Athlon vs Phenom CPU's

I found in a murky corner 2 AMD Phenom cpu's & wonder if it would be worth the trouble to swap them in 2 older (identical) MSI mobo's that have Athlon cpus now. I have the 'heat goo' etc. I built them 5-6 years ago with XP-64 os. CPU shouldnt affect the os right?
Is it even worth it?
(I have a 3rd 'same' mobo that is bad, I just never tossed it, the Phenom's plug into the cpu socket ok)

What boards and what CPUs are we talking about exactly?

Just because they fit in the socket doesn't meant they are supported by the motherboard.

Even some basic AM2 motherboards can support AM3 CPUs, and most AM2+ support. Just check if your motherboard supports those and update it's bios if needed.

Phenoms have L3 cache, Athlons doesn't have. That gives already a nice boost.

Yes.
CPU's are supported and you'll be better off with the B59's.

Benchmark Scores it sucks even more less now ;)
It's limited to 95W TDP CPU's though according to its manual so anything with an 125W TDP should be ignored as an upgrade path

I'll switch one for now, (C:\ drives are in removable trays, still useable in either comp), see if I notice a difference.

Thanks all, , , , ,

Yeah, probably wouldn't run a hex in that board.
