The 11th Gen Intel Core S-series desktop processors (code-named "Rocket Lake-S") launched worldwide today, led by the flagship Intel Core i9-11900K. Reaching speeds of up to 5.3 GHz with Intel Thermal Velocity Boost, the Intel Core i9-11900K delivers even more performance to gamers and PC enthusiasts.

Engineered on the new Cypress Cove architecture, 11th Gen Intel Core S-series desktop processors are designed to transform hardware and software efficiency and increase raw gaming performance. The new architecture brings up to 19% gen-over-gen instructions per cycle (IPC) improvement for the highest frequency cores and adds Intel UHD graphics featuring the Intel Xe graphics architecture for rich media and intelligent graphics capabilities. That matters because games and most applications continue to depend on high-frequency cores to drive high frame rates and low latency. Designed to Game: With its new 11th Gen desktop processors, Intel continues to push desktop gaming performance to the limits and deliver the most amazing immersive experiences for players everywhere.

Read the TechPowerUp Reviews of the Core i9-11900K and Core i5-11600K.

At the top of the stack is the 11th Gen Intel Core i9-11900K, featuring unmatched performance with up to 5.3 gigahertz, eight cores, 16 threads and 16 megabytes of Intel Smart Cache. The unlocked 11th Gen Intel Core desktop processor supports fast memory speeds with DDR4-3200 to help enable smooth gameplay and seamless multitasking on this platform.

Improvements in this generation include:
  • Up to 19% gen-over-gen IPC performance improvement.
  • Up to 50% better integrated graphics performance with Intel UHD graphics featuring Intel Xe graphics architecture.
  • Intel Deep Learning Boost and Vector Neural Network Instructions support to accelerate artificial intelligence (AI) inference—vastly improving performance for deep learning workloads.
  • Enhanced overclocking tools and features for flexible overclocking and tuning performance and experience.
Through close collaboration with more than 200 of the top game developers, Intel brings a host of game, engine, middleware and rendering optimizations to applications so they can take advantage of 11th Gen Intel Core S-series processors to deliver exciting gaming experiences.

Superior Tuning and Stability: 11th Gen Intel Core desktop processors introduce new overclocking tools and features for more flexible tuning to achieve unmatched speeds and superior game performance. This generation includes real-time memory overclocking which enables changes to DDR4 frequency in real time, extending memory overclocking support for H570 and B560 chipsets allowing users to experience overclocking, Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX) 2 and AVX-512 voltage guard band override, and an all new integrated memory controller with wider timings and Gear 2 support (in addition to Gear 1 support).

Media and Streaming Features for Days: The new 11th Gen Intel Core S-series delivers rich media experiences, from AAA gaming to high-definition streaming with additional features including DDR4-3200 MHz support, 20 PCIe 4.0 lanes, Intel Quick Sync Video, enhanced media (10bit AV1/12bit high-efficiency video coding decode and end-to-end compression), enhanced display (Integrated HDMI 2.0, HBR3), and discrete Thunderbolt 4± and Intel Wi-Fi 6E support.

The Intel Core i9 11900K is the top model of the Rocket Lake generation. Because the 11900K no longer has ten, but eight cores, it immediately loses its IPC profit in multithreaded tests. On average, the 11900K is only 10 percent faster than its predecessor. The game performance is at most a small step forward, not big enough to keep up with the AMD Ryzen 5000 processors. In the meantime, energy use is getting out of hand; under full load, this processor consumes almost 300W.

The Intel Core i7 11700K has just as many cores as the top model 11900K, but due to the lower clock frequencies, the power consumption is less extreme. Compared to the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, the consumption remains very high, especially when you consider that the processor is also faster. However, the Core i7 11700K is a bit cheaper than the competitor.

The Intel Core i5 11600K is a bit cheaper than the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X, but also a bit slower. AMD's competitor is also faster in games. Compared to the i5 10600K, the power consumption has increased significantly, making the processor less efficient and requiring good cooling.

well if i was in the market, i would skip this, more so being more of a gamer seems like the better deal is with last gen and 9th. And that power usage OMG.

I'm in the market since summer for high-end system because of these high prices, but intel doesnt look attractive on high end. Only attractive from 10-45W while AMD delivers 35W, but they are impossible to get alone. Only in junky prebuilts...

Why AMD won't start low W cpus for market with integrated gpu 10w, 15w, 20w...?

Jess Intel, get your act together. Rocket lake is all ready pretty much DOA from lauch.

What good are there to say about rocket lake? Hmm, maybe AVX 512. Else I really can't think about anything new intels old cpu and amd zen 3 all ready offer or do better.

11900k pricing is absurd, you can get a 5900X for that price or just around that price... When 5900X comes in stock that is.

Going down on cores and rising prices at the same time, is definitely a step back. 11900k compared to 5800X is not impressive. It loses in games, power consumption/efficiency, pricing, even most benchmark.

All in all, rocket lake is DOA (dead on arrival) from day one, if you ask me or as gemer nexus said in there early review:it's a waste of sand.

Rocket Lake exists solely to reclaim that lost gaming performance crown, the only thing they have going for them atm, and to bring PCIe 4 to users who feel left out and stuck on PCIe 3.

The most insane part is the overclocked single core power consumption, it's just boggling.

Being the best gaming CPU in this terrible GPU market is about as much consolation as it is being the smartest of the dumb kids.

Yeah unmatched power usage. Imagine if the 5600X could be run at 240W instead of 150W. Rocket Lake is a disgraceful product to launch when we are supposed to tackling climate. Why they wasted resources that could have been spent on Alder Lake and Tiger Lake for desktop.

Just a question.
Is this release worst, or way worst than Intel's Pentium 4 one?
I mean I can absolutely found no advantage buying those over the competition, even over their previous generation.

11700F is selling for the same price as 5600X in my country, so yeah Intel is now fighting for the value proprosition.
Being produced on 14nm will allow Intel to flood the market with these processors, energy efficiency doesn't really matter for gaming anyways.
