Nintendo Switch Sales Surge Surpassing SNES, N64, GameCube & Wii U

Sales of Nintendo's hybrid console the Nintendo Switch have surged with combined sales of 55.77 million units worldwide. The Nintendo Switch family of systems which includes the Nintendo Switch & Nintendo Switch Lite sold 21.03 million units last year which reflects a 24.0% increase in sales from the previous year, this was likely due in part to the launch of the Switch Lite and the recent demand from the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Software sales saw an even more impressive jump of 42.3% over the previous year with 168.72 million units sold this year which brings lifetime software sales for the Nintendo Switch to 356.24 million units. Animal Crossing: New Horizons along with other best-selling games all saw strong success. These numbers put the Nintendo Switch ahead of the failed Wii U, GameCube, Nintendo 64, and SNES. The switch is also quickly approaching the NES and will probably take its spot to become the second best-selling home console Nintendo has ever produced right after the original Wii.

If this is a piece of junk, I am not sure why the stats are not in line with your remarks?

FYI, a good game does not need flashy ray tracing, super shiny graphics. The definition of a good game is you or everyone playing it have fun with it, and fun has nothing to do with graphics. In addition, can you play any game on your flashy PC/ Xbox/ PS on the go?

That kinda defines the last console gen for MS and Sony rather than Nintendo if you ask me. Its the whole reason they had to release heavily spec upgraded versions of it rather quickly, and initial sales were pretty weak.

Nintendo is not even part of that rat race, for their own, good reasons and that is why they sell. I'd rather say the usual console crowd jumping from one PS or Xbox to the next is the true casual here. They want their yearly FiFA and CoD, mindlessly droning from one release to the next. And most of it is also available on PC, go figure.

So, no. If you buy a Nintendo console you know EXACTLY what you're looking for and you know Nintendo has it. Their game portfolio is unique, the device itself is unique.

PS4 user spotted.
PS4 user here and I have nothing against switch. I'd probably be happy with Lite model if I had to travel more.
As long as games are fun I don't mind playing them on any platform.

My favorite Nintendo console was SNES. Maybe it's because I have so many good memories with that model. Considering the games on any Nintendo console, these are unique. For all the Play Stations and Xboxes, Nintendo is the one of a kind in games it gives so much fun and something special to customers. At least that is my opinion.
Never owned a switch though but played a bit and it is really great. considering PS vitae or portable Nintendo switch is way ahead in game-play.

Same here, after all these years.
Actually it still is. Don't know why I've used a past tense. A lot of great memories with it and I have an emulator and sometimes I play Snes games from time to time :)

I can agree to that, but only if the second place is for the PSone.

I was going to say Nintendo64 is the second :) Zelda Ocarina of Time is the best game I've ever played aside with Legend of Zelda Link to the Past from SNES.

For me, the NES comes second with the TurboDuo a very close third and the N64 is in my top ten. I was never a fan of the PS1. There were only a handful of games I enjoyed. For me, the PS2 ranks much higher.
Edit; It should be noted, the Switch is my number 5.

Although I find the title of this news true yet not proportional to how used to be and now, the population today is much higher than when Nintendo launched SNES and N64. However nowadays PC games are a step ahead x consoles, back in the 1990's consoles were a step ahead x PC. I find no reason to have a console in this time and age unless you like some exclusive title that only Nintendo, Microsoft or Sony releases for their consoles, most games are launched for PC nowadays whereas in 1990's were not, so to have a console 30 years ago was a must have, nowadays no.

Well Switch is a bit different because it's handheld. I wouldn't count gaming laptops on same category and gaming with mobile phones is retarded.

I like to think this is mostly due to animal crossing, which I seriously want to play, but the switch is non-existent in stores. Frustrating but oh well. By the time they’re back in stock I’ll probably be over it and save myself the $300 lol

That's still a sad metric. Early consoles were very expensive for the time and not that many had them. Think 80s and 90s working class families. Parents were not gonna drop 400 for a game machine. Now, the brats just cry till mommy brings one home. Also, world pop was nearly 4 bil less with terrible economic conditions in many countries.

Anything past the PS2 was a waste of time. Games went to crap and the hardware sucked.

Wake me up when nintendo isn't using chips literally from the waste storage container.

We have two. I almost NEVER play it handheld, always on the TV. Going to move a dock to my PC monitor one of these days, and finally finish the BoTW Expansion.

IF they (which it's getting late now) ever released a "Pro" version I would have snapped it up in a heartbeat and paid double for it.

Better battery.
Better Screen. (larger, faster, thinner bezel)
More storage memory onboard.
Game slots on the dock.
Proper D-pad.
etc
etc

Yeah... PS1 never did grab me either. PS2 on the other hand, wow.

N64 is also very high up there for me, along with the SNES. NES was alright.. but before my time by a couple years. My first ever gaming device was a SNES :) Super Mario World. I think my life got destroyed then and there.
