AMD Breaks 30% CPU Market Share in Steam Hardware Survey

I remember when 290/X (Assuming you flashed your bios a la XX50->XX70) was the top AMD card for 4~ years straight later getting "replaced" by 390/480/580 while Vega was a flop and then you had 5700/XT that came out much much later. Perhaps we'll see something similar come RDNA 3.

But until that happens this will be the Bulldozer era all over again.

If they didn't ship me a DOA 5800X i would have been on AMD after 15 years of Intel, but now i went with a 11700 instead which works flawless out of the box and runs 25C cooler.
You sure it was DOA? They test the shit out of them before they leave the factory do they not?

My 5900X idles down to 25c.. could be a cooling issue maybe?

Ampere has been present on Steam HW Survey for months and months (since last year, all models are now present - except 3080 Ti obviously)
That's freaking crazy, considering pople have to pay 3x their MSRP to get them, it shows people ARE willing to pay ludicrous money to get what they want, am afraid companies will look at this and jack up prices higher :(

They're already doing that, in my part of the world if companies raise prices ~ citing any number of BS reasons, you're not going to see those prices come down almost ever!

The only reason why Nvidia priced Ampere anywhere close to sane levels because they got whiff of the competition! If RDNA2 was even 10~15% slower you can bet 3090 would be closer to $2k :shadedshu:

JHH is one of a kind in this regard, more hype > more sales > more prices >more profits!

Regarding AMD vs Nvidia in GPU share, just look at RTX 2060 vs RX 5700 (close counterpart) percentage. RTX 2060 (5%) alone dwarves RX 5700 XT (1.03%) + non-XT (0.97%) + 5600 XT (0.36%) combined. Is just AMD significantly lost the mindshare game against Nvidia, even in the midrange where AMD used to contend better on.

And like I've said previously time and time again AMD's flip-flopping on naimng convention isn't helping anybody, least of them AMD. It's kinda the opposite of the CPU side of things. There's a premordial constant hype and media coverage around Ryzen processors while for GPUs it's Nvidia said this, people can't buy RTX GPU that and so on.
Nvidia even found a valid tactic of keeping themselves on media limelight with their RTX/DLSS support announcement every few weeks, which I think replaced their AAA Game Ready Driver update they used few years ago.

They are a CPU maker and they should prioritize their core CPU competitiveness. GPU was with ATi, as long as the console’s or custom chips are doing fine i doubt AMD really cares about PC gaming market. This is good.

Take a look at nvidias stock price. Thats what being able to sell high margin premium products looks like, and AMD is slowly pulling themselves in that direction with their positioning vs intel and recent pricing. The AMD of today would not make the same deal with Sony and MS that 2009 AMD had to make when competing for PS4/XB1 contracts.

This is good news, but yeah, no Radeon 6000 series at all is very weird ... Especially because Ampere is better for mining. Ampere has been present on Steam HW Survey for months and months (since last year, all models are now present - except 3080 Ti obviously)

Can TSMC deliver at all? Or what is wrong .. I guess Nvidia went with Samsung for this exact reason. TSMC is simply too busy fulfilling orders from alot of different brands, Apple always get priority and this won't change and maybe they are also prioritizing console APUs over desktop chips, who knows

AMD missed a golden oppotunity tho - It looks like Nvidia shipped 100:1 Ampere vs RDNA2

The results are surprising to you, because you are looking at data, which is dominated by prebuilts and laptops. I mean, in the Steam Survey AMD Radeon HD 8800 Series increased 0.07% this month and that series of GPUs was released almost 10 years ago exclusively to OEMs! This also explains why AMD CPU market share isn't bigger, although they are selling like hotcakes - they were always poorly represented in both of those segments.

DIY market is a different story. Example for GPUs:
https://www.reddit.com/r/AMD_Stock/comments/ninhal
Just wait for JPR GPU quarterly report for true shipping market share ...

Benchmark Scores 3050 scores good 15-20% lower than average, despite ASUS's claims that it has uber cooling.
until that happens this will be
6900XT, with slower VRAM, lower power consumption, lower transistor count beats 3090 in the newest game.
And then this comment.

Mind blowing.

