Hi, My son got this card fitted to a computer he bought and it started giving him trouble..so he got a different card and I took the GTX980 of him, but I am having the same trouble as he got...switching off (black screen, desk top graphics went weird also and computer would lock up). I tried updating drivers but same problem, ran ok for about 6 hours then..black screen.
I have seen that alot of guys were having the same problem as me and a lot of recommendation were offered to them to try but I didn't see one sure fix, so I thought I would asked here.
Thanks for any help, before I just give up and remove card...abd revert back to my AMD radeon onboard .
I don't game but would like to sort the GTX98O on my comp.
Cheers

Is the card getting hot?
Replace the thermal compound on it and see if it helps.
My 290x was crashing before I replaced the compound on it now its working fine.

Whats the make and model of the power supply? not all power supplies are created equal and not just as in wattage output rating

Did your son have the GPU from new? A 980 is not yesterday hardware. Given the rigtht abuse it could be dying.

I have a GTX 580 that does some of these things. It had spent many years in service. I had a GTX 295 that did the exact same thing before it died. Could be on the way out but not quite ready to go yet.

Before looking at the more esoteris problems / solutions, lets try the obvious common ones ...

1. Did you uninstall the old ATI drivers before installing the nVidia card ? When new card was installed, did you:

a) Uninstall all ATI drivers and associated utilities for old card
b) Shut down and remove old ATI card
c) Boot to windows
d) Use registry cleaner to find and remove all GFX related registry entries related to nVidia / ATI GFX. Be careful to remove ONLY GFX card related items
e) Shut down and install new card
f) Reboot and install new drivers.

While the process isn't always this complicated, it is sometimes necessary especially if you installed the new nVidia card w/o 1st having removed the old. Try this 1st.

2, When the system locks up or crashes, a message is recorded in the windows system event log: Have you been doing the following:

a) Recording the time of the problem
b) Looking in Event Viewer and examining the Windows System Log, specifically at the time immediately before the problem occurred. Problems are easily identified by Red Error icons or Tellow Warning icons.
c) reading the description and then doing a web search on the text in the message.

3. Is the card overheating ? have you .... ?

a) Used a GFX card monitoring program (i.e. MSI Afterburner) to look at card temps, voltages etc.
b) Used a System monitoring program (i.e. HWiNFO) to look at card temps, voltages etc.

4. Your system specs say you have a Bitfenix Whisper M series 550W Plus , it comes with:

2 x 6+2pin PCI-E 2.0 connectors for multi-GPU Support

The GTX 980 wants a 500 watt minimum PSU

GeForce 980 - On your average system the card requires you to have a 500 Watt power supply unit. If you are going to overclock your GPU or processor, then we do recommend you purchase something with some more stamina.

Do you have both the 6 pin and an 8 pin PCI-E power cable from the PSU **securely** connected to the card ? You should have the 6+2 cable in the 8 pin connector and the 6 pin in the 6 pin connector with the +2 part left hanging. Also make sure the modular cable(s) is/are also securely connected at the PSU end. Would be worth pulling the cables and making sure the connectors are clean and has no loose pins.

Personally, I wouldn't use less than a 620 watter on a budget build

The power supply looks to be a really good one and reviews are pretty positive. The only thing i can suggest is swap cards with another working machine just to confirm that its the card thats faulty and not anything else. If the system with the 980 starts to have problems you know the 980 is on its way out. If the original machine is having problems then its probably the motherboard or ram...

Just curious what setup is your son running? Because the black screens reminds me of a second gen ryzen machine that i was putting together that didnt like the ram i was using so was causing all sorts of trouble -- its well documented how fussy second gen ryzen is with memory.

I also suggest testing out different ram as well. Dont enable XMP mode either. set all speeds manually in the bios if you have to.

Even better if you go to your board partners website and check out their memory QVL list and see if your ram is listed in there.

I didn’t think about the psu. I forgot people really buy 500w units. Regular loads of 250-300w are common for my 980. Run something like furmark and you will exceed the capacity of a 550w psu with ease.

Sounds more like a memory issue on the card.
A Thermal Pad change might help, but generally once on the way out it will die.

i had a gtx980 that would do what you are describing. it was a boost problem with the card. it was an evga gtx980 super clock. they where notorious for boosting to high without giving enough voltage and would crash. downgraded the bios to a non superclock version and solved the problem. sold the card a year ago and the new owner has not had a problem sense.

GTX 980 is a 165W card. Unless you've modded the bios and power limits, no way. :)

Furmark will hit the limit too.

desk top graphics going weird and black screen..wasn't gamming
