Lorec, for me at least, nothing beats having kids. games are fun, but my perspective changed, kids and raising them and having fun with them and the wife...its what matters to me. when i do play a game, its fun and i can still get lost in it, but its not as often, and i don't feel like i'm missing out on much. just a bonus anymore ;)
I agree in a way! Obviously family comes first! But I feel like I won't be same person when that happens and thats kinda scary. Its not just escaping from responsibility, its along the lines of keeping myself . I mean all things considered, we live and we die. Should I give up all that made me- me? I don't wanna go all feelings in here, but this is scary.
My mother, gave up all for my sake and she turned out to be old and bitter now.
She gave up all her hobbies, do simillar fate awaits me?
I mean its up to me I guess but yeah, the standards...

In my case, and the case of a lot people posting here, the sad part is coming to the realization that the days when you could get sucked into a game world and forget about the world around you, may be behind us.

That's especially true with so many barriers to devoting yourself to dedicate precious time to any given game without having to make sure everything is up to date, drivers, patches, BIOS updates, system updates, the list goes on and on.

I know I'll sound like an old fart right now, but I miss the days when I could create a custom autoexec.bat file in any given game folder, telling the game where to find my sound card based on the port, irq and dma channel, as well as what video mode to use, then save that file and start a game knowing it would just run every time you executed that batch file.

I know games nowadays are infinitely more complex, with AI, ray tracing, wide open worlds and positional audio just to name a few things; heck, just a single texture or AI subroutine in a current game uses as much memory as a full game that would fit in a single floppy disk. And with all that complexity programmers need to make sure everything runs like a fine tuned machine on endless hardware configurations. Times have changed indeed.

I still do lots of casual gaming with the family, and it's fun, I want my kid to grow up the same way I and many of us posting here did, having fond memories of playing with our parents.

When I speak about hardcore gaming, I'm referring to the feeling of immersing in a game and forgetting about everything else. With more responsibilities in life, that feeling is more and more fleeting every day.

A big thank you to everyone who's shared their thoughts on this subject, I now know I'm not alone, and not only that, but the solutions many of you have proposed here, are already helping me find more ways to continue supporting this hobby, I hope I'm not the only one who has found help in this thread.

remember quake 2 and tomb raider games

you click the exe, skip the video, and in some seconds you start shooting things

now you have an unskipable cut-scene of 5 minutes, tutorial of 1 hour, 2 hours to get into action and do repetitive task, games today feels like work, repetitive chores

The times dictate work, with little time for me or games.
Just got a vanilla 1080 havent had time to enjoy it. Except in no mans sky. And that game wants too much time to even enjoy it so i dont go near it. I have been enjoying Black Mesa...
Well back to work. Ugh!!!!

Have a copy of "Doom", may load that up and play it.
I do have SH4 on the machine and just yesterday I was going after a Troop Transport convoy with 6 destroyers trying to take me out - Of course they didn't. Nailed all three escorting Cruisers plus a transport for nice tonnage.

No, not cheating or anything, I've played that one long enough I can more or less do as I want because I understand HOW the game works and like any good sub skipper I take full advantage of what I know. :D

And remember manual saves?
Although there are still games around where you can save manually (Sniper Elite, as an example), it's all checkpoints now, which I've always found to be irritating.
Could be my grumpy disposition though, who knows?

i'll throw my two cents in...

used to game into the night when i was younger (36 currently) now have a family, 5 kids, great wife...i find i enjoy building things with my hands and teaching the kids how to have a usable skill and learning a skill myself at the same time. i like wood working now. still work in IT as my career but being on a computer all day and sitting in chairs most of the day kinda sucks the fun out of coming home and grinding at a pc game and sitting more....still enjoy the city skylines and tropico or dirt series some nights though...

we've been getting really big into board games, its something my wife really enjoys and the kids also enjoy it. i've just changed priorities, got burned out on first person shooters also helped get be out of gaming as much as it seems thats still where the lion share of devs put their focus on.

not really going anywhere with this, i enjoy reading on this forum and tweaking hardware/vm environment here at work, but after hours, i love spending time with family.

*side note* VR, i'm not sure where anyone can really spend that time closed off from the world, it doesn't appeal to me at all. the tech is neat glad others enjoy it, just not my cup of coffee :)

5 kids? Holy molly. You and your wife must have been busy. Build her a Taj Mahal

I love kids too but after two kids my wife told me she is no baby making factory when I said we should have a third. And she is Punjabi, I thought they were used to having lots of kids? Turns out, that was false as Punjabi's have usually 1 to 2 kids max.

