Microsoft's Windows 7 Reaches End-Of-Life

Today, on January the 14th, Microsoft is officially ending support for Windows 7 operating system. After more than 10 years since its launch, Windows 7 has remained a primary operating system on many PCs, especially OEM PCs manufactured before 2015, when Windows 10 came out. The user transition from Windows 7 to Windows 10 has not been an easy task for Microsoft, however, by declaring that the product has reached End-Of-Life, Microsoft is trying to make millions of users pull the trigger and embrace the new operating system.

When January 14th arrives, Microsoft will stop giving Windows 7 users technical support, software updates with new features, and most importantly security updates. The official recommendation from Microsoft is to upgrade to the latest version of Windows, meaning Windows 10. As some of the older PCs may have compatibility issues with newer OS, it is also recommended to check your PC specifications. If you are a customer of the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, you will continue to see further support in the future, however, for regular users, the support period is over.

I just recently upgraded an in-law's PC to 10 from 7, using the media creation tool.... Surprisingly, Windows stayed activated. Used the 'keep everything' option. FFS, it took an eternity on an old spinning disk, dual core Phenom, with 4 gigs of RAM. But it worked and stayed activated. Hundred bucks saved!

Initially I wad skeptical of Win 10 and held on to it with my 4770K based PC. Recently with Ryzen upgrade I had to upgrade to Win 10 and dont really mind the OS apart from few quirks with UI.

10 will activate with a valid 7/8/8.1 key. Had no problems activating it with old MSDN key.

I held on to Windows 7 on my gaming rig and laptop for a couple of years because I believed Win 10 was released with too many issues that needed to be sorted through but now my gaming rig and laptop have been on Win 10 for about 3 years and this weekend I'm going to install Win 10 on my backup rig since I use it sometimes on the net. Time to put Windows 7 to rest.

It was hard for me to let go of XP as well after using it for so many years but life moves on and Win 10 is the future if MS really doesn't release any more OS's

Good riddance, it was a great OS but Windows 10 cleans its clock. Any time I have to work on a Win7 PC I feel like my life and time is being taken away by how slow it is, (same hardware and everything else being equal)

I tested one game that is win 10 only, but it works on win 7.

GAME: "Close To The Sun". ..But i'm stuck at chapter 8. can't get pass the monster that chasing me.

only the ltsc version of 10 is worth something ....i still install 7 on laptops as many people had difficulties with the horrible interface of common 10...

I don't understand how people are still struggling with the Win10 interface. It hasn't changed that much from 7, and for those that really have a hard time learning there is Openshell.

If my 65 year old computer illiterate relatives can do it, anyone can.

it is just an excuse to not learn. close minded people

My 7 year old can navigate it.
My parents in there 60s moved to it and didn't have a moment of issues. Just hit the ground running.

They won't, meanwhile they are enjoying a nearly flawless track record of the largest OS on the planet, that has provided them with support for over a decade and they probably never even paid for it, even the license is a maybe.

I also don't think people realize what sort of gold mine MS is sitting on with Windows. The amount of work they've put into that is nearly impossible to match and the end result is an OS with tremendous versatility and featureset. I wonder if we ever get rid of it ever. On top of this I like the stance MS is taking towards us lowly customers. They simply moved their business model to cloud and left the OS intact and even keep developing it. All these years MS makes the money off enterprise, and all these years we still get what we get. I can't think of a better position a megacorp should take.

Exactly. I can understand with Windows 8 when they completely removed the Start button, but it's been back since 8.1 and the Start menu(instead of the annoying start screen) has been back since Windows 10. And the Windows 10 Start menu isn't even that terribly different from the Windows 7 one. Yeah, things have moved around, but it's all very obvious, it isn't like they hid stuff.

Sure, you can say they got rid of the direct link to Control Panel and instead take you to Settings. However, how often are people that are struggling to learn Windows 10 really going into Control Panel anyway? The answer should be never, because they don't know what they are doing.

I for one will not give up on Windows 7. I shall continue to use it for as long as possible - updates or no updates.
