Need an affordable GPU that will do 144hz or at least 75hz refresh rate

I just got a new monitor that will do 144hz refresh rate but my geforce GTX 660 ti will only do 60hz.

I'm hoping there is an affordable option out there in the used GPU market less than 100 bucks to do at least 75hz. There must be a zillion old GPU's out there, but most of the won't run 75hz let alone 144hz

I think I'd be happy with 75hz but if I can do 144hz that would be dope.

I didn't realize how pricey these new gpus are now yikes!

A 660 Ti can refresh at 144Hz. What you've done is connect it to the monitor using the HDMI port which is limited to 60Hz, rather than the DisplayPort connector, which will do 144Hz.

What make and model is your new monitor?

oh HELL Yea! great news! I'm looking for a display port cable now! Thanks QUBIT. my new monitor has both hdmi and DP and so does the GPU. Easy fix!

The refresh rate is more of a function of the monitor and the connection it uses, rather than a video card limitation. Back during the old days, you were limited by something called "RAMDAC", which was a bandwidth measurement, but even then, 24 years ago, ancient cards like the Voodoo2 could run at 85hz refresh rate, and some CRT's could run at something like 160hz at 1024x768.

That was superceded by DVI, replacing the analog VGA (Dsub) connector while retaining some backwards compatibility (e.g. adapters) due to certain established standards. The original HDMI connectors were limited to "DVI Single Link" bandwidth, which topped out at 1920x1080@75hz (175 mhz pixel clock). Dual link DVI allowed 1920x1080@144hz and 330 mhz pixel clock. Then we got Displayport and HDMI 1.4 and 2.0 connections, with HDMI 1.4 allowing 1920x1080@120hz finally, and Displayport 1.2 going up to 600 mhz pixel clock, and the new "Display ID" standard allowing pixel clocks higher than 600 mhz (this is needed for 4k @ 120hz).

So yes make sure you know what connector your video card has, what standard of a port version it has, and the capabilities of your monitor and its connectors, as your monitor is going to be the limiting factor.

usually having gsynced 60-90 will be much smoother, produces less heat/noise,
and easier to reach.

for whatever reason siege wont go past 75 on the new screen (120hz),
but the fact its steady @75, improved gameplay much more.

Or, you know, some people just prefer to enjoy their games when it's smoother. High frame/refresh isn't just for competitive people.

I've also seen someone play Siege at 160, like, in front of me.

i think based on max refresh from screen, so 120, as im running a 120Hz screen..

How can you check which standard DP your GPU is using?
From what I can gather, through the GPU manufacturer's specs. Also, the OP should consider buying a quality branded DP cable because the quality does indeed vary as I know to my cost.

because usually, flight or racing sims dont improve much running at 144?
even when looking at "smoothness", 144 wont make a big difference there (vs 120), as its between 60 and 120.
so ppl spending more, to get a 144 over a 120 screen, are mainly playing FPS and the like.
(which i will assume until i know different.)

Just FYI, DirectX 9-based Halo: Custom Edition, has a 120 Hz hard-coded max limit in the options. (At the least, it simply will not let me select higher than that on a 144 Hz monitor)