Everyone has there own thing. And for the record, as women are the only members of our species that can have children, they are literally baby factories for the human race. Whether or not to have them is personal choice..

I was looking for Ace Combat 7 and found this thread.

Thanks for taking time for sharing.
I appreciate that.

I booted my PC, double clicked on the Battlefield V icon, and was greeted by a message on Origin telling me I couldn't start the game cuz it needs a mandatory patch...
I had that experience with Dragon Age: Inquisition. By the time it was done updating, I've lost my mood for gaming and shut down the PC and went to sleep (it was almost midnight).

This is why I love GOG, even more than Steam.

I can play any game, even when the update or patch or new DLC or anything downloadable is released. I just download all those downloadable contents while keep playing, and once the download is finished, I quit the game, install them and back to gaming in no time.

It's almost similar to what I used to have when I was still playing games with disc check (Patches-Scrolls.de, anyone?)
The difference is now everything is digital. No disc required, just fast internet.

I know it's not like this all the time, and people will probably say this is my fault because I don't keep my games patched up to date, but I do! I made sure everything was patched up last week when this same thing happened!
It's not your fault.

Ever played Pathfinder: Kingmaker?
The developers should change the name to Patchfinder.

There were times when the game was constantly being fixed with a barrage of patches. Good luck trying to find the sweet time where you could play for a few evenings in a row even during your holidays without being interrupted and halted by Steam. And because it's Steam, it wouldn't let you play until you let it patch the game.

One evening, a new patch was issued. The next evening, another patch was issued. The next day after that? Two patches were issued in a single day. Not a patch and a hotfix, but two patches. I was like "Oy, how many times??" For a few days, I spent my time working in the morning and watching the game being patched or updated instead of playing it in the evening. All occupational stresses, no recreational time.

those were the good times

nothing like pressing f5 to quicksabe and f7 f9 to quick load

max payne, tomb raider, quake 2, soldier of fortune, sin, half life

great times

some things i hate these days is wasting time reading guides on graphic settings, sometimes a setting takes 30fps, like advanced blending in dirt, grid games, or cod mw3, just one simple setting, the same for resident evil 7 and 2 remake, and assassin creed odyssey origins, the explanation of the menus is so dumb and they give you a small frame to show the effect lol, like 20x20 pixels, wow, amazing way to check out the graphic settings

finding trainers to cheat (i don't want to be poor in a videogame, i want all stats, all money, all life, etc), and finding mods to enhance graphics, i do that more than gaming itself, yes it is dumb lol

I have thought about it lately and I'm not so sure, to be honest.

Sure, I miss saving... mostly simply because I was used to it.
And I really liked the possibility to "split" gameplay - especially useful in RPG when you decide on class later on.

But on the other hand: I lost so much time playing the same part just to get a better boss drop or better level up.
I wasn't really tracking this until I started using Steam. Some games tell you how much time you've spent in a saved game. So my Fallout and TES saves were saying one thing, but the Steam "time played" was as much as 30% higher...

The only worse thing I can think of was creating characters in D&D games, where you could spend hours (and many did) rolling the ability points. And the games actually encouraged you to do so (you could save a result and keep trying). Fighter in Baldur's Gate was by far the worst - people wasted whole days waiting for 18/00 strength and enough points for everything else.

I used to do the exact same thing. FF8 card system was addictive. I remember the days of spending hours, trading controllers with my sister back and forth playing FF8 (she would help me in the card system since she already mastered it before I did). Only other game I spent so much time in was FF7 just exploring every nook and cranny in the game.

You raised three kids all by yourself? Wow, I tip my hat to you sir! I don’t know how you managed to find time for your kids, work, and hobbies, that’s impressive.

I can relate to you, I had a nasty divorce back in 2013, she had a mental illness and never allowed anyone to help her until the point she turned on me and our kid. It was the worst time of my life, and I was a single dad to my kid for over 4 years until I met my current wife.

I wouldn’t have survived that period of my life without video games, raising my kid, work and games were the only things that kept me going. I can’t believe you had to be a single parent to three kids!

Did playing games help you too during that period? Congrats on raising your kids on your own, that’s an impressive achievement.

I'm 57 and lol forward to skimming home and turning my computer on. Twice a week I have my friends I and we play ghost recon. A couple of us are ex military so we enjoy the old combative make we still have.
Where I do struggle sometimes it's keeping up with the hardware as well as the software. I can build any PC as in hardware but lack in the software skills where that's where I ask you guys for help.

