AMD's Athlon branding is probably the company's longest running one when it comes to its commercial CPU solutions. These join AMD's already-released Athlon 200GE, but offering higher clockspeeds for better overall performance, whilst keeping within the same 35W TDP of their slower, lower-tier sibling.

Both the Athlon 220GE and 240GE keep the 2-core, 4-thread design of the Athlon 200GE, but their clockspeeds have been increased to 3.4 GHz and and 3.5 GHz respectively (the 200GE runs at 3.2 GHz. Pricing, of course, increases as the clockspeed does, and while the Athlon 200GE is a steal at just $55 (with its integrated, 3 compute-units graphics accelerator), the 220GE goes for $65, and the 240GE will be available for $75.

Another open parentheses with no close. I think you all are just doing it to screw with my OCD at this point.

The 200G is now overclockable so these models are pointless.

As far as AMD is concerned, it isn't overclockable, and that bug will be patched out of the next BIOS I'm sure.

That 220GE looks like something my dad would appreciate, and it would probably destroy his Athlon II X4 he currently has. Don't know how the graphics part compares to his HD7770 tho, but considering he only plays hidden object games, it shouldn't be a problem. Pair it with a cheap micro atx board, and then put it all in the smallest case possible.

I'd go with 2200G
it can replace the HD7770 too

The 2200G or 2400G would probably do really well for him. The 2400G can actually handle many games at 720P.

I'm interested on how these compare to the older AM1 Athlons, particularly in multi-threaded load. I don't really see anyone doing that comparison though...

He has a 19" 768p screen so it shouldn't be a problem. And the games he plays are really lowest of ends when it comes to requirements.

I quite like comparisons like that, low end hardware of new and old, showing the progress of uArch, DDR and so on. Unfortunately, rarely anyone does it nowadays.

People often ask “who cares about IGPs?” But for many, it’s all they would ever need. I’m actually quite amazed with what the 2400G can handle, provided you give it some faster RAM. I had actually accidently ran my 2400G in single channel mode (hadn’t seated a RAM stick properly), and it could actually still play Destiny 2. Forza 7 was laggy, and it took me a minute to figure out why!

I can tell you, with a 5150 here, that these Athlons are... a LOT better both in CPU and GPU.

I have an A4-5000 board, which is essentially a 1.5ghz 4C Athlon on single channel. It can handle web and the basics, but streaming 1080p video is its upper limit.

Maybe I can boot it up and run some tests and compare it to my 2400g. I can even disable cores and HT on it with Ryzen Master Utility.

For those CPU's you need both SSD and serious caching software (Primocache). It sits in between the CPU & HDD for example and stores alot of frequent required data in memory. Speeds up any slower CPU. I kind of made 720p possible by youtube on a older laptop of me with a slow-ass HDD.

It will not get patched and even if it was, no one stops you from using previous bios.

Thats the same as having a 9680k 8c/8t overclockable, exactly like the 9700k 8c/8t and cheaper, and saying that 9700k makes sense.

Also as of 22th December every motherboard overclocks these chips. Even hardware unboxed made a video saying these new athlons are pointless.

These will be fine in low-end OEM desktops. Curious if some may surface in mobile form and end up in entry level laptops, too. Might even be possible to passively cool this dual core version like the old Kabini’s.

My dad has a Athlon 200GE and it is more than enough for him. He uses it for general office use and simple 2d games like hidden object games.

Honestly you don't need more and it can hardly 1080p streaming and even older 3d games just fine. The most important part is having a SSD.
