EA Reveals Next-Generation Hair Rendering for Frostbite

In the gaming industry, everything is evolving around game graphics. GPUs are integrating new technologies such as ray tracing, there are tons of software dedicated to making in-game illustrations look as realistic as possible. Electronic Arts, one of the game publishing companies decided to release a state of the art AAA games, today revealed an update to DICE's Frostbite engine.

DICE's Frostbite engine is powering many of today's AAA titles such as Battlefield V, Anthem and Star Wars Battlefront. Today it got a big update. EA released new capabilities to render the hair of in-game characters with almost real-life realism. This is pretty impressive considering that hair is very difficult to model artificially. Being one of the most interesting topics for game developers, good hair animations are extremely important to achieving the lifelike look newer AAA titles are targeting.

Amazing work those hairs look natural ! Can't imagine where graphics will be in the next 10years especially now that we have raytracing .

I laughed out loud when the camera panned around and showed the blank mannequin face and then it did the awkward flip-kick. I know they're demoing the hair but you couldn't put it on an actual character?

Bad Company 2 wasnt too bad. Im half disappointed they toned down the destruction so much in newer BF games.

EA's game engine developers are top world class programmers.

EA's executive brass utterly destroys their game designer's visions & then litter their games with the maximum amount of micro transactions possible.

It's like running a car with one sport tire and 3 concrete blocks.

Looks good .. but the look is not the problem this previously very good Mantle-capable Engine has.

They have some problems deep in their engine, they will need to get rid of as fast as possible.

I'm still mad about the fact that they haven't released a SDK saying the engine is too complex.

One of the best part of BF2 was the mod community.

Do I care? Not in the slightest because a game shouldn't be so shallow that it matters.

Wouldn't be too surprised if the Frostbyte solution turned out to be a modified TressFX 3.0

Yes, but I believe it to be hairworks only, that is supported only by nVidia cards.
I think that what Frostbyte achieved is renderable by all brands of video cards.

Of course, just pointing out stimpy is correct in assuming such tech has been around for donkeys.

The acid test as always is the performance hit, Tomb Raider only used TressFX on Lara's head and not mulitple NPCs at the same time for example.
