Why would anyone sane buy a two core notebook these days when quad core notebooks cost almost the same?
I have to rephrase: That's not what I see in here in sweden.
Cheapest Core i3: 3000 sek
Cheapest 4C Core i5: 5500 sek

The difference with Ryzen laptops is much smaller tho, 4200/4700 sek.

Maybe I was lucky when I got my old man his laptop, as it was something like 300kr more than some crappy i3 laptop with similar spec and 500kr more than the utterly crap Pentium/Celeron stuff. It's a year and a half ago, so maybe things have changed.

Careful with those statements. Not every market is the same.

Well, maybe I'm incredibly patient compared to others here, I've been using a 15W 2C i5 for the majority of time for years now, and I don't find it crappy.
Granted, I don't do rendering and such on it, but neither would anyone who I'd recommend a 2C to.

I'd recommend 4C to anyone now, as long as the two extra cores doesn't make it cost like 80 % more.

Sure, but with a very small price difference, it simply doesn't make long term sense. I don't know anyone that buys a notebook that they only expect to last six months to a year.
I've had mine for 4.5 years and I'll most likely use it for another six months or more, despite the fact that the hardware feels sluggish.
And before someone suggests getting an SSD or more RAM, it already has a 500GB SSD (had to swap out the Samsung OEM drive, as it slowed down the system even more) and 8GB of RAM with no spare slot.

My i5 5200U is four years now, even though the model turns five. 16 GB RAM and a 1 TB SSD is enough for now.

I'm hesitant into buying hardware in general, as I've learned the hard way that I like hardware A LOT more than software,
so I can never justify most of my purchases as I won't be playing the latest demanding games or render for hours.

Dunno what people are on about, you can't get a quad core laptop for $200 you get a pentium or celeron dual core/atom 4c for that money and that's the price point these will be targeting

AMD better be careful, they will end up with so many marshmellows in the fire they will never decide on which one to eat.. Just like Intel;)

I'd guess the former, they still need the IGP since it's an APU.

Dunno what that means. AMD had at least 9 mobile APU's in the last generation (12 nm), and they have 7 in the next one so far.
That's not a lot..

Agreed on the dual cores... quad cores with SMT/HT should be the minimum by todays standards.
For the entry level segment, not gonna happen yet. Even the new Athlon 3000G runs games surprisingly good and is a good CPU for a cheap everyday usage PC.

Grandma doesn't need a 4c/8t for paying bills and reading the news.

These are aimed at cheap notebooks and mini PCs.

Says me & many others, I barely play games despite my OP hardware. Well no shit they're aimed at cheap notebooks & mini PCs. "rollseyes"

As if you know better than AMD.. :D
Just as hilarious as every time a new GPU is launched. "This successor to the GTX 1060 should cost $150, because I say so."
Or you know nothing about the budget options of the mobile CPU's throughout the years.

15 W 4C CPU's was unheard of until 2017, and still not in any Core i3 laptops. We all know AMD is aiming higher with the new Ryzen 3 starting at 4C4T, but they still need something lower priced than that.

When did I ever say I knew more than AMD & wtf does the GTX 1060 have to do with the subject? Your pathetic comparison is that... Pathetic. But hey, this is TPU, your saltiness will fit right in here.

So you're against cheap notebooks and mini PCs or what?

I'm against accepting dual cores & mediocrity in 2020 but hey, like Chloe Price said, if Grandma can pay her bills on it & watch some youtube vids, I guess there's a market for it.

When people says what the specs, or price, should be, as opposed to what the big brands decides, that's talking like you know better than them, AMD and others.
And yes, such comments are very common when GPU's are launched, it was just another example.
I'm sorry if you got offended, but what do you expect when you tell people what things "should" be? We should pat each on the back and agree on everything? It's just a forum full of people with different opinions, that's all..
It's just that I'm bored to hell with all these comments about what products SHOULD be, I mean what's the point.. it is what it is: A BUDGET CPU NOT WORTH ARGUING ABOUT.

Yeah you may call me or my words pathetic if that makes you feel better..
Cheers.

Yeah, elitism at its best.

We still use dual core CPUs in multiple devices. And we still use chips few times weaker than these Athlons. We'll keep doing that for years to come.
There's just no reason to force an artificial limit and not make a CPU slower than you deem worthy. Performance is not everything. Some products don't need more. Live with it.
And it's a good business as well: dual core will always be cheaper than quad cores (or it'll utilize really bad dies).

Yeah? As I said, my old man noticed a huge difference going from a dual core to quad core i5 notebook and he's in his 80's.
So that argument is quite moot.

It's not about dual cores as such, but they're not suitable for consumer notebooks or PCs any more.
If this was for a media center type PC or a NAS or something else, then it would be fine. However, for a device that's being used on a daily basis, dual core CPUs are in general under powered and will give the user a bad experience.

2c/2t or 2c/4t?
i5 to i5, so 2/4 to 4/8. The previous machine had an SSD as well and the same amount of RAM.
Afaik, there were no 2/2 i5's.

Needing something and noticing a difference isn't really the same thing. ;)
Most people would notice a difference, that doesn't mean they need it.

That's like saying you need that BMW, because you notice the difference compared to a Kia. Yeah, I made a car analogy..

I should have written Raven Ridge. So harvested Raven Ridge dies?
No, the OP says Dali, but I haven't looked it up.

You can get a new laptop for $200? Never seen new laptops that cheap. Not even Chromebooks are that cheap here.

There's a whole bunch of crap under $200  although tbf there are some half decent ones to be had at the higher end of that when you take into account the cost /performance ratio
