Smartphone giant Xiaomi is under aggressive expansion ever since its consumer electronics portfolio took off in 2017, with the debut of its Mi TV line of affordable smart TVs. The company is now reportedly turning its attention to the desktop PC monitor market, Shortly after its April announcement of the Mi Display 1A , the company is planning a product under its Redmi brand that rewrote the rules of "bang for the buck" in the smartphones market.

Big things have small beginnings, the Redmi Monitor 1A will be a cost-cut version of the Mi Display 1A. The monitor will offer a 23.5-inch display panel with thin bezels on three sides, likely Full HD resolution, 178°/178° viewing angles, 250 cd/m² brightness, and 60 Hz refresh-rate. Uninterested? Wait till you hear what Xiaomi is reportedly asking for this thing: USD $86. That's it. The Mi Display 1A under Xiaomi's main brand goes for $99. If these two pick up traction, even in China, Xiaomi has the guts to pull off extraordinary value propositions (think a 28-inch 4K IPS monitor under $250), spelling trouble for current monitor makers. Xiaomi plans to announce the Redmi Monitor 1A along with several other consumer electronics products tomorrow (May 26).

250$ for 27-4K IPS seems like a logical next step rather than something extraordinary. I already happen to have a 320$ 4K IPS from AOC (U2790PQU) and it's perfectly fine. Definitely on par Dell's P-series that I had before as far as I'm concerned and miles ahead of what Philips and Acer had to offer at around this price in 27-4K world before.

This 4k AOC 28" screen is only $233 in Taiwan, although no mention of the panel, but claims to be 10-bit so...
Edit: It's TN, so maybe it doesn't quite count.

This one is IPS for sure, 27" and $216.

And they also have an $80, admittedly 22" model, but even so.

I don't get what the big deal here is, apart from it being Xiaomi/Redmi which tends to be kinda crappy, at least judging by their other consumer electronics that I've seen for sale.

Tell me that's an actual 8-bit panel and not the usual 6-bit+FRC and I'm sold.

Looks like the OP is updated with sub $100 prices. That would be amazing if I just want something that works.
But then the Redmi line can be a crap shoot. At least some products under that brand is literally Xaomi visiting Foxconn or some other OEM and say "I'll pay you this much for a product with this exterior design and these internal specs, don't care what turd you stick inside to meet these specs, as long as they look ok when they are shipped."

That's hella cheap. Good choice for gamers as a secondary display.

That's pretty cool. I bought my 4K Samsung for a little under $400 and I thought it was cheap.
While a sub-$100 FHD TN monitor is nothing to write home about, that 4K IPS at $250 is definitely a worthy replacement for your typical workplace boring panels.

I doubt that, a lot of the offshoot projects from Xiaomi are passable at best & well generally what Flanker described.

That's not happening unless they can get a decent panel at these ridiculous prices, one possibility is 6bit+FRC otherwise true 8bit (or better) displays will cost a pretty penny. The only way they can pull this off is if they sell it at a loss & recoup some of that through incessant ads, much like their Redmi phones :ohwell:

And why not? There are already sub-$300 panels that fit the bill with decent but cheap 8-bit IPS panels, and now with OLED competition on the high-end and 4K becoming a mainstream norm - it's inevitable.

Also not true, since you get "incessant ads" on all android phones, and Redmi in particular is no different than any other cheap smartphone. They save money on build materials and overall simplification of the device. It's not Umidigi, where you used to get a phone pre-infected with actual malware right from the factory.

You're talking native 4k IPS (true) 8bit monitors, care to link a decent one?

Yeah that's not true either, MIUI on Redmi phones default to showing ads pretty much everywhere. Where do you see this behavior among other major phones or UI?
Such as, any names? Admittedly I don't own too many phones from various brands but from the major manufacturers I know Xiaomi Redmi has arguably the worst reputation among them.

I didn't mean to play games on it but rather, have it as a secondary display for twitch, yt, a website with walkthroughs or just watching/listening a sports stream while playing something on the main display. And for those scenarios an $80 IPS is a great buy.
I used to do that all the time on my Alienware before I sold the 24" Acer. Had the acer as a main display and had the laptop on the side as a secondary. Watched F1 free practices while playing Grim Dawn, PoE and simillar stuff. Had metroidvania maps on it for the games I was playing etc.
Don't need some insane quality, as long as it's not TN so you dont have to deal with viewing angle issues.

I'd say even with IPS a decent quality panel is paramount, yes if it's something needed as a backup or preferably only as a backup than most el cheapo IPS panels will qualify but as far as I'm concerned I'd give preference to quality (IPS) panels even in this range.
Same here :toast:

LG 24UD58-B is a good example. Currently on sale in my local store at $270 with a regular price of $299.
Philips E-line also comes to mind, though it's mostly sold-out in my area. It was my alternative choice before pulling a trigger on Samsung U24E590D (which also at one point fell under $320 before being replaced by newer QLED verisons).
And I haven't even touched the off-brand stuff, like american Sceptre and some other rebranded stuff (e.g. chinese monitors built on LG IPS panels, or korean monitors based off Samsung PLS panels).

This is what I want too my friend, and I want glass instead of matte, as it makes the colors pop even more / less eye strain. Sadly no one does glass monitors anymore :( those were the glory days

I do not like mirrors, i do not enjoy seeing myself while playing amnesia dark descent and seeing my face on screen, it boosts horror value to 200%. :D
Nowadays you can find glossy screens mainly in laptops.

if there is no other light in your room and its late at night there is no reflect, also if you view the monitor at an angle and nothing is in the background there is nothing to see really. as many monitors as they make now i dont see why they can make limited runs of glass ones too but eh

I've been using glossy laptop for few months because at that time i didn't have much choice but since very few first hours i claimed i will never use glossy screen anymore, ever.
