I was interested......very much so, until I discovered, just like a 240GB Crucial BX500 I purchased ($34.99 with promo code), is DRAM-less.

Am not deep into the specs, as this was a first for me.......SSD w/out DRAM? At any rate, this is what one's getting here. Good thing though, being out of $34.99 is a lot better than $118.98 (I upgraded the shipping to two day, only $3 more). Then after my BX500 experience, read reviews, didn't take long, first hit revealed the secret.

It's a surprise to me they guarantee these by 5 years, on the other hand, they can take a loss here & there.

Lesson learned, when shopping for SSD's, it's best to enter the make & model in the Google search box & check reviews. I presume that due to many now moving onto NVMe platforms, the 2.5" SSD is largely yesterday's news. Should I need to purchase another, will go with the latest Samsung 8** Pro, fortunately have a couple still sealed, the 850 with 10 year warranty. a 256 & 512GB version, plus a few used 120-128GB Samsung 840 EVO & Pro, as well as a 120GB 850 EVO. Not that these unused drives were intended as such, purchased MB's with NVMe support & my journey began with the 512GB Samsung 950 Pro almost as soon as released at $309.99. Fortunately, the same size 970 Pro is often $120-130 less & faster than ever.

Please be careful when purchasing 2.5" SSD's, if DRAM-less, don't walk, run. Unless a cheap investment to sell a computer, stay away. I've never has a SSD to fail, since my first 128GB Crucial m4 in 2012, yet won't be the least surprised if the first to do so will be the BX500 purchased on 12/27/2018, why after I read reviews & checked the receipt, purchased a 4 year SquareTrade warranty for just over $7. If the BX500 fails, they'll refund the purchase price & that'll be the end of it. To this day & as a major manufacturer of RAM, I was shocked to discover Crucial pulling off this screwjob.

I got caught with my pants down because I trusted the Crucial name, won't happen again over any SSD.

@Sasqui, thanks for the article at Tom's, having Adblock Plus meant no ads for me!:)

It only reinforced my decision to avoid these drives, although did learn DRAM-less SSD's wasn't a late 2018 concept. Glad that other than NVMe models for last year (other than the BX500), didn't need any other SSD. In fact, didn't truly need that one, just wanted to upgrade a SATA-2 based notebook & didn't want to waste a Samsung 850 Pro on that hardware. The 240GB BX500 was (intended as) an upgrade from what I now know to be a superior 120GB Samsung 850 EVO, which for it's size, benches well, often over 500MB/sec reads & writes on an Intel SATA-3 MB. A bit slower on AMD 970 models.

Unfortunately, the trend has settled in good, since that article was written, there's been several over 120-250GB SSD's in the $32-45 price range. Am sure these are built much the same.

Bottom line, in general, we get what we pay for.:toast:
