AMD in Talks with Partners About Custom Radeon RX 6900 XT Designs

Just a few days ago AMD has announced its Radeon RX 6000 series of graphics cards based on the new RDNA 2 architecture. While AMD has given out the "Big Navi" chips to its partners to design custom boards and give users designs with better cooling and possibly higher overclocking capabilities, that doesn't seem to extend to the highest-end parts. So far, we have seen custom designs from companies like ASUS, MSI, etc., and all of them have one thing in common - they only do designs for Radeon RX 6800 or RX 6800 XT. So one would wonder where are the highest-end custom Radeon RX 6900 XT designs.

The first wave of the "custom" cards will be on November 18th, when manufacturers will release designs that are MBA (Made-by-AMD), meaning that the PCB is a reference design, just with a custom cooler installed. When it comes to the custom RX 6900 XT cards, AMD is now in talks with its partners whether to keep the biggest "Big Navi" design available for custom designs, or to keep it as AMD exclusive, with the most likely scenario being the AMD exclusivity. AMD partners could carry the models in their stores and offerings, however, the PCB and cooler design would be AMD's. The situation is yet unresolved so we have to wait and see what comes out of it and if we are getting any custom designs of the Radeon RX 6900 XT model.

"AMD is now in talks with its partners whatever to keep the biggest "Big Navi" design available"

Take it that meant to say "whether"

On the actual article:
I would love some extreme custom cooling solutions, like imagine a card coming with its own tripple rad? I mean its a niche product anyway, go nuts!

Not having advanced 6900 XT designs will just shorten the already short gap between it and the 6800 XT.
To make sense out of this thing, 6900 XT AIB designs should exist - just like RTX 3090's do

Many are drooling for a Sapphire Toxic edition watercooled and pushed to 2.5GHz. That would be some BF GPU :)

Either because the 6900XT chips are so limited in quantities or AMD want higher profit margin...Radeon VII ring any bell ?

With the 6800XT having 16gb of vram and nearly identical specs, I don't believe the 6900 is worth it given the quite big price difference between the two.

a custom PCB wouldn't be bad but if the ref. RX 6900 XT PCB is a as good and over powered as they usually are they the ref. AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT should be a good.

I am counting on buying it on release date I hope it's avaliable and doesn't cost a lot more then 1000USD in the country I am in.

So one would wonder where are the highest-end custom Radeon RX 6900 XT designs.

Where indeed. I'm still waiting for the Felix the Cat limited Edition.

The profit margins of Radeon VII were low, not high, because 7nm 16gb hbm2 + interposer is expensive.
Hence why it was so quickly EOL'd, it was basically Radeon Emergency Edition.

I hope they allow for more than just an OC on the core.
Ideally allowing the AIBs to use faster GDDR6 memory on the premium models might make a significant difference.

I'm pretty sure the partners can put any memory they see fit (above some minimal performance threshold, of course) as long as it is GDDR6. If they make a toxic, they will most probably put the fastest GDDR6 available. But they need to be sure there's enough market for such an AMD card before making such an effort.

The reason why I said that, is because currently not only all 5700XT have 14Gbps memory, but AMD put a rather low OC limit in the bios of every card.

They should let AIBs loose on these dies, allowing an AMD card to sit at the very top, above custom 3090s, on TPU' very own Performance Summary charts. I say this as there are strong rumours RDNA2 clocks really well, whereas 3090s are very poor in this regard (2-5% increase in performance). The only problem is of course, power draw would go up, and reach Ampere's space heater levels.

Given it's going to be a niche/halo product, why not just drag the best out of the AIB manufacturers?
  • ASUS has the 3 slot Matrix Cooler, as well as the old ARES brand.
  • Gigabyte has their Waterforce AIO, Waterforce WB, and AORUS Extreme WB.
  • PowerColor has its Liquid Devil, and they used to do ultra-halo cards under the Devil 13 brand.
  • Sapphire has both the Phase Vapor cooler (w/ extra RGB) used on Limited Edition Nitro+ Vega Cards and the old TOXIC AIO/Hybrid cooler designs.
  • MSI has their Sea Hawk AIO and Sea Hawk WB, and could rework their EVOKE concept for a better-cooled but clean looking GPU cooler.
  • ASROCK has the AQUA brand from their motherboard; why not expand further into the design theme with an AQUA WB for a 6900XT?
  • XFX has meme branding, and could definitely do something with a 6900 XT, whether it's a Double D, THICC, Big Boy, Bad Girl, etc.
  • Yeston does wild/weird variants, so why not another Waifu edition, but with actual cooling to go along with the pink bling?
And if it OC's extra well, why not see if they could bait GALAX or iColorful into doing a KoF or Kudan variant respectively?

NVIDIA at least allows their halo XX90 product to have AIB variants, so why not rival them there as well? AMD just has to insist that performance and cooling will be better than reference at minimum to get access to 6900 XT chips.

They both are.

6900XT is the 80cu version.
6800XT is the 72(?)cu version.
All three are, actually, it's the same 500 sq mm + die, with more or less parts disabled.

RX 6900 XT was rumored (“6900 XTX”) to be a limited edition before its announcement, which probably will be true at least for the next months. Full chip with the highest OC potential produced in limited quantities as a halo product. Maybe it’s production will increase slightly over time but it might never reach mass production. Not a big deal for me, I’m interested in the so called midrange cards anyway.
