NVIDIA could take a similar approach to sub-segmenting the upcoming GeForce RTX 3060, as it did for the "Pascal" based GTX 1060, according to a report by Igor's Lab. Mr Wallossek predicts a mid-January launch for the RTX 3060 series, possibly on the sidelines of the virtual CES. NVIDIA could develop two variants of the RTX 3060, one with 6 GB of memory, and the other with 12 GB. Both the RTX 3060 6 GB and RTX 3060 12 GB probably feature a 192-bit wide memory interface. This would make the RTX 3060 series the spiritual successors to the GTX 1060 3 GB and GTX 1060 6 GB, although it remains to be seen if the segmentation is limited to the memory size, and doesn't also go into the chip's core-configuration. It's likely that the RTX 3060 series goes up against AMD's Radeon RX 6700 series, with the RX 6700 XT being rumored to feature 12 GB of memory across a 192-bit wide memory interface.

Either get an insufficient amount of VRAM or pay the extra tax. Nice.

Allocation /= utilization. The GPU itself will become an obstacle before VRAM capacity. This has all been spurned by AMD attempting to produce more value with GDDR6 instead of GDDR6X in premium options

Keep believing. Its almost like religion at this point.

Nvidia has similar faith which is why every tier gets a double vram alternative. Oh wait.

And if you tell me its always like that, kindly point me to the 16 GB Pascal midrange, the 22GB 2080ti and 1080ti etc...

Oh. Wait.

But allocation maybe has reasons? If has not reasons why games allocated more VRAM than utilised?
Because why not? Instead of pulling the data from the drive when you get a call saying that you need to render X, already have the data on memory so that the GPU can get to work on it instantly.

Correct so if you arent storing you are fetching. Which adds latency to frames and can produce stutter. But this is not something history has proven at all. Totally new. :)

To be fair, I don't think even Nvidia in their infinite greed could sell a mid range GPU with more VRAM than an 800$ card that's twice as fast. But then again, they do push the boundaries for what's acceptable and what isn't with every release so who knows.

Nvidia is also marketing their gaming gpu really hard for content creation, maybe that's why they went with "double the vram on everything"

Let's just say, you won't be doing any RTX on this little guy except maybe for screenshots, the 3060Ti barely hits 60fps with it on in some titles and that is with the help of DLSS. 6GB VRAM is a sad joke, the RTX3060 series cards should all have had 8GB of VRAM, for the 3050Ti / 3050, 6GB would have made more sense. As for the 3070's+ they all needed to start at 12GB VRAM+.

All I am seeing from this launch is: Ludicrous prices for the performance gained and there is just no stock availability, to call this launch a failure is an understatement.

The 3060 Ti just launched and it has 8GB. I find it hard to believe a 3060 is coming with 12GB.

Funny, what about 3070, 3060ti and 3080 12/16gb versions?

Isn't 6GB enough for 1080p? Many still play on 1060 3GB LMAO, though they have to live with reducing texture levels by now.

Why 6 GB? I don't get it.
Why 12GB? The MSRP will be too close to the 8GB ti version and the the chip will most likely be too slow to take advantage of that amount of video ram.

Be that as it may, I think we are already getting too close to that amount of VRAM in use/allocated at 1080p. I'm not saying that a 3060 should have 12 GB, because that seems too much, but 8 GB would have been enough for now and for whatever may come the next two years. Mostly because we're transitioning to a new console generation, so I think devs will be more inclined to be a little more resource-demanding in general when thinking about what kind of quality they want as baseline.
Why 12GB? The MSRP will be too close to the 8GB ti version and the the chip will most likely be too slow to take advantage of that amount of video ram.
My thoughts were that 12 were too much and 6 is cutting it too close. 8 GB would have been better, I think.

6GB VRAM in 2021 is a sad joke, yet it will probably still be the most sold Ngreedia's GPU simply because of $299 price tag. 6gigs is an excuse to charge $349 or even more for 12 gigs 3060 imho. Navi 22 (6700(XT)) can spoil Nvidia's greedy plans, but will it? Navi 21 was not exactly price disruptor (with honorable exception of 6900XT) we wanted to see. Let's hope AMD's mainstream lineup does s better job, but I'm not holding my breath.

At 1080p a 3060Ti does fine in raytracing at native 1080p in most titles. Even a 2060 is fine if you use DLSS at 1080p. I guess you're refering to Cyberpunk but that's the most demanding game out there even without raytracing.
