AMD Launches Ryzen 9 3900 and Ryzen 5 3500X Processors

AMD Tuesday expanded its 3rd generation Ryzen desktop processor lineup with two new product additions, the 12-core/24-thread Ryzen 9 3900, and the 6-core/12-thread Ryzen 5 3500X. Both chips are particularly interesting given their naming. The 3900 is a slightly subdued twin of the company's current flagship, the 3900X, with a small amount of clock speed traded off for a huge drop in TDP. This chip ticks at 3.10 GHz with 4.30 GHz boost, compared to 3.80/4.60 GHz frequencies of the 3900X. Its TDP, however, is rated at just 65 W, compared to 105 W of the 3900X. You get 512 KB of dedicated L2 cache per core, and 64 MB of L3 cache.

The Ryzen 5 3500X is another interesting part, in which the "X" makes a world of difference from the Ryzen 5 3500. Whilst the 3500 is a 6-core/6-thread part devoid of SMT, the 3500X is 6-core/12-thread (features SMT), has the same exact 3.60 GHz nominal clocks as the popular Ryzen 5 3600, but a slightly lower 4.10 GHz boost frequency, compared to 4.20 GHz of the 3600. The Ryzen 5 3500X is expected to be marginally cheaper than the 3600, at around $189, and is currently only being offered to OEMs and system integrators in China. The company hasn't finalized pricing for the 3900, yet.

Explains no pricing and also sucks. Would be a good processor for a home server.

I suppose you could always down clock a 3900X or limit voltages etc... But then I suppose you would have to find one first as well....??

3900 OEM for now, 5500 OEM for now. I guess AMD is already having problems with TSMC's manufacturing constrains, so it gives priority where it should give. To OEMs. I wonder if we will see a 3950 also.

The 3900 looks like an interesting chip and it's nice to see a low wattage variant in the lineup.

Only 7 months to go and 4000 series cpu's will be launching! I decided to wait for that, no doubt in my mind they will launch in July or August next year. At this point I might as well wait

You should keep an eye on TSMC's problems with manufacturing capacity or you could end up buying a more expensive 3000 series in 7 months compare with it's pricing today.

If that is the case I will just wait another 14 or 30 months. My gtx 1070 laptop handles everything just fine for now. also I have enough backlog to last me a decade as it is. I am in no rush.

I went from 2500K to 3800X this month. I would have taken 3900X but it was impossible to find. Now that i have 3800X then 3900X is in stock and in store for weeks. Just my luck. I will upgrade to 4900X or 4950X next year as it will be likely the last AM4 compatible CPU. Unless they will do cross socket compatibility for 5000 series and up (you never know with a massive AM4 install base). Ofcourse some features will be unavailable on AM4 and only DDR4 can be used but i don't think that's a bad thing.

Amd's manufacturing node is almost 100% exclusive to AMD so they do not share manufacturing line with Apple, Kirin, Qualcomm etc.

Regrettably, the new six-core chip will not be available outside of the Chinese OEM market.

EDIT: seeing this mentioned in a few places. They also mention it being 6C/6T.

Ali Express has 3500X already for sale for $160. And a youtuber already tested it vs 9400F.

I can see why there is no need for AMD to sell it worldwide since 2600X is on sale for $130 and 3600 for $190. It would stop most gamers from getting the 3600. In China though, most people cannot afford 3600 and would get the 9400F if 3500X didn't exist. And China is by far the biggest PC market for budget gamers. Smart move from a financial and marketing aspect for AMD imho.
