NVIDIA's upcoming GeForce RTX 3080 Ti graphics card is likely to feature a hardware hash-rate limiter, much like the recently launched RTX 3060, according to kopite7kimi, a reliable source for NVIDIA rumors. The hash-rate limiter ensures that that crypto-currency mining performance of the card is significantly lower than what its hardware is capable of, so it doesn't remain viable for miners. The limiter works through a secure key exchange between the video BIOS, system firmware, and the driver; so driver-level modifications wouldn't affect it.

The RTX 3080 Ti is being launched to fill the large price-performance gorge between the RTX 3080 and RTX 3090. Its rumored specifications wildly swing between a 12 GB memory setup maxing out the 384-bit memory interface of the "GA102" silicon; and 20 GB of it across a narrower 320-bit wide interface. The card allegedly features 80 out of 84 streaming multiprocessors (40 out of 42 TPCs) enabled, working out to 10,240 CUDA cores, 80 RT cores, and 320 Tensor cores. Below is a picture of the RTX 3090 Founders Edition.

I wonder how crippled? Even 50% is going to be 50-ish Mh/s, and a price/performance isnt going to make sense, but miners will still buy it I'd bet

Hashrate limiter is just a gimmick from Nvidia.

AMD now has stated that they have no plans for a hashrate limiter so it is just a matter of time before Nvidia anonymously "leaks" a work around to keep miners buying the cards. This way they will look like the good guy and still make all that juicy money from the miners.

End of the day Nvidia is only interested in their bottom line, do not fall for the PR crap "We care about gamers" they are trying to feed the world. They never did before and will not in the future. Nvidia will trample down anybody to make an extra buck even gamers.

Honestly it doesn't matter if miners buys or not. people here in my country buys rtx3060 at 600€ at launch and try sell it for 1000€. All cards sold just in 15min. Instead temporary i bought a rx550 at 69€ and with some OC i can play with low settings. I think i lost my interest on pc building anyway. So who cares.

Exactly, all or nothing, otherwise the nerf doesn't help one bit. The new SKU's also needs to expand the nerfs to more than the algorithms that ETH uses. Miners said they will still buy all the 3060 non-ti's, claiming, it's still profitable, they have and they did. So did this help? NO.

Why not Block it instead of limiting 50%? Or why not 90%?

because you need the miners to have the ability to create a simple work around as opposed to 90% (basically stating 100% can't do it) which would actually impact sales

If NVIDIA leaks the code intentionally whose gonna buy their CMP line?
Not saying leaks won't happen, just saying if it did happen it would not be in NVIDIA's interest.

They are only crippling ethash mining performance. Other altcoins are mined properly andwith great profitability with the same limiter applied on 3060. So, another marketing BS from nVidia.

D: D: D: GPU that nobody can buy is crypto-crippled again?
Whats next? NVIDIA is crippling teleportation device to max 100kg payload? NVIDIA is crippling over-the-speed-of-light transport to 2c?

Crypto currency needs to die so this mining shit can stop. I want my new video card.

TechPowerUp also marketing Crypto mining with all the adds allover just says one thing, that it is not going anywhere soon...

I also wanted to upgrade this year, but with this prices and poor developments in games I am losing interest quickly and will just play games that I have not finished (backlog) yet and upgrade every 5 or so years or only when really necessary. Think about do you really need another GPU or would you LIKE a new GPU, after giving it some thought I actually decided screw this and started saving / investing my money rather. Sooner then later this will bite Nvidia / AMD in the bud. Most game developers cater for the lowest denominator GPU to increase sales and this will hold back the gaming industry and development.

Good luck for future of Nvidia / AMD soon people will turn to something else and GPU sales will crash.

Any kind of limitations is equivalent to shooting themselves in the foot if AMD doesn't implement something similar. I know a lot of people oppose mining and think anyone who mines or even sells a GPU on ebay marked up is the enemy... but there are some who may want to use their $1500 GPU for part time mining, or whatever they feel like and don't want crippled cards.

I personally played around with mining years back (built a who 6 card rig), but then the market crashed and I realized it's no different than the stock market, but with no rules, and those with money control the market. But I still won't buy a purposely crippled card that infringes on my ability to do whatever I want with my GPU.

Crypto will never die. It started as a curiosity, but as the world sees fit to clamp down on financial transaction from the *wrong* people (see also operation chokepoint) and deny financial transactions to *problematic* people and businesses, crypto has become very important to a small but rather wealthy corner of both the internet and business at large. A currency not tied to FIAT governments or big banks is of grat interest to many, and now that big corporations and world governments are investing in crypto, it will never go away.

Why not Block it instead of limiting 50%? Or why not 90%?
Because any limit you put in place to prevent crypto from running, orlimit has performance, someone will find a workaround for. It's a big business, simple firmware checks or driver locks wont stop them.
because you need the miners to have the ability to create a simple work around as opposed to 90% (basically stating 100% can't do it) which would actually impact sales
If miners had a work around for stopping a block, theyll also have a work around to get over the 50% or 90% or whatever rate.

Nothing this generation will be available at MSRP, if at all. Pandemic still has production down, shipping constrained, and demand elevated. Until thats over expect this situation to continue.

If it's like the 3060's 'crippled' mining performance, then it won't make any difference because the 3060 is mining everything except ETH, and even that can still be mined profitably - just less profitably than all the other crypto.
