games you mentioned were released in the time frame the GTX 460 was available. When looking at the spec requirements for both of those games we find something interesting;
https://store.steampowered.com/app/570/Dota_2/
https://store.steampowered.com/app/730/CounterStrike_Global_Offensive/
Based on that info, direct from both of the game product pages, his current card(GTS250) is enough to play both of those games well.

People can we dispense with the misinformation? It's not doing anyone any favors and might potentially cause our young friend, who's come here looking for help, a disservice.

You are of course aware both games have gone through a number of graphical upgrades since release...I don't believe those system requirements have been updated, and yes I do agree that I do not enjoy playing 10 year old games on very low settings...do you think he does? Would very low graphical settings and 40-50fps constitute a good experience?

That would depend on the definition of "very low". And when one is working on a limited budget, something is better than nothing. You and others are arguing a point that is irrelevant. The young person in question has a 250. Getting something newer is going to present difficulties. So what they have and what they can get have to be kept in perspective. If a 460/560 is all they can afford, that's the end of the matter for now. And those cards are better that what they currently have by a big margin.

And just for giggles and to satisfy my own curiosity, I downloaded and played both of those games on the old GTX560 I own and they played just fine at 1080p with most settings set in the mid range, a few on high, a few low/off. Framerates were 60+.

Would that be a non TI 1gb model of gtx 560?

5-10 eur/usd. I wouldn't pay even that, it's an old card with only DX10 support and it's pretty power hungry. I remember that I got one free from my friend about 5 years ago already, Leadtek 1GB version.

Thats literally a Sapphire branded GPU. Just buy it through a buying agent, it'll not be more than $40 total

TaoBao doesn't take Paypal and buying with a credit card is iffy. Better to buy stateside.
Why would you ever buy from taobao directly? Thats silly. Use a buying agent like Bhiner or Superbuy (Personal favorite) to import and buy for you, with PayPal

Wow. That was before PC's were even a thing. And that kinda of computing was tedious. Would have been faster to do the calculations by hand.. Still it was an advancement in computing technology, but I digress. We're off topic..

Right. Still better than the 250 though..

I dealt with punch tapes before

People, "don't look a gift horse in the mouth". If it's free, it has infinite value.
Nothing is free. There are costs associated with all "free" things.

As with all things, it comes down to the cost/benefit ratio.