I'd be pretty gutted not playing online. I myself I play at least five times a week.
I'm in Retail so funnily enough it calms me down when I get home.

I have two toddlers and a wife who gives me "the look" every time I say I'm going on the computer after the kids are in bed so I go weeks sometimes not playing a game. Other times I can get an hour in every other night for a few weeks.

I don't have so much interest in modern games any more but i don't think that's age related.
Id happily play swat 4 competitively again but no one else does it.
i have no interest in games where you "rank up" and get a better gun and so on.
I have no interest in football (soccer) games where i'm expected to buy card packs just to possibly get some players i may want.
I find my self playing games like sid mires pirates quite a lot just to waste time, or i fall back to playing new vegas.
I would play some elite dangerous but i dont really have enough space to have my hotas out all the time and the thought of pulling it out setting it up and re configuring the buttons puts me off.
I didn't really enjoy the new doom game. But i did enjoy the Wolfenstein game and i really enjoyed alien isolation..

So i dont think its anything to do with age. I just think AAA games have changed and generally not for the better..

However i have just grabbed resident evil 2 remake. and i will be playing that thoroughly. I was a bit dubious about it given the new engine and style. but i gave the demo a go and found it more than acceptable.

also given that i am married and have 2 young children "one of which has autism" It does affect what i chose to do with my time. (i prefer to spend time with my family) but on the weekend the wife and kids go out shopping and i get a good number of hours of undisturbed pc time.
Also when the kids are in bed i also get some time "the wife tends to go to bed about the same time or a bit latter than the kids"

but even given that i do believe my choices of which games i do play when i have the ability reflect the fact that games just arent what they used to be.

if i use rdr 2 as an example. "my brother has it and i played it some with him on xbox"
"start mission>watch cut scene>ride horse for 6mins>watch cut scene>do a thing>end mission" seems to be how games are these days. Now im not saying rdr2 is bad or anything. but they do seem to put a lot more effort in to cut scenes and story than actual game play mechanics these days.
Again using rdr2 as an example. Hunting a legendary animal is a matter of
"activate magic eyes>follow the trail>fine a thing>magic eyes>follow trail>find a thing>magic eyes>follow trail>find the animal"
Which is rather weak game mechanics given that the game renders animal trails in real time..
Surely it would be a better mechanic for you to find and follow the trail your self given they went to the effort of rendering them..

Any way now im off on a rant about modern games focusing to much on cut scenes gfx and storys rather than game play. And i can also go off on a rant about them not bothering with the story at all, and still failing on the game play front..

perhaps it is age making me cynical. Its probably difficult for me to argue how older games had better game play without using my nostalgia glasses. i mean I genuinely dont know how i would convince any one "including my self" that millipeed or moon patrol had better game play than rdr2 lol.

I think it's the same for everyone.. Maybe it's down to the fact we have phones now that do everything, everyone hardly gets a break to do anything and all this social media has just taken over our lives I feel. There are some great advantages to it, but there are some massive disappointments and disadvantages as well.

I to hardly game and it's not for the sheer want to try either. I have a few things to do at home after working with IT all day, (I love my job but what a pain it can be at times!!) I might have to cook tea (unless the girl friend has already done so) then spend some time with the her watching a film or something (she's pregnant about two weeks to go before D day (so to speak!!)) and then I have a few things I like to do for the forum (the WCG and FAH pies/milestones etc for the day) then I have my daughters diary to do and that can take 5 minutes when I don't talk or look at the screen but otherwise, a few hours..

So I find myself with less and less time to actually game but when I do, it's the updates, it's hassles with things not working straight away but then when I would like to, plug in the Amiga or Mega Drive, click on something and boom.. It's there, I'm up and gaming in 5 seconds not 50 minutes as downloading anything at home is less than quick, yet everyone relies on it so much either for streaming TV/Films/Music/Games, you name it it's there...
I was born in 1980, so had the Spectrum, Commodore 64, Amiga's and such to play around on. Friends had Mega Drives and one had a SNES (Mario Kart...) but wow for me I find gaming has gone down hill somewhat and that's depressing.. Same as some films as well, what the heck is happening to all the re-makes of films?? But that's another story altogether...

Gaming used to be fun, now it's just a ball ache because of updates, Windows 10 or DLC's to actually finish the game.. It's most certainly not what it used to be.... That makes me sad :(
Congratulations on the soon to be kid...
And don't bother buying anything for gaming for at least 2 years...
I built a system with a I5-3570k just before my son was born.... It literally collected dust and then I sold it with about 15 hours on it 2 years later.
