BOE Creates 27-Inch Full HD Display With 500 Hz Refresh Rate

If you thought that your 144 Hz monitor sounds rather fancy, you would have to think again after seeing this. Beijing Oriental Electronics Group Co., Ltd or BOE shortly, has announced that the company has managed to design and manufacture a 27-inch full HD display with a refresh rate of 500 Hz. No, this is not a typo, and the company made a display with such a high refresh rate. This technology marvel features an 8-lane eDP connection paired with a 1 ms response time and an actual 8-bit color gamut. While this refresh rate may not suit every AAA game title, players of CS: GO, and DOTA 2 are likely targets. Along with this 500 Hz monitor, BOE also announced a 110-inch 8K 120 Hz panel. It wasn't even long ago when I joked that I would suck in online shooters even with a 1kHz screen as my online buddies are always saying to me to get a 144Hz screen. We're not that far away from those.

We all knew 1080p 480Hz was coming this year. Especially after 1440p moved to 360Hz and 4K moved to 240Hz. Basicly all 3 resolutions shift up by 120Hz every time this happens. Since 480Hz 1080p panels were not mentioned during CES i figured they would come out later.

Next time this happens we will have:
1080p 600Hz+
1440p 480Hz+
4K 360Hz+

Perhaps 2 years from now.

Nothing to swap over, unfortunately. OLED has completely different control electronics.

There's still room for some growth at lower resolutions with HDMI 2.1 (480hz at 1440pand 960 hz at 1080p), but the cost is still so high they've hacked their way into building this monitor using 2x DP 1.4 connections!

There will be quite a few people claiming that they can see significant difference between 120Hz and 500Hz. I'm not saying that it's the same crowd that buy $200+ gold HDMI cables because they get richer sound and warmer colours, but I wouldn't mind seeing a venn diagram.

Of course they do, that's smart engineering. But the part that controls panel refresh isn't one of them. Maybe you could reuse the part that accepts 500 refreshes per second, but relaying that to the panel will be different still.

DisplayPort 2.0 releases this year. And we already have HDMI 2.1 so bandwidth is a total nonissue.
Refreshrate increase is not limited by bandwith but by display technology itself. It takes time to develop new panels.

2.0 cards will release this year. From Intel first. Then likely Nvidia and AMD new series at the end of the year (atleast partially, not the whole stack).

Nobody's being dismissive. But this is early adopter stuff, not many will care about it at this point.
And then there's diminishing returns.
Also, it's Chinese. Until someone reviews this properly, we can't tell how many corners were cut.

Considering that the human eye can not determine single frames above 80hz and can not perceive a framerate above 220hz, a 500hz framerate is a waste. Give us a quality 240hz display and call it a day.

The only good thing higher refresh rate monitors higher than 240hz give is less eye strain because of the blur effect but besides that we still need proof of any benefit.

What helped me to contain that eye strain is to block the constant blue light, I had to buy a special glasses that block almost all blue light and so far has been my saver, It really works great.
