Dell Cannot Ship Select Alienware Aurora R10/R12 Systems to Several US States Due To New Power Regulations

Dell has stopped selling its Alienware Aurora R10/R12 systems to customers in six US states as they cannot meet the requirements of California's Energy Consumption Tier 2 implementation. These new energy efficiency regulations which became active on July 1st in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington limit the maximum kilowatt-hour usage of select devices. The maximum power usage allowed by this regulation for new desktop systems is calculated with a base limit and incorporates various additional allowances for discrete GPUs, high-speed memory, and certain storage mediums. Dell has confirmed that select versions of their Alienware Aurora R10/R12 systems cannot meet these requirements and as a result the effected models have been removed from sale for customers in these states.

just a sad side note ---- high refresh rate monitors are part of the same law, but that does not go into effect until December of this year.

;)

I suggest changing the headline to something that doesnt imply that all alienware systems cannot be shipped, and merely some of them.

Was just replying to the other thread on this when I found out it had been closed as I hit post, surely it would have been better to merge them rather than just nuke the other 3 page long one? :kookoo: @the54thvoid

This is going to end up for the entire industry what happened with Intel CPU's for the last 10 years. No performance improvements, but talk about efficiency! Before long, I can see where the new technology coming out is significantly less powerful than the previous generation, but will be sold to us as the "next great thing" because it saves so much energy. If this practice by California keeps up, it will do to computers what CAFE has done to automobiles.

I wonder what makes those systems unable to comply. After all, they're made of parts that already have to pass numerous regulations/certifications.

Seems a pointless thing to slap a power limit on something that can be ugraded. It's not like a kettle or vacuum cleaner.

Bonkers. And as folk have rightly said - consumer electrics are small fries compared to industry.

This is comming to be a total joke now they are limited power on devices and yet allowing electric cars on the road that use alot more. I went to the CA site to read up the law and wow saw this on there site. "California also led the nation in utility-scale electricity generation from biomass in 2019. Biomass fueled about 3% of the state's net generation that year.53 Nearly three-fifths of the state's utility-scale biomass generating capacity is at 30 power plants fueled by wood and wood waste" They are cutting tree's down all over the planet to fuel these biomass plants. Thus we are going backwards again. The ozone layers are disappearing and the heat waves are increasing. Honestly Coal burning plants was more efficient. It takes almost 8 biomass plants to produce the same energy of one Coal burning plant. I looked it up it takes 1 whole ton of wood per hour to make 1 megawatt of electricly on average. Coal for example 1 ton of coal produces 8.1 Megawatts of power. Yes the biomass plants produce less CO2 but with the ammount of wood they are burning they are removing more Trees that convert CO2 to Air we breathe.

This big push for green energy has a dark secret. As I always say the Brighter the Picture the darker the negative.

Also got a PDF from CA their biosmass plants is burning roughly 28 million tons of wood per year. thats just one state. No wonder our climate is changing so fast. We are cutting down all the things that remove CO2 in the air.

Build your own system then - what's the problem?
They'll soon come out with the PC Police, who will come around and inspect peoples PC's in California

It's going to be great when all their cars are electric, and they have brown outs and ask people to cut down on use because the US power grid is an ancient mess. Won't be able to use electricity, won't be able to use water... I feel like they are rushing into this without thinking things through...

Just read the source article. Has a quote from the Semiconductor industry.

a 2015 Semiconductor Industry Association report [PDF] that, given a benchmark system of 10-14 Joules/per bit transition, "computing will not be sustainable by 2040, when the energy required for computing will exceed the estimated world’s energy production."

Screenshot of SIA graph from report
Graph from SIA report on the IT revolution ... Click to enlarge
Current processors operate at about 10-17 J/bit, which the SIA considers to be a workable target for more efficient computing, though the group said in a more recent report, "Revolutionary changes to computing will be required soon."

I did not realise this. Sort of changes the perspective.
