Wired exclusive detailing some of what we can expect for the next Playstation here.

Juiciest bits:
- Zen 2 based CPU;
- Custom Navi GPU;
- Specialized SSD (for super fast load times, example given: Spider-man fast travel 15 sec to 0.8 sec);
- Backwards compatibility with PS4 games
- Custom unit for 3D audio;
- Ray tracing support;
- 8K support.

It's shaping up to be a very interesting console. Personally I wasn't expecting a SSD, but a hybrid drive, purely because of cost. The fact that they say it's a specialized SSD probably means it won't be user replaceable, which is a bit of bummer.

Still no word on pricing, of course, but I'm now more inclined to believe the rumor I read a while back about it going back up to 499. Still pretty cheap considering what you get, especially if they keep the storage space the same as the ongoing models.

I like gaming on PC because of all the extra possibilities, but the fact that I mostly play RPGs and action-adventure games, a lot of those are console ports on PC and the higher cost of hardware have me seriously thinking if rather than upgrade my ageing PC I should just wait for next gen consoles. Anyone else in the same boat? Or excited about the next gen consoles?

EDIT: Added ray tracing and 8k to the juiciest bits.

And Ray Tracing for the masses.

Finally solid next Generation console information direct from AMD which also means next generation games are alsocoming.
Will be interesting to see develop for sure.

Don't forget "8K support". I guess they mean video content, because I doubt that the GPU will be able to render games at such res even in 30fps.

I believe the "specialized SSD" is just marketing hype. Going from 15 sec on an HDD to 0.8 sec with an SSD doesn't sound like it's super duper "specialized" thing.

Now consoles will have Real Time Ray Tracing. I wonder what all the haters of Ray Tracing gonna say?

don't make it 30 fps capped games for the sake of ray tracing is all I have to say, fine if you can sqeeze it in on console at 60 fps 4k, but only after that is attained, then feel free to add ray tracing. just don't make me game at 30 fps or I am 100% staying PC.

Hey, console games had graphical options for some time now. I expect that most of them will have an option between "graphics" and "performance".

ah well I did not know this, I have not had a console since PS2. I was gaming at 1440p 100hz before ps4 even launched.

That would be great, but it would also drive the cost even higher.

Yeah, the 8K support think is probably video only, hence why I didn't mention it. As for the SSD, if you put one in a PS4 you won't get those kinds of improvements. Article even says it'd be about 1/3 faster which would put it around 10 secs. So they're definitely up to some trickery here.

The NVMe drive prices are going way down right now. It is becoming quite affordable. That is probably the SSD being described. Also, PS4 only ran SATAII 3Gb/s speeds, not SATAIII 6Gb/s.

8K support is a given, since its baked into the ability of chips already to support. So....

Nice, wasn't aware of it being SATA II. 1TB NVMe SSD would be insane.

"Specialized SSD" sounds alot like some soft of fast NVME drive for caching. The wording on the leak last week suggested the same. The drive does not have to be big to be effective.

Actually I recall people mentioning using external drive attached via USB which gave them faster loading times.
Definitely room for substantial improvement

Your not getting a 3rd gen ryzen, Samsung SSD, and top tier AMD GPU in that thing. You will get entry level laptop CPU performance, mid tier GPU performance (think AMD 590 performance but far more efficient) and a SSD that puts size and reliability way ahead of performance.

Not bad. Make it 4k60 and back-comp with PS4 (which it'll have by the looks of it) and I'll be getting one for sure.
And as for SSDs, prices have been going down for a while now. Even TPU had a review of an incredibly fast and cheap m.2 pcie drive the other day. And Sony will, of course, be buying those in high quantities, so you know the price will be even lower.

SATA SSDs are still quick enough and wont kill the bank.

Truthfully a 256GB or higher as your main drive as fastest drive. Then your Gaming drive can be slower/cheaper