Alot of GPUs to apple, why? Apple does not sell that many PCs with AMD graphics

Consoles are nowhere to be seen either - why would AMD prioritize consoles, it's low margin chips, gpu market is a gold mine right now. AMD should do WHATEVER they can to deliver desktop GPUs
They most likely have contractual agreements with MS and Sony to supply a certain amount of chips per quarter. Out of everything they are shipping right now desktop gpu's are probably at the bottom of the list.

It did work when it didn't WHEA Crash after an hour or so, it got to a good 70-75C during gaming, while my 11700 only reaches 50-55C.

Anyways, the motherboard was an Asus Rog Strix B550-E Gaming (piece of shit as well), tried various BIOS versions at the time, but it kept WHEAing. Also bought different memory as the HyperX Fury kit threw memtest errors all over the place, so i bought a G.Skill 3200 MHz kit instead. But even at non-XMP settings the system would WHEA crash.

The WHEA crashes said "cache hierarchy error" all the time. People told me that's simply a bad CPU, so i send everything back to the store and they refunded everything.

This was back in January this year. So i thought everything over until last week, do i want to try AMD again? Or go with what i'm familiar with? So i ended up getting a 11700 to upgrade my 4770K and i havn't regretted it.

During my thought process i also figured out i don't need the best of the best anymore to play games.

First of all market share changes extremely slowly because there is a massive portion of older products being used, AMD CPUs have been consistently better in almost any convincible metric for about 4 years and look low long it took to make a significant dent in the market.

Secondly these numbers are skewed by the fact that these cards do not reach their intended consumer base. In fact since 2013-2014 I don't think there was a single generation of AMD cards that haven't been eaten up to various degrees by miners.

It did work when it didn't WHEA Crash after an hour or so, it got to a good 70-75C during gaming, while my 11700 only reaches 50-55C.

So it was defective, not DOA. Well, who knows really, WHEA crashes could be anything.

One word. Prebuilts. They contribute to much larger market share than the DIY market. And it was (still is) a segment where AMD is almost non-existant. At least with GPUs.

On Topic, good on AMD, a duopoly sounds much better than a monopoly.

I've bought and "fixed" 7 DOA Ryzen chips for cheap so far with none being dead in any way from a site selling Amazon's returns, DOA GPU have been 100% dead X3 times out of 3.

I had similar experience with the first 5800x i got. It worked for about 1 - 2 hours (that is not DOA but close) then it crashed and never worked again. Temperature were really high (near 100° C in load with a corsair H150i Pro, did repaste 2 time just in case).

I ordered a replacement and the next one worked just flawlessly with temperature that are normal. No bios change have been made between testing the 2, i did before on my X570 board. But the new 5800x is now about 70-75° in a all core AVX load for hours. So the first one was just a bad one.

There was an article early that i was really suspicious about claiming that Zen 3 had higher defect rate. Guess they might had issue at some point. This CPU was purchased in Jan so that might have changed.

I am very surprised that there is still no 6*00 GPU in the steam survey because among people i know in RL they are the only GPU they were able to put their hands on in Canada at a "reasonable" price. Same for me, i got a 6800 in december.

5800x in particular runs hot for me but 5900x and 5600x are great cpus. It's to be expected that AMD is coming up with how intel is doing, they have flat out better cpus right now and they listen to the community. I'm surprised it's not higher tb but given the times upgrading your computer might not be a good idea for people with all the part shortages and scalping.

I like that small nudge Intel made when new Ryzens were unavailable and Rocket Lake appeared, but then the trend went back on tracks. :)

I'm surprised it was so small. The 10700 (non k) were/are going for about $370 CND which is pretty good value for the $ whereas the 5800x was not available, and when it is it's $570 CND.

Either way I'm waiting, ram has went up $50US for 32GB, vid cards are unavailable, etc. etc. If I have to wait another year, or even 2, fine by me, I should get better value for my money then hopefully, if not, run the system until it dies then replace.

Guess you fell out of the wrong side of the bed this morning.
Think what you will I'm not here moaning about tangential topics, or is there some relevance I missed between the issue you passed back to a shop and AMD's installed base on Steam, because unlike you I can't see a link.

Alot of GPUs to apple, why? Apple does not sell that many PCs with AMD graphics

Macbook Pro 16" uses Navi graphics. Mac Pro uses user replaceable Polaris and Vega cards currently. iMac Pro until this year had Vega. iMac 27" uses Navi.

They sell a lot of AMD chips in their current lineup.
