AMD RX 6800 & RX 6800 XT Partner Cards Won't Hit MSRP Until Early 2021

The launch of the AMD RX 6800 and RX 6800 XT was plagued with a lack of availability and inflated prices. Retailers sold out of reference models almost immediately leading to price gouging and the launch of custom boards a week later did little to ease the situation. AMD has acknowledged the situation and is working with AIBs to achieve MSRP prices. In an unofficial comment to Hardware Unboxed, an AMD representative confirmed that they hoped to reach MSRP prices within 4 to 8 weeks for custom cards. The cards are currently selling for 100+ USD higher than their suggested retail prices at retailers across the globe so this news from AMD will be welcome for many.

"Lack of availability" is a real funny way of saying, "Inability to keep up with demand". With people buying in to the lock down fraud and having nothing better to do combined with AMD chips powering PS5 and Xbox 4 in addition to the RX 6000 series of course demand is going to be high. Oh, by the way: holidays. Oh, by the way: Nvidia selling most of their GPUs to miners.

The Radeon marketing team just needs a thorough house cleaning at this point. It's like every major launch there's some absurd own goal.

Well the AIB reference 6800 is selling for the same price as the cheapest 3080 in my country o_O.

I think these 6800/6800XT only exist for PR purposes for now, selling at MSRP would force manufactures to lose money, and nobody like to lose money (even AMD don't want to produce reference model themselves).

What country do you live in? You know AMD is an American company so naturally they're going to sell most cards initially in America right?

To say that it's a PR stunt id wildly immature, think before you speak/type. You will not die if you don't get a hold of these or any other video card.

Last time I checked Nvidia is also an American company, no ?
Think before you type ?
And stop attacking people when it involves your favorite company please.

It looks like AMD's slice of 7nm enhanced node is overloaded. PS5, Xbox Series S and X SoCs, Ryzen 5000 chiplet / mobile APU SoCs, Instinct MI100s, and Radeon 6000 - all on the same node. Radeon 6000 series could be their lowest priority because of its low margin / mm^2 compared to the others.

Afaik only the consoles use the 7nm enhanced node the Ryzen 5000 and RDNA2 gpus use the older 7nm process that Ryzen 3000/RDNA1 used

I'm not 100% sure but they could be N7P as well. AMD simply calls this "7nm" in roadmaps to avoid confusing it with "7nm+", which contains EUV layers.

Nvidia has been doing this since the mining bandwagon.
Almost 3 generations, the the GTX 1xxx series, the RTX 2xxx series and with 3xxx series.
Not only 100+ USB but sometimes with almost DOUBLE THE MSRP
And AMD just imitated. Not that I am saying we should not disgrace AMD. but we also should disgrace the head of the snake too.

I've been wondering on that for a while. When will RTG stop shooting AMD in the foot?
It's like they are two different companies.

AMDs 6800 launch were terrible, way worse than Nvidias 3000 launch.

AMD 6000 series = Zero stock / low to medium demand
Nvidia 3000 series = Low stock / high demand

AMD wont sell many of these GPU's, even if they hit the claimed MSRP prices - when stores actually gets these cards in high quantity, amd will lower prices for sure

Look at Steam HW survey - most popular amd gpu's are 580 and 570 - still only 1-2% are using them
People are simply not buying AMD unless perf/price is much higher than Nvidia and most won't even consider AMD in the $500+ segment

AMDs "high-end" options have been bad for years. Radeon VII EoL after a few months, Fury X aged like milk etc.

Did you just say that $600+ GPUs have lower margin than APUs in consoles that sell for $399/$499???

No 7nm wafers left for Navi21, at least AMD has a real demand issue with their silicon. I never expected them to prioritize PC hardware over the launch of consoles so here we are.

I have literally never seen an Nvidia card at MSRP since 1000 series included and I really mean never. I live in Europe so the price is higher anyway since it's in euros but even with that it's always at least 200 euros over what it's "supposed" to be. AMD cards are usually over MSRP as well but never by such an extent.

For instance where I live the cheapest 6800XT was about 800 euros meanwhile the cheapest 3080 is still just over 1000. Both non existent by way.

Yeah right.

Remember the mantra guys, it's a demand issue not a supply issue. People wanted to buy more than zero cards and Nvidia was really taken by surprise.

Big retailer, barely any cards or customer orders

Compare these numbers to their Ampere section, and you will see what I mean, 95% will take Nvidia over AMD any day of the week

AMD "high-end" GPU's (as in high priced or $500+) generally do not sell well. This is nothing new.

You mean like this : https://www.tomshardware.com/news/proshop-rtx-3070-numbers-update ?
Attempting to stock up on cards from Asus, MSI, Gigabyte and Inno3D, Proshop has so far ordered 4,280 RTX 3070 units from manufacturers. Of those units, only 106 have actually made it into Proshop’s hands so far. Another 185 are confirmed to be on the way, but that still leaves 3,989 cards unaccounted for.

Keep trying random Nvidia PR forum dweller. Hilarious.

Good job finding a 1½ month old article - if you take a look at their updated numbers, you will see that they have delivered alot more cards now, how many has AMD delivered tho?

Anyway, delivering was not the point, orders was, it shows that Nvidia 3000 series has TONS of pre-orders and AMD 6000 has pretty much none in comparison, most people are simply not paying 600-900 euro for an amd card

As a former 5700XT owner, I know why

You mean to tell me that some products released 3 months ago that have never really been in stock have more pre-orders compared to some that have been released a couple of weeks ago ?

Shame they already gave out that Noble prize recently.

Hardly any, but at least there's a real reason for that, lack of wafers. Meanwhile Nvidia basically has a node all to themselves and are able to ship roughly the same volume, which is almost none.

But that's probably my imagination, it's a demand issue remember, they must have sold dozens of millions, right ?

Roughly the same volume? Haha! Not even close.

AMD delivered JACK SHIT on launch and retailers are saying most will be waiting deep into 2021

Meanwhile I have had my 3080 for 7 weeks now, Cyberpunk 2077 closing in, AMD bois will be waiting in the dark

Do you really think that AMD delivered as many chips as Nvidia? Like seriously? Did you skip all the news in the last few weeks

Nvidia launch was bad, but AMD launch has been a disaster, absolutely zero stock

6800 series are like a halo product

Just like 6900 XT will be, hell even most reviewers won't be seeing one anytime soon

What country do you live in? You know AMD is an American company so naturally they're going to sell most cards initially in America right?

To say that it's a PR stunt id wildly immature, think before you speak/type. You will not die if you don't get a hold of these or any other video card.
Unfortunately the comment "I think these 6800/6800XT only exist for PR purposes for now, selling at MSRP would force manufactures to lose money, and nobody like to lose money (even AMD don't want to produce reference model themselves)." seems 100% correct right now.
