Resident Evil 3 is Capcom's upcoming third-person survival horror video game featuring vastly improved graphics. Jill Valentine has received a long overdue upgrade and is now looking hotter than even Lara Croft. We compare both supported APIs, DirectX 11 and DirectX 12, on all recent graphics cards, at 1080p Full HD, 1440p, and 4K.

How is it possible, as a major game studio, and one that has to implement low level APIs on consoles to get good performance, to release a PC game that is slower with DX12. What's even the point of supporting DX12 if it's not faster? I guess if you have a really bad processor paired with a decent GPU, then it would help in some circumstances.

Looks like the 2070 Super is beating the 1080 Ti in most everything nowadays. Must be that INT+FP special sauce.

Looks like the game is optimised to run well on the Vega 20.
Only around 20-25% performance difference with the RTX 2080 Ti.

I'm not certain it's optimized, clearly looking at a 2080 8GB / 2070 8GB versus a Radeon VII 16 GB, you really aren't outpacing those two cards even with double the VRAM. This doesn't make sense for a game that is optimized for the card.

Obviously it features a VRAM-saving limit up to 8 GB max.
It has Vega shaders optimisations, otherwise it won't run so well compared to the other cards and other games.

I was speaking about the specific card, and not as much the architecture. I am impressed with the performance on the Radeon VII.

If the VRAM isn't being maxxed out it doesn't matter how much VRAM there is on the card, VRAM usage tops out at 7.8 GB, so in this case the remaining 8 GB on the VII is wasted.

i.o.w, it's like 4 cars driving down a 4 lane highway vs 8+ lane highway, the cars aren't going to get their destination sooner. Double the number of cars, the cars on the 8-lane highway aren't going to even notice the but the cars on the 4 lane and going to be slower.

True but the VII is a card that requires the right workloads to be worth price and power draw.

The 5700XT is a better gaming card even if its slower.

This game like the previous one runs well on most cards, I wish it was more the norm than a case by case basis.

Between an RX 5700 XT and the Radeon VII 16GB I will take the Radeon VII any day.

This is as fine as it will get...they arent tweaking on that any longer. RDNA2 is a game changer for them.

I'd hope to have moved on to a budget level card released in 2025 (which is likely to be faster than these) to hang on to either non ray tracing card by then anyway.

Actually I feel the reason why the RTX 2070 Super is faster is because Nvidia generally don't care much about the older gen GPU when it comes to optimization/ new features. If any driver optimizations, it will only be for the latest. The older GPUs will only get some driver attention when something is breaking.

More VRAM does not equate to faster performance. Games created for Windows need to account for an ultra wide variety of configurations. Developers will not customize games to cater for 16GB of VRAM, when most people will be running graphic cards with 6GB and 8GB VRAM. There are very rare instances of games taking up more than 8GB of VRAM so far.

since there is dx11 and dx12 benchmarks, is there any difference since there is some decrease in fps between the 2
E.g graphics quality, 0.1% lows, stutters when using dx12? etc etc. Just looking at average fps doesn't tell a whole lot

dx12 was supposed to be the windows 10 upgrade incentive for gamers (who were lectured over its clear and highly overall performance metrics improvement over 11) but here we are in 2020 and its looking more and more like m$ propaganda that works questionably better in some cases but just doesn't in nearly all

Tbf, Jill's a total edgelord twat in the demo, triggered by the most benign conversation. To make things awkward the angst rolls off the NPCs as if she had completely different dialogue and it was changed to make her more edgy but devs only did half the job and didn't rewrite the NPC. A complete 180 from her previous calm, collected personality. Just irks me to no end as this was my favorite and the first RE game that I played from beginning to completion.

I believe one of the key point in DX12 was Asynchronous compute which should improve performance drastically. I mentioned "was" because I am not seeing the benefits of late. The feature is still there, but because of the limited hardware to support it (since Nvidia's market share is significantly more than AMD), there is little reason to do any software/ game optimizations for the minority that supports this feature. Now DX12 is relegated to some improvements in eye candy features not found on DX11.
