I doubt it. Intel's IPC is very far ahead, and memory-latency is always going to be hampered given AMD's architecture. With Intel's Icelake improving IPC (and finally moving to 10nm), I think Intel is moving faster than AMD can catch up.

AMD has the advantage of a large L3 cache. I think as long as AMD is "close enough" to Intel, the extra cores make more sense for the general purpose customer (since those extra cores mean big wins in Server, 3d modeling, video editing, and other harder compute problems).

I don't think the AMD chip needs to be the best at everything, it should be the best at what it is best at, and just "keep pace" with the Intel chips with regards to single-threaded performance.

The XBox Series X / PS5 marketing slides have been pretty nice for RDNA2 so far. The question is how much of that translates to the desktop graphics cards. Raytracing + VRS seem to be big features worth hyping (even if NVidia had them on Turing already).
.

Actually Amd IPC is higher.

Going by the leaked review results, the 3080 is 'only' 30% faster than the 2080 Ti. A world away from the 70%+ numbers disseminated by Digital Foundry's questionable benchmarks.

So I fully expect an RDNA2 card faster than that, the rumour was 40%+ faster than the 2080 Ti. 3090 out of reach but not by a large margin.

On average the 2080Ti was only 35% faster than the 5700XT. Thats within the improvement range of RDNA 2.

If AMD can match a 2080ti while being price competitive with the new cards, they'll sell a bucketload. They dont need the #1 spot, they need to be price competitive with everything else.

That's 1080P, might as well point out the 5700XT was only 5% faster than a 2060 Super. You need to go a higher res where the more powerful card can stretch it's legs.

Hmm, 5700XT was 40 CUs. Rumor is 80 CUs for "Big Navi".

GPUs don't scale perfectly with the number of compute units (much like a 16-core CPU isn't necessarily 2x faster than a 8-core CPU). But going from 40CUs -> 80CUs could very well give the 50% boost needed to overtake 2080 Ti.

3070 is "slightly above 2080 Ti" speeds at $500. So Big Navi at $500-ish is probably a fine top-end for me personally. I'm not really going to spend much more than $500 on a GPU.

Notice they dont show benchmarks for the 3070, because its like 2% faster. Lol!

Well thats because of the VRAM. We all know at 4k that matters.

naah, i do re-search alot incoming rdna2 gpu and rx 5700 series and rtx 200 series and little rtx 3000 series.... i eman compare and verying tech and performance and so on...it simple...
and i cant see any chnage amd to beat nvidia gpus..not even maybe rtx 2080 ti Oc gpus, and specially not example rtx 3080 gpu

its just impossible for amd,
its same old 7nm process tech,rdna2 is atill inside rdna1 what ever amd or any1 say.

1st i want say put hardest point table and it is that rtx 3090 is over 2 times faster than top oc rx 5700 xt gpu,so even amd double rx 5700 xt tmus and rops, not help, not even close.

2nd, rtx 3080 is also too much rdna2...bcoz i calculate that nvidia put so much power it ,rtx 3080 gpu, even its made 8nm process tech, so nvidia make sure it.. with 8nm process tech gpu, still its tgp is over 300W, little high heard... but these days gpus are so powerfull that 250W broke now.. cant help, even 8nm or amds 7nm tech not help anymore.
and when i mean gpus are powerfull i mean ofcoz rtx 2080 ti gpu... its about 35% faster than rx 5700 xt...

same truth is also amd way, meaning when rx 5700 xt tdp is 225W but it top oc AIB version are near 300w, it not have alot potential anymore, none i mean its not that simple...double tmus and rops and wow..noway.
power consumer are raising unpossible, skhigh, over 400W and also RT support eat more power.

amd loose clear rtx 3000 series, amd know it so they build now new gpu already......but so nvidia.

rtx 3000 vs rdna1 1-0

nvidia is leading so long gpu performance sector and can say overlord way, that amd just cant break it suddenly,no with 'old' way optimazed rdna1 to rdna2.

well, let see 1st september 14 day and we see rtx 3000 series performance and then let amd show it rdna2 performance october 28...
dunno where amd need 7 week, im sure they know now for sure if they can battle against rtx 3000 series or not...looks amd put and fans waiting.. reason why?

erhh, hard salt guess : rdna2 = radeon viii with RT support and watercooling...hmm, i cant belive it...noo, not these days 2020...and reference gpu...well amd do it bfore....

hehe, some1 says performance graphics and say that rtx 2080 ti is ONLY 35% faster than rx 5700 xt....erhh its alot! huge different...dont you see power consumer.. its almost same..

over1/3 faster...think man.

1- The process is an more advanced version of the 7n process
2- Samsungs 8nm is no match for TSMCs 7nm process
3-The architecteral changes makes up most of the 50% performance per watt uplift
4-They confirmed higher clocks and 7% IPC gain
5- Its gonna have 16GB of memory
6-At the most the 2080Ti is 45% faster than the 5700XT at 40CUs and thats 4k with better bandwidth
7- I heard today RDNA 2 will have 128mb cache onboard
8-50% uplift for Amd RDNA1 over GCN translated to 45%-60% better performance, now add that to RDNA 1 for RDNA 2
9- A 3090 will be in small quantities and is overpriced.

The numbers add up. Think about it, Nvidia drop their price and increased their power because they know whats coming.
I tell you what check out this video if you are not convinced.

No love for Polaris?
Well, Polaris got fucked up in all that mining crysis during its time. So Polaris could have been a good thing, but only if it had been much cheaper like it was originally planned.

If AMD crushes it on rasterization with RDNA2 that's all the convincing I need to be more swayed that direction. I'm interested in Zen3 in either case more right now as I'm more in need of a CPU upgrade.

Very accurate point and the developer situation for the PS/Xbox on the next generation consoles is good for AMD and consumers as well. We'll see how it goes with RDNA2, but really hope AMD has a few unexpected surprises. If it can manage to win at rasterization, price, and efficiency that's enough and it doesn't have unseat the #1 card Nvidia releases either it just has to be competitive on value.

Literally I don't know if amd makes any peny from console segment... amd cpu, gpu and all that starting from 299 up to 500 euro... what the hell...

It's a large volume deal, so the margins are small. But AMD is making money on these, Sony and Microsoft probably aren't.

Exactly. Sony & Microsoft make money from games - especially from the online only consoles. The console is simply a platform for selling the games.
