It turns out that the Radeon RX 5500 is arriving a lot sooner than expected, with VideoCardz reporting an October 7th product launch for the card. It's also being reported that the SKU will launch as the Radeon RX 5500 XT, with board partner GIGABYTE being ready with half a dozen custom-design cards, all of which with 8 GB of memory. In a separate report, VideoCardz also confirmed that the RX 5500 series will be based on the latest "Navi" family of GPUs that use the company's latest RDNA architecture, and will be built on the 7 nm silicon fabrication process. What's more, the RX 5500 will reportedly use 8 GB of modern GDDR6 memory across a 128-bit wide memory bus. A WCCFTech report predicts the RX 5500 (XT) will feature 22 RDNA compute units, which works out to 1,408 stream processors.

With these specs, we can see where AMD is going with the RX 5500 (XT). The company wants a viable successor to the Radeon RX 580 or even the RX 590, which it can sell around the $200-250 price-range, competing with a spectrum of NVIDIA GPUs, including the GeForce GTX 1650 and the GTX 1660. The card would target 1080p AAA gaming with high-thru-ultra settings, and 1080p eSports gaming at high refresh-rates. NVIDIA is already preparing a response to the RX 5500 in the form of the GTX 1650 Super and the GTX 1660 Super, which come with beefed up specs.

The problem with releasing a entry level, possibly 149-179$ GPU atm, is that GTX 1660 SUPER leaves things wide open for NVIDIA in the 200-300$ segment. It was non competitive, it stays less competitive.
I really hope that AMD will reveal their 220-280$ entries by the end of this year.

Sorry, but the pricing mentioned in the news post is completely nonsensical. The successor to Polaris and the RX 5xx series is supposed to stay at the same price as their 3-year-old MSRPs - or even increase - for the same performance? Given that RX 570s have been selling for $120-140 and 580s for $140-170 this is pure nonsense. Or if true a massive mistake by AMD.

I really wish the 5800 and 5800 xt were coming first... dangit

ryzen 3800x is on sale for 379 on amazon too plus two free games now... :( but i can't jump on it, i want to buy the whole system at once, all parts i mean, and 5700 xt just isn't powerful enough for my 1440p high refresh needs. i need 120 frames+!!!!!

I think Good Old Gamer summarized well the predicament AMD is in and most probably why they are not releasing the 5800 series.

Basically Ryzen is probably eating up their entire allotment of wafers and is multiple times more profitable than monolithic GPUs.

These low end parts are good for selling cut down dies...

I think those GPUs will have 580-590 lvl of performance for $150. RX5600 will get at Vegas' lvl of performance for $250 and RX5800 will target 2080 and 2080S for $500-600 (non-XT and XT).

makes sense, but I am leaning towards a rtx 2070 super when it comes in stock on nvidias site, since i can oc it hard to net me 10 fps more across the board than stock... making it 20 fps faster than xt across the board since xt doesn't OC well. I just can't wait around forever. I finally nabbed my dream monitor, but my gtx 1070 just can't handle it

They are not in same price range as Polaris cards were when released, i can't call them successors until they cost 180-250€.

Going to take an educated guess that these are dies designed for the 5700 series that didn't bin as well. Since lower cards sell more parts in general it makes sense from a business perspective to "save" the lesser binned parts until they feel like they won't sell out the moment they hit the market.

I honestly do not think there will be a 5600, if AMD wants consistency in their product stack.
The same way their CPUs are x300, x500, x700, x900 -> they seem to be going the fame way with the GPUs.
The supposed RX5800 should be RX5900 too...

So AMD should leave NVIDIA to completely rule the 200-300$ market, is what you're saying? Cuz this one in the title is set to compete against lower range of GPUs.

Wise move by AMD.and I think they can pull it off but nvidia is waiting on the wings with super line up once again.it seems nvidia has a very good inside knowledge of what AMD will release and expected performance with it.

AMD had a naming scheme like this for GPUs back with the R5/7/9 2xx series. Didn't work very well. A linear progression in names is generally easy enough when it comes to GPUs, as performance scales more easily/linearly than in the CPU world. If this was meant to be the first step down from the 5700 it would need to outperform the 1660ti, or match it at a lower price. That isn't likely with these specs.

Well that depends on memory speed. 128bit bus would need 16Gbps memory chips to equal BW of 256bit bus on RX 580/590, so it's very much doable.

So AMD should leave NVIDIA to completely rule the 200-300$ market, is what you're saying? Cuz this one in the title is set to compete against lower range of GPUs.

It's quite in the middle though. These will crush tu117 based products, but they can't really match tu116s. Navi still has to equip more shaders to overcome Turing and tu116 has 192bit bus. Only gtx1660 is in danger because use of gddr5, thus Super with gddr6 is imminent. Nvidia could actually go as crazy as release 1650 Super configured from tu116 as ~1280cc 128bit with gddr6. That would easily beat gtx1060 thus being very close to RX 5500 performance. We might see actual price war and for a long time holiday season 2019 will be interesting for graphics card buyers.

RX 5700 and 5700XT are the successors to Polaris.
In a way - at least in terms of naming - sure, but given the price increase and dramatic performance increase that's a bit difficult to justify. On the other hand I agree that calling something with equal performance a successor is odd too - I was just referring to the news post here. I would expect the 5600 series to be the "true" successors to Polaris, with better performance at a similar MSRP and lower power. The 5700 series is somehow in between being a true Vega successor (Vega was higher end) and a Polaris successor. Ironically while outperforming Vega - but that just makes me hopeful for higher CU count configurations of RDNA.

The price doesn't quite concern me just yet; it would not surprise me at all if AMD is attempting to "jebait" NVIDIA into releasing at similar price points before cutting them off (again) with another $25~50 cost reduction. That would then leave NVIDIA needing to hammer out another SUPER or Ti variant to compete with a possible 5500 XT, if there still is space for one in the product stack.

All I really want from AMD at the moment though is to also announce fully working Navi/RDNA drivers on October 7th alongside the new 5500.

I think you mean people just don't know how to OC Navi. Also...across the board...as in Nvidia shills hiding framerates on YouTube when it runs away lol

AsRock 5700xt was 376 USD last night, too.

They don't have to, Polaris was a code name for a specific architecture and set of die sizes. Whenever a manufacturer makes a "successor" to a chip what they mean is a successor in terms of die size/TDP or some other hardware specification.

Prices are subject to change and are in no way an indicator of what is or isn't supposed to be a successor. For example Nvidia is selling right now a chip under the xx60 name for 400$ when usually that was the price of xx70 parts. So, how does that work ?

Polaris went from mid-range all the way to the lowest end dedicated GPUs. Same will happen here, I don't see the problem, the prices don't have to align. Is it unfortunate ? Yes but that's what they have to do in order to get competitive margins on their products.

I fully expect this GPU to be faster than Polaris. If that is the case and they sell this for around $200. It may become the de facto GPU for new system builders.

I wonder if we might get a low-profile product from AMD this generation? It seems possible on paper, 7nm being a great enabler, but...

If your close to a Microcenter look for Open-Box deals. Reference 5700 XT for as low as $339 or MSI 5700 XT Evoke $382. They usually dont last 3 days before they get scooped up.
