Leaked AMD Ryzen 5000 Mobile Lineup Shows Significant Performance Boosts

AMD has attempted to fix their mobile processor naming situation with the launch of Ryzen 5000 desktop processors, by skipping Ryzen 4000 on desktop AMD has brought their mobile and desktop processor generations under the one naming scheme. However, it seems this naming scheme simplification hasn't gone as well as expected with leaked specifications for the upcoming Ryzen 5000 mobile series showing a mix of Zen 2 and Zen 3 processors. The leaked processors include the AMD Ryzen 3 5300U (Zen 2), Ryzen 3 5400U (Zen 3), Ryzen 5 5500U (Zen 2), Ryzen 5 5600U (Zen 3), Ryzen 7 5700U (Zen 2), and the Ryzen 7 5800U (Zen 3).

These new processors will maintain the core counts of their Ryzen 4000 predecessors while gaining a modest bump to base and boost speeds. These clock speed improvements will be accompanied by the claimed 19% IPC uplift on the Zen 3 based processors. The processors will also benefit from increased Vega iGPU cores and iGPU clock speed boosts. This combination should offer significantly improved performance over previous generation Ryzen 4000 mobile processors which already offered strong performance against Intel's offerings. AMD is expected to officially announce these processors at an event in January with prices slightly above previous generations.

I don't think it's bad practice. Zen2 cores are perfectly capable to fill in the performance gaps and the line-up here makes sense. I'm just not sure how much 5700U will hold water compared to 5600U. I surmise they will be terribly close in performance in most tasks, and 5600U will be better in many lower thread apps.

I surmise they will be terribly close in performance in most tasks, and 5600U will be better in many lower thread apps.
Reading this again, if Zen3 13% perf increase in multithread and more in single-thread is what we are really going to get this lineup is considerably more misleading than what Intel is doing (at least Ice Lake and Comet Lake have different names). 5400U should step on heels of 5500U and 5600U will step on heels of 5700U even in MT, very likely blowing them out of water in single-thread. Looking at Zen3 prices on desktop, Cezanne pricing should be interesting. If Cezanne is noticeably pricier - and that is quite likely - customers will flock to the cheaper Renoir models.

I think they know better than you and I about their own products' performance, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. If performance numbers align with prices, who cares what specific core is in there? We're not talking about any significant architectural or instructional differences...

The point is that Zen3 does have architectural improvements over Zen2. 8-core CCX in place of two 4-core CCXs, 50% more cache, everything on the "19% IPC uplift" slide in the Ryzen 5000 slide deck. About how significant they are... AMD slide says 19% iso-clock, leaked R20 scores say ~13% for Ryzen 5000 CPUs over similar Ryzen 3000 models.

They are not architectural changes, but rather optimizations.

AMD already broke down what it believes accounts for the IPC uplift, and there's plenty from the front end (µop cache, branch prediction and probably some decode changes, literally labelled "front end") and back (execution engine, load/store units). They just didn't go into detail because they're trying incredibly hard to appear to gamers. You don't get any kind of double digit IPC improvement by changing cache alone, compare the difference between Sunny Cove and Willow Cove.

I hate this new trend of text posts on twitter taken as "rumors". If you rely on your claims in text form alone, you better be a damn reputable long-time leaker. Otherwise, put the actual slides up there (those slides don't show jack) - no one knows who tf you are.

Having superior performance is great for AMD, but I hope they've also been working on working with a broader range of manufacturers to get their CPUs in a wider range of laptops, 2 in 1's, tablets, etcetera. I'm not just talking about low end or mid-range products, I want to see more higher end mobile products featuring AMD hardware and having high quality specs and features. If I want a high end AMD 2 in 1, for example, I want to be able to shop for more than 3 options, if at all possible. I wish that were an exaggeration, but I don't think it is. I think AMD has been on a roll for a while, and I think they improve each quarter and each year, so I'm optimistic that things will continue to improve, company-wide.

Uhm, AMD was quite explicit at the Ryzen 5000 launch that Zen 3 is not an optimization of Zen 2, but a whole new architecture.

These are most definitely architectural changes. Some of the low-level components might carry over (though most if not all of those are likely to be tweaked to some degree), but the overall architecture of the chip is entirely new.



Back on topic, this is very disappointing to me. This naming is plainly designed to obfuscate there being two separate lineups, hiding the fact that even-numbered parts will significantly outperform their odd-numbered parts, potentially even outperforming seemingly higher tier parts. Really hoping this turns out to be wrong.

Now, we just need the entry level line of the rtx 3000 series to come out. I hope they do a full rebranding of the 1650 and 1660ti in laptops. Get rid of the 1650 and make like a 3050 with the performance of a 1660ti. We would finally have an entry level card that would be recommended across the board for 1080p mobile gaming.

Now, we just need the entry level line of the rtx 3000 series to come out. I hope they do a full rebranding of the 1650 and 1660ti in laptops. Get rid of the 1650 and make like a 3050 with the performance of a 1660ti. We would finally have an entry level card that would be recommended across the board for 1080p mobile gaming.

What? If the chips are Zen 2, they are Zen 2, and have zero Zen 3 architecture in them, as they would by then no longer be Zen 2. That would need to be some sort of "Zen 2+" or some such, which would be an utter waste of money to develop given that they already have the faster and more efficient Zen 3 done. Also, "Zen2 is better than originally thought"? We have had Zen 2 chips on the market for a year now. It's a well known and widely documented architecture, both on desktop and mobile. We know how good it is.

early Zen 2 chips were basically unoverclockable, Zen 2 chips today can do much higher IF clock and clock speeds, which means better memory, which means better cpu and igp performance... I'm guessing binned for better efficiency so higher clocks on average and for longer. Perhaps Zen 3 architecture isn't as impressive at lower clocks? Less efficient for now?

Stay away from the Lucienne, stick to Cezanne. Hiow can Lucienne improve much on Renoir other than slight clock bumps. Then confusingly they'll release Van Goigh with Zen2 and RDNA2.:kookoo:
