In a recent video accidentally published on the Facebook Blueprint developer site and officially confirmed by the vice president of Facebook Labs details all the new features and changes found on the Oculus Quest 2. The leak confirms many of the existing rumors about the upcoming headset which is set to be announced later this week at Facebook Connect. The Oculus Quest 2 will feature the Snapdragon XR2 processor which has been specifically designed for AR/VR devices and should provide a significant performance increase over the Snapdragon 835 found in the original quest.

The Oculus Quest 2 will feature "nearly 2K Resolution per eye" which would put the total resolution at just under 4K possibly 3,840 x 2,160. The video did not mention if the display refresh rate would be increased from the 72Hz found on the original Quest but the XR2 platform can support up to 90Hz screens. The ram has been increased to 6 GB from the 4 GB found on the original and max storage has been expanded to 256 GB.

The headset will also feature a redesign to improve comfort and reduce weight while the controllers will receive various ergonomic improvements. The headset will be fully compatible with original Quest games and can be attached to a VR capable computer with an Oculus Link cable to play PC VR experiences. The Oculus Quest 2 is expected to retail for 299 USD and 399 USD for the 64 GB and 256 GB models respectively.

Some videos say that Facebook will be selling it at a loss. $299 for headset with XR2 processor? A steal. They'll make up for the cost by you signing off your soul to Facebook. And them selling off your private data to advertisers.

Too bad it's still using wired connection to PC. Might actually be interested. I used to work in security, so i collected a lot of private data from people over years. Would be so easy for me to create a FB account with someones information. :D

I don't get it, can this be still plugged into a PC or is it just one of those worthless standalone VR headsets ?

I think this is an excellent entry point for people to get into VR. If I didn't have a high end PC I would consider one for myself. I have recommended the Quest to a few friends but always thought the resolution was a bit low, this is a welcome improvement.

HTC just announced its Focus 2 with an XR2 chip... I bet they are sweating bullets after hearing about the Quest 2 being $299. It's not official yet, but if it's true then I bet a lot of VR HMD makers will rethink their price. Also, about wireless one of the Virtual Desktop devs has already said, "Expect Improved PCVR Streaming with Quest 2!".

Also, here is some more pics/leaks

This looks like a good mobile lightweight one. Too bad the mobile graphics still sucks compared to desktop visual fidelity. Hmm, might just buy it for the completely wireless part.

Yeah, I don't think it will replace my Rift S on pc for games like Alyx, but this will be great for Big Screen, Youtube Vr, vr chat, Rec room, Horizons, and beat saber. I think the best part will be wireless to pcvr using Virtual Desktop or an official wireless solution.

EDIT: If this is 90hz and wireless work really well then it may replace my Rift S. I just don't see the comfort being better than Rift S's halo strap after long periods. Hopefully, I'm wrong.

For any long beat saber session I seriously need a fan on the HMD. Sweating is not fun in beat saber.

This has been the best purchase as a VR accessory. It's paid for itself multiple times.. lol It was on sale on Amazon for 5 bucks last Christmas so I bought 2. lol It's a game-changer. No more foggy lens and it has 3 speeds with a lithium battery. It will run 6 hours on low, 4 on medium, and 2 hours on high. Low is good enough.

EDIT: I'd pay 15 to 20 buck if I had too.

It hangs around your neck and blows up to your face. It works surprisingly well. Honestly, anyone looking to get into VR, this fan is a must-have solution.

Let me know if you have a picture of this setup while VR is in session. Strap on neck, wouldn't it be bouncing around when you swing?

When I get time I'll take some pics and send them too you. It's weighted enough that it stays on your chest, but I have seen people put a strap around your midsection to hold it in place. It's worth the extra effort not to deal with sweat and lens fogging. I plan to use it with my Quest 2. I already use it with my Gear VR as well. Let's take this to PM if you have any more questions about it. I'll try to get a post up in AR and VR sections so we can talk about it more. Thanks!
I'm excited about the new star wars game. I need to check and see which games are cross-buy for pc and Quest to see what I don't have to rebuy for Quest 2. The Jurassic World game looks cool too. I can say the visual jump from Vive to Rift S was huge. I expect the jump from Rift S to quest 2 to be as good. Now I'm talking about reading text and looking at stuff far way. Even watching movies is night and day from Vive to Rift S. I couldn't watch a movie in bigscreen with the Vive due to screen door, but using my Rift S it looks great. The Quest 2 should be huge just for media consumption.

