Hi! I hope someone could point me in the right direction for playing 4k hevc in VLC player. Playing 4k HEVC video my cpu (i5 3330) has high usage, 50-80%, while gpu (r9 380x) is doing nothing, sitting at about 5%. My question is, is there a way to make Vlc use gpu for video decoding instead of cpu? I tried some settings in Codecs tab, and restarted Vlc to see if it works, but still it decodes on cpu. I did a clean windows install yesterday and installed latest amd software drivers (disabled windows update drivers for gpu as well). Thanks for reading this wall of text :)

I'm surprised you can run HEVC at all with that CPU. Based on my searching everything states you need atleast a Skylake CPU for HEVC playback but based on what i can find the R9 380 doesn't support H.265 decoding. I only see H.264 4K

This, GCN 1 doesn't have hevc. You need to have a Polaris/Vega or later gpu for hevc.

This is correct, Tonga based 300 series GPU's did not support HEVC encoding/decoding, Polaris and upwards do.

I think Skylake and up support HEVC hardware decoding on the GPU, but older CPUs will just use software decoding. Hence the 80% CPU usage. A decent deaktop quad-core should be able to handle 4K HEVC software decoding.

@DogeiSpace you have already tried this program I am not sure if it meets what you are looking for but it does not cost to try (I use it because I believe it is superior to the VLC) https://potplayer.daum.net/
