Valve's Gabe Newell Hints at Possible Plan for Consoles

Valve's head, Gabe Newell, has on Monday talked to the students at Auckland, New Zealand's Sancta Maria College. While Mr. Newell spoke to students, one of them has asked Mr. Newell about the company's plans for consoles and has recorded the response. The student then proceeded to upload the recording to Reddit, but, it was later deleted. However, we are in luck as Ars Technica reported on this and we have managed to get a bit of new information about what's coming from Valve and what we can expect. During the talk, a student asked Mr. Newell: "Will Steam be porting any games on consoles, or will it just stay on PC?"

To that, Mr. Newell responded by saying: "You will get a better idea of that by the end of this year... and it won't be the answer you expect. You'll say, 'Ah-ha! Now I get what he was talking about.'" This is a rather vague answer to a question and it doesn't give us much information, other than the fact that we can expect something towards the end of 2021. This could mean anything, so we are not sure yet. However, we will keep an eye on it and make sure to report every new information as it appears.

Would be nice if he just got on with releasing HL3. Valve have done other games since, so why not this one, which everyone is gagging for? It will sell in vast numbers and people will even build gaming PCs just to play it.

In my opinion, HL2 is the best story-driven game I've ever played, even today, 17 years later and Unreal Tournament & UT2004 the best arena shooters.

There is so much hype and expectation that even if they released one of the top games of the year it would disappoint people, and as they work in a flat hierarchy organisation that seems very much work on stuff that makes you happy I'm not sure many people would want to pour their heart and souls into something that would be criticized no matter what.

I do wish they'd release more games even if they didn't do HL3.

I hope he doesn't make Half Life 2 Ep 3 or Half Life 3 only on whatever console he may be hinting at. I'm not going to buy a console just for that game.

Many bought into VR just to play HL:A

Just saying. I know you never will. You are strong PC gamer and will not give money to ANY consoles.

It's not just the cost of the console for one game. I know when I played shooters with my son on his SNES and N64 that I sucked using a controller.

I don't think it would receive a barrage of criticism. It will sell by the bucket load though - so much so that they might run out of stock at Steam. ;)

I can't update my system because of the prices and lack of availability of modern gaming graphics cards.
So using your logic this would be a bad time to release something that would motivate upgrading.

I think you miss the point that I think he should just get on with releasing HL3. The fact that there's a problem with buying graphics cards at the moment isn't relevant to the overall picture.

Not sure what prompted it but just yesterday I was thinking about the Steam Box and whatever happened to it... Feels like forever ago but really it wasn't that long ago but man that thing went from max hype to 0 in record time.

I’ve actually come across a couple of forum posts where people outright stated that they bought a Valve Index just for HL:A and when they finished with the game just sold the kit. Leveraging a game like HL:A behind hardware requirements such as a VR HMD or possibly even a new console (quasi PS5 or XBox series X) wouldn’t necessarily deter the determined.

In my case I already had an original Oculus Rift and had moved on to the Oculus Quest (v1) when HL:A was released. So there was no need to buy anything save for the game itself.

Gabe, get the god damn memo already, Valve is and was always good for one thing: Half Life. It even carried Steam to dominance. Count your blessings and start making that fucking sequel already. Everything else - nobody cares! Steam Machine spoke volumes...

Maybe this needs to become a universal oneliner. "I dont feel well" "Irrelevant - Gabe just needs to release HL3."

You need to play Half-Life: Alyx! It's by far the best game I've ever played. It's like being in an epic movie. There is word that the next HL game will be HL:X. I bet the X stands for Xen.. lol I can't wait. Pick up a Quest 2 or which ever (I don't want to debate the FB login) and you won't regret it.
There is so much hype and expectation that even if they released one of the top games of the year it would disappoint people, and as they work in a flat hierarchy organisation that seems very much work on stuff that makes you happy I'm not sure many people would want to pour their heart and souls into something that would be criticized no matter what.

But they have already release a new HL game and it's amazing. I really and I mean really don't want to give anything away for HL:A but you need to play it. I can say this that HL:A will have new people buying and playing it just as much as HL2 had when it came out.

I think you miss the point that I think he should just get on with releasing HL3. The fact that there's a problem with buying graphics cards at the moment isn't relevant to the overall picture.
Then team behind HL:A is a for making new games for HL and they are coming. I think we would have already seen it if it wasn't for Covid.

My take is that is either some sort of Valve games on GamePass or actual Remasters of their games. From what i see, there is something going on for a while between Phil Spencer and Lord Gaben.

With recent presentation from Linus Torvalds I expect something big come of this. I think he spent the whole 10 or 15 minutes talking about "Gabe Newell being the only one who can bring user-friendly desktop linux to masses", and that "he has something significant in the works". Apparently they've been socializing quite frequently in recent years.
That's probably it - the great comeback of Steam Machines. Pretty sure this time there will be no OEMs and no uncertain specs, which is an excellent thing. And with crazy strides in DXVK/Proton layer, I'd say we are 100% ready for Steam console and proper Linux gaming.

I'm not selling my Rift S. I rarely use it now but swinging that lightsaber in Beat Saber or Vader: Immortal just have a different feeling to it. That first time seeing Vader that close is so intimmidating. Also I had people try it and they are always amazed by it especially Half-Life:Alyx.

That Jeff stage was so exhausting. You can clearly see that they toned the stage down or else it might cause heart attacks.

I'm not really one of those pcmasterrace elitist but consoles are not worth it for what it can do. This was justified during the pandemic when everything shutdown. Back then you can get a "decent" rig for the price of the console or a phone. I've seen poeple complaining about using chromebooks for work from home set-up when they blew their money on high-end phones and consoles.

I'd ike to, but it's got that VR requirement though, so I'd have to spend a lot on the headset. Did you play it with that unofficial keyboard and mouse mod, perhaps?

Then team behind HL:A is a for making new games for HL and they are coming. I think we would have already seen it if it wasn't for Covid.
I sure hope they do this. It's so way overdue it's unreal.

I can't update my system because of the prices and lack of availability of modern gaming graphics cards.
So using your logic this would be a bad time to release something that would motivate upgrading.

Thats a bit selfish aint it?

I cant update my system, Therefore YOU arent allowed to release any new games for me to play.

Why dont we all stop and drop whatever we are doing and do our best to stop the world from spinning while you sit on the throne and take a dump?

Maybe from scalpers,....

A PS5 at MSRP costs about ~$499. You'll be lucky to get a decent video card for ~$500 these days. If your total budget is around ~$500 and you're starting with nothing, what kind of gaming PC can you buy,....?

It's just a cheaper option and if you're into VR the PS4 and PS5 have the PSVR as an option,....

By back then I mean early 2021 before all this scalping happened. I got my 2070S March 2021 and the price was decent. You can get a decent PC back then for a price of a high end phone. The main difference is you cant flex it in public. So much for that now.
