Microsoft Releases Windows 10 October 2020 Update

Microsoft late Tuesday released the Windows 10 October 2020 Update, the year's second major update to the operating system. This update focuses on improving the user interface, without too many under-the-hood changes. It sees closer integration of the Edge web-browser with Windows, where Alt+Tab lets you cycle not only among open windows but also among web-browser tabs. Edge also introduces Collections, a feature akin to Firefox Pocket, which lets you easily organize and save content you find on the web.

Updates to the Start menu and Taskbar see app icons do away with the square "modern UI" background in the apps list. The Display Settings now include refresh-rate setting. Windows comes with closer integration of 2-in-1 device context switching (between tablet to laptop modes). Commercial users get simpler mobile device management, improved Windows Hello biometric sign-in, and Windows Defender Application Guard (WDAG), which uses hardware isolation to protect supported apps such as Edge and Office, by leveraging hardware virtualization. Microsoft started releasing the Windows 10 October 2020 Update (free for existing Windows 10 users), through Windows Update.

I just installed it on one of my test laptops that had 2004 so far so good.

Waiting a month or so before trying on my main desktop which is still on 1909.

This. Never had an issue other than Windows not being able to do audio properly, which it still can't.

Its just the thing to do and has been for so long at this point, true or not for this update, someone's bound to do it. For those who don't want to wait for Windows Update: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

I see the odd issues here and there with various Windows updates, but not as frequently thankfully. I've honestly seen more issues with some Windows Server updates. This update for Win 10, so far so good on one device, time to test the rest. :toast:

I just updated using the link above, and only thing I see different is in Programs and Features there are 4 installations with tomorrow's date.

Don’t know, but on my main system until 1909 these huge feature updates would completely bork the system. I always ended up saying screw it and do a fresh install, so got to do each upgrade twice, lol. Now, it all works fine, although an in place upgrade does force me to reinstall some additional programs. It just depends on the mood I am in now whether I just install from scratch or upgrade.

In any case I have it on a 180 day delay in group policy as standard practice.

That's weird. That's about the time I would expect it to take with a spinning disk, at worst... For reference, every time I do a build upgrade it takes about half an hour from the moment I restart the machine to start the upgrade until I'm able to work again, with a SATA Mushkin Triactor 3DL SSD...

EDIT: That took like... 10 seconds... It DL's the W10 2H20 update (several seconds), rebooted and viola! If this is a bi-annual major update, it felt like a minor Defender definition update it went so fast.......

Well, I went for it. Took all of the time it took to reboot my system.
It sucks having an old screen...
I don't get the odd decimal points though...
Also, Asus claims this is a 10-bit display https://www.asus.com/Monitors/ROG-SWIFT-PG27AQ/specifications/

Supposedly 8-bit + FRC should show up as 10-bit in Windows.
I have never seen this display show up as anything but plain old 8-bit anywhere. Maybe Asus lied? The same seems to apply to a lot of their so called 10-bit displays.

Then Acer did too? I have a Predator (27" 1440 144/165Hz IPS). It will do 10-bit but only if the refresh rate is 98Hz or lower I guess... maybe that is the issue? That dropdown is greyed out for me currently.

But it can still be set to 10-bit. I don't have this option anywhere.

I can in fact not even touch the colour depth box. Dropping to 30Hz unlocks it, but still only 8-bit and same for 24Hz...
