Western Digital Announces WD Purple QD101 Ultra Endurance microSDXC Cards

Western Digital on Tuesday (27/04) announced availability of its WD Purple QD101 line of ultra-endurance microSDXC cards for use as internal storage in surveillance devices, such as smart security cameras. The card implements 96-layer 3D TLC NAND flash memory, is capable of 500 P/E cycles, and 256 TBW for its top of the line 512 GB variant. The card is particularly useful as a failsafe storage device for cameras in case their link to the NVR server is severed, and is rated for 24x7 operation. The card comes in capacities of 32 GB, 64 GB, 128 GB, 256 GB, and 512 GB. The card is now shipping to NVR and smart camera manufacturers.

Quite mediocre endurance ratings in my book. 8Mpix cam that stream in h.265 can chew through 512GB in 3 days. With 500 P/E per cell that is approx. 1 year of life with continous 24/7 recording.

No wear-leveleing can help when the entire card is being written over and over again.

Also, no word on the S.M.A.R.T. capabilities and the environmental specs? Some of my cams easily reach 60C in the summer and -30C in the winter.

Dont worry, WD will quitely release the same the same model with QLC 4 month later without any indication.

That's gotta be a typo. 500?!? That's it? If true, that is unacceptable. Are we sure that's not supposed to be 5000?

That SMR thing regarding their hard drives only causes them to be (potentially) a bit slower, and causes issues in RAID in some circumstances.
I don't think it reduces lifetime or does it? And replacing TLC with QLC or worse would in fact cause a reduced lifetime
So if you are snarky in connection with that SMR afair you are only half right, half in the sense that they sneak in stuff.
Mind you now ALL other HD manufacturers admitted they did the same regarding sneaking in SMR., so it might be unfair to single WD out in that regard.
