Main use of the PC will be home video editing , browsing and general use. Will I be better of with DDR4 2 x 16Gb 2200Mhz or 2 x 8Gb 3000Mhz memory please? Will CL make a great deal of noticeable difference?

you probably wont notice a difference either way, but 32GB is better for future proofing

id go for the faster ram for no other reason than i can, theres not a lot of difference speed wise in a processing rig but who knows it may help in the future. goodluck. charl.

Whether there is a noticeable difference depends a lot on what exactly you do with computer and what software you use. Some production software benefits from fast memory and others do not. Same with games - there are some games that benefit a lot and some that do not benefit at all.

When choosing between less and more memory - more is always better :)

For my personal experience I can tell you that it depends on what you will have to do. If you don’t plan to do video editing like a pro maybe 16 gigs with higher speed for me will help you. 32 are a lot maybe overkill but you can still overclock them to gain speed. If you also want to game with your rig definitely higher speed memory will help you with FPS and no game at this time will use more than 12 gigs. If you have multiple Virtual machines running at the same time 32 gb will help you

Hah! I intended to mention that but forgot by the time of writing the post. Yeah, for Ryzen faster memory will definitely bring an overall performance boost. From 2200 to 3000 would be considerable so prefer speed if you have a Ryzen.

Ryzen or Intel? The former it matters more performance wise, the latter not so much. I'd still go 3000.

About capacity l, that's up to you obviously. Do you use close to 16gb already? If so, go 32gb. If you arent generally close, than 32gb.

What system is this for op?!!!!

This is for Ryzen 2700X, Asus Crosshair VII. Will the CL matter? 14 is obviously too expensive for the budget.

3000 used to be bad multiplier for Ryzen, 3200 would be better. Primary concern would be speed - get 3200. CL-wise gow as low as you want to spend but 16 is OK.

Lower is better, but will you notice? Likely not. Just get some DDR4 3000/3200 sticks that are listed on the motherboard QVL.

You never listed a budget in the first place..... it isn't obvious to us (until just now). :p

Prepared to break the bank for 32Gb (2 x 16) 3200 around £200 ($250ish)

Go 3200 and 16GB two modules if you have Ryzen. You wont regret it. Believe me I know :)
With Intel get the 32GB and call it a day.

Is that true? I need to check with mine and see how will it work when set to 3000MHz.
Even if he goes 3000 he can always OC the memory to match the multiplier. loosen the timings a bit and done. unless you're saying that it may not even boot.

The relative value will depend on the application mix Adobe Premier for example is affected in different ways tha DaVinci... it also depends on the other hardware and for the cost, where you are. It's not as bad as it was originally but AMD builds have more issues than Intel builds. For a long time the breakpoint for RAM was 3000 CAS 15 or 3200 CAS 16 after which it got too expensive. Now it's creeping up to 3466 at least here in USA.

OK guys. So, the opinion seems to be to go for 2 x 16Gb. Will CAS15 / CAS16 be ok rather than splash out for CAS14? Will there be a major difference?

CAS 15 sticks of the size you stated and within your budget of $250 (US).
Can't say how much they would be where you are though. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233871

There is one set of Cas 14 sticks also within your budget (US) but barely. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820232214

Whatever you buy be sure about compatability with your board before paying for them.

There lies the issue. Crosshair website provides a six-month-old list that is not up to date. Only alternative, I guess, is to rely on the memory manufacturers recommendations.

That is a problem you'll have to deal with, it's nothing anyone of us can do anything about.
Just be sure to research things as best as you can and go from there like I had to do myself earlier.

BTW the above is correct - If it's on the list it's good no matter how old the list itself is.
