Western Digital announced a media event dated October 8, 2020, in which it's expected to announce the next generation of WD_Black line of gaming-grade storage products. Over the years, the WD_Black brand evolved from representing the company's fastest client-segment hard drives to gaming-grade client-segment products, including the company's fastest internal NVMe SSDs, external SSDs for game consoles, and fast external HDDs. Western Digital is expected to unveil its next-generation WD_Black NVMe SSD succeeding the SN750, which could possibly leverage PCI-Express Gen 4. We know this from the three motifs in the teaser image, which denote a desktop PC, notebook, and a console. The media event will be livestreamed on Twitch.

Your wish is granted by WD genie.

You will get a 1tb pcie 4.0 PLC SSD with 10TBW and will overheat for workload more than 10 seconds.

I do wonder, what do you use it for that you need 3GB/s read/write such that any lower would not suffice ?

WD's take on PCIe 4.0 NVMe would be nice, considering how well they did with their in-house controllers for PCIe 3.0. They've been surpassed a while back, but that also means they've had plenty of time to work on their new stuff. Here's hoping they've put more work into sustained loads and random IOPS than peak "look how high my benchmark score goes" numbers.

I've been very pleased with the SN750, so I'm excited to see what WD can do with the new generation. I understand that marketing dictates "gaming" to be a hot sector for sales, but I hope they don't cheapen the brand too much, as their drives have been very well suited for more "professional" style work.

Looking for their new Black drive. Samsung threw all it's MLC advantage under the bus with 980 PRO and low TBW which is pathetic vs all the TLC drives from Sabrent, Corsair, ADATA which are better ones, SKHynix started too, soon they will also have a better drives. Hope this one is good, it's all TLC nowdays, the Memory cartel decided it, no one can get the MLC anymore. 860 PRO is the last great MLC drive, much less heatup than NVMe, 970 PRO has less storage so not much worth.

980 Pro should be called 980 Evo, what a massive step down from the 970 Pro. No more Samesung for me.
