8 ports don't cut it anymore. I need a replacement upgrade.
I intend to buy second hand.
I'm looking for something that has around 16 ports (anything over 12, 16 is max I'd ever be able to put in use), has one (or two, but I only need one) SFP+ port, and ideally is PoE capable (PoE is not a hard requirement).
I'd like a passive one if I can help it - it's going to live right next to my wife's desk and I don't feel like being whacked to death yet.

Any tips?

Just look for used D-Link switches, those are the cheapest and the most abundant.
DES-1018P pretty much fits your bill. Can be found used under $80.
If you want cheap smart/managed switch, then try the 1100-series. DGS-1100-26MPP is probably the nearest thing for your needs (no 12-16 port versions w/PoE).

In order to avoid midnight whacking, I recommend disconnecting fans on DGS-1100. I don't think it will get that hot in a typical household environment.
1018P has no fans, I think.

EDIT: forgot to mention that 1018P is 100Base-T, if it matters.

We recently (post storm) upgraded to an 8 Port LAN router and have then old 8 port D-Link switch sitting next to it unused.... rather than hook it up, I'm using my lappie on wireless ... but didn't wanna put it away as the office manager puts electronics on a shelf and the power thingie gets thrown in a box with 22 other poower converters which I have no idea belong to what. I can't fire her cause I married her and then I'd have to support her ... and she'd prolly file for unemployment.

Oh yea, obviously I do want gigabit switch. The SFP+ port(s) are for connection to a NAS.

Now that I think about it, I might just grab the cheapest possible and in future get something that also has 2.5/5/10gbit ports. This relatively new standard is awesome.