It would be a selling point if existing Oculus users / Oculus accounts could be used with this new Oculus VR HMD. That way the grandfathered Oculus Quest accounts would have a year or two without having to use FB on this new Oculus VR HMD.

From what I can see about the new VR HMD I like. However, I don't necessarily want to have to deal with FB and there are other things I'm interested in buying such as a PS5 and an nVidia RTX 3080 or 3070.
Also I already have an Oculus Rift (CV1) and an Oculus Quest. I think I'd be fine with sticking with the current Oculus Quest for another year or so.

Its an interesting pattern though given the MSRP of these VR HMDs from the same manufacturer:

Oculus Rift CV1 - $599
Oculus Rift S - $399
Oculus Quest - $399 (64GB version / $499 for the 128GB version)
Oculus Quest 2 - $299 (64GB version / $399 for the 256GB version)

This is becoming much more affordable. The entry level Oculus Quest 2 is half the price of the original Oculus Rift CV1

Honestly, I merged my FB account (My wife made me) a few months ago for venues, and Its not bad. You can set it for only friends to see you or no one at all. When I say see you I mean by what you are playing. Plus you can set it to show your real name or your gaming name. It's not as bad as most people are saying.

I have a G2 on preorder, but if the screen specs are comparable I may just go with the Q2 at half the price. I do think the Q1 is a bit too bulky and heavy for Link use other than seated games, so I am also quite interested in the ergonomc changes. One thing I haven't seen leaked is if FOV changes at all from Q1 (plus or minus).

I don't know if I would cancel the G2 preorder if you got it for sims. The G2 should be better using PC VR playing sims. If you got it for the higher resolution to play media and be totally wireless then cancel and get Q2. The native quest/2 games should look much better on the Quest 2 over the Quest with the XR2 chip. If we get official wireless support from Oculus with their compression it should be amazing. The other 3rd party (Virtual Desktop) solutions already look great and work for most people.

Also, about wireless one of the Virtual Desktop devs has already said, "Expect Improved PCVR Streaming with Quest 2!".
Well ofc there will be better streaming. Limiting factor was the snapdragon 835 processor. It is capable of decoding video signal at maximum of 150Mbit/s. Bandwidth of link cable is 1.7Gbit/s. So XR2 processor will be able to decode that video signal a lot faster. Thus increasing video quality and probably further reducing latency. For $299, Quest 2 will probably be the best PCVR headset to come out so far.

Err, I thought that's what I was trying to say? I was just pointing out that one of the developers pointed it out. Some people need that validation... haha I'm in an out.. I've had people in my office all morning. lol The XR2 has wifi 6. Thanks for sharing the bandwidth, but even the link cable isn't as good as a standard DisplayPort cable due to it being 25.92 Gbit/s. I hope Oculus announces official wireless due to its much better compression system.

Haha I started this reply 45 minutes ago and have come back multiple times and added a sentence each time.. I hope this sounds right

Even if it is $600 I wont care, all I need is good controls and minimum 2k res per eye as I am already on reverb with 2160x2160 per eye.. I will just create a fake FB account and a prepaid credit card to use Oculus...

Take that Mark Zuckerberg.

A lot of CC companies allow its customers to create temporary card numbers for purchases to minimize security risks. Just an FYI.

Not sure about the prospects of fake FB accounts.

I actually have a FB account but I started it many years ago and didnt see the point of it. So the result is I never really used it. FB might think that account is fake because it's derelict ,..... :)

Exactly, but I don't even think it needs to be a fake account. Just create a blank account with minimal information. Like I said you can still hide that information from everyone else in your settings. I don't notice anything different other than being able to see other people in your friend's list that has an Oculus headset and they have enabled let friends see that they have one. I got to say I'm pretty excited about FB Horizons possibilities. Go watch a movie with friends in a VR Theater or play games.

FB settings example
You can actually turn on individual apps example I only want to show my activity in beat saber to my friends. So, when i'm playing they can join in.

If is they want me to use my phone number, I can get a prepaid one and use it to create a account and toss it in trash ;) There is now way he can force people as I can use prepaid credit card as well.. :D I am not giving him any data for sure.
I wouldn't go to that length. They are not worried about "you" per se.. It's your activity while using the Oculus HMD. Things like oh he likes to build computers let's send him computer advertisements. It's not even tied back to your personal info. It's just that we have a "user" that likes this product. Let's send him advertisements on that product.
