why is my cpu running at 100 % when there is nothing running?

How are you checking this ?

Is it just the System Idle Process that is at or near 100% ?

Right click the task bar and then click Task Manager, then click the Processes tab.
Whick program(s) in that list show high % for usage ?

this was happening when i was downloading bf2 patch from the internet.and stayed like that, so i had to reboot.i checked this on the performance tab

Was it fixed when you rebooted?? And if it's explorer.exe that's running at 100% it might be a virus. Although it probably isn't a virus. It never is. But maybe this time? Maybe not? Just check to make sure.

tes ...it did correct after i rebooted, i also noticed it did the same thing when i was installing BF2.

Then it might just have been one of windows' scheduled uncontrollable crashes of explorer?

i think you were right..i notice that a Win system 32 prog was have a problem. seems to be ok now.

What was/is the EXACT name of the process that was causing you problems ? You don't really want it to be called Winsystem32

To name just a few. Get that process identified on your system just to be sure !
